The development of maritime unmanned tools for search and rescue operations is not a trivial task. A great part of maritime unmanned systems developed did not target such application, being more focused on environmental monitoring, surveillance or defence. In opposition to these applications, search and rescue operations need to take into account relevant issues such as the presence of people or other vessels on the water. Building upon user requirements and overall integrated components for assisted rescue and unmanned search operations (ICARUS) system architecture, this chapter addresses the development of unmanned maritime systems. It starts with an overview of the approach where a two-tier solution was adopted to address safety issues and then proceeds to detail each of the developed technologies.

In February 2016 the RAF's Search and Rescue Force (SARF) celebrated its 75th anniversary. In June that year the world-renowned and universally admired service was officially disbanded, despite attempts from many, including HRH Prince William, to save it as part of the RAF. This book is an official, fully illustrated, in-depth account of the SARF's rich and glorious history, from its origins in World War II through to its recent withdrawal. The book contains a foreword by HRH Prince William himself, plus action-packed and awe-inspiring photographs from the RAF's archive of photographs and exclusive interviews with former crewmembers, telling their own dramatic stories of derring-do. Officially endorsed by the RAF, An Illustrated History of the RAF Search and Rescue Force is the first, and probably the only, major book of its kind written on this subject. It is an essential purchase for anyone with an interest in military history, British history, the Royal Family and those who love stories of extreme and daring rescue missions.

A search and rescue (SAR) leeway and drift experiment was conducted in Newfoundland waters during summer and fall 1992, the second phase of a multi-year project to derive leeway rates and angles for a variety of common SAR objects. The summer part of the experiment was conducted in Notre Dame Bay while the fall part was conducted on the Grand Banks, both to collect leeway data in wind speeds ranging from 20-50 km knots. The SAR objects of interest were a Dunlop-Beaufort 4-person life raft, a Tulmar 4-person life raft, and a 5.6 plank boat, common to Atlantic Canada. Each type of life raft was tested in various configurations, including drogued, undrogued, one simulated person on board, and four simulated persons on board. The plank was tested with three simulated persons on board. This report provides the results of the experiments.

When meaningful stories are told and passed down through time, elements and components of those stories often get lost. The stories evolve and pieces get misplaced, parts get left out and the truth can go missing. What once was central can become secondary while secondary elements end up central. Add to that an evil force that is deliberatelyworking against the story, tainting it, distorting it and you risk losing the true message altogether. This is the backdrop of Search and Rescue. We desperately need to recover criticalcomponents of a much Larger Story, a LargerGospel. One that has been lost, misplaced and even stolen. Search and Rescue is an invitation to look for and find that which has been lost in the lives of believers. It’s also a lifeline for countless others trying to survive, hoping that help is on the way.
