Erik Satie's famous Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes make a great addition to any guitarist's repertoire. These transcriptions are suitable for beginner to intermediate level guitarists.French composer Erik Satie (1866 - 1925) was an influential figure in the Parisian avant-garde scene of his time. His work is recognized as one of the forerunners of significant musical developments of the 20th Century. The three gymnopdies transcribed here, for example, are a precursor of ambient music where the focus is on the overall atmosphere rather than the more traditional means of development and variation. Melody and harmony, however, are still absolutely essential: the mild dissonances inherent in them produce the characteristic melancholic mood that these three short pieces are famous for.The 3 gnossiennes transcribed here were composed about a decade later and are a continuation of Satie's style. While the gymnopdies are in three-four meter, the gnossiennes have no time signature. This is known as free time and it indicates that the rhythm is to flow freely rather than be measured strictly. Although there are a small number of other gnossiennes by Satie, only these three form part of his original set.

The composition consists of three little "movements," each taking about two to three minutes to play. The music The parts of the composition are:1. (Desiccated embryo) of a Holothurian (30 June 1913), dedicated to Suzanne Roux:2. (Desiccated embryo) of an Edriophthalma (1 July 1913), dedicated to Edouard Dreyfus:3. (Desiccated embryo) of a Podophthalma (4 July 1913), dedicated to Jane Mortier: item Podophthalmia are stalk-eyed crustaceans, like crabs and lobsters (and various types of mostly larger shrimp), now grouped as Decapoda (i.e. ten-legged crustaceans). item In the score, Satie mentions the "hunter"-like qualities of podophthalmia, so the music is conceived as a miniature hunt . Note that hunts have quite a tradition in classical music, from early baroque keyboard music, over Vivaldi, several classical era composers and romantic opera composers to C sar Franck . Nonetheless, in music a hunting sea animal can be considered a one-of-a-kind. item Satie also points out that podophthalmia are delicious nourriture: he was particularly fond of this kind of sea-food himself. item Satie concludes his triptych with a coda marked, "Obligatory cadenza (by the composer.)" Consisting, as it does, of more than half a page of fortissimo F-major chords and arpeggios, this grandiose flourish is hil...

A composer who dabbled in the Dada movement, a Bohemian “gymnopédiste” of fin-de-siècle Montmartre, and a legendary dresser known as “The Velvet Gentleman,” Erik Satie cut a unique figure among early twentieth-century European composers. Yet his legacy has largely languished in the shadows of Stravinsky, Debussy, and Ravel. Mary E. Davis now brings Satie to life in this fascinating new biography. Satie redefined the composer’s art, devising new methods of artistic expression that melded ordinary and rarified elements of words, visual art, and music. Davis argues that Satie’s modernist aesthetic was grounded in the contradictions of his life—such as enrolling in the conservative Schola Cantorum after working as a cabaret performer—and is reflected in his irreverent essays, drawn art, and music. Erik Satie explores how the composer was embraced by avant-garde artists and fashionable Parisian elite, and how his experiences inspired him to create the musical style of Neoclassicism. Satie also employed the power of the image through his infamous fashion statements, Davis contends, and became part of a nascent celebrity culture. A cogent and informative portrait, Erik Satie upends the accepted history of modernist music and restores the composer to his rightful pioneering status.

Edward MacDowell was one of America's first and most important native-born composers. Smaller piano works have enhanced MacDowell's reputation more than any of his other compositions. He was a miniaturist and his small works are naturally imbued with sparkle and a charming romantic atmosphere. This early collection of piano pieces was written while the MacDowells lived in a small cottage outside of Wiesbaden, Germany. Legends, elves and love of nature permeated these character pieces. "An Elfin Round" is a Federation Festivals 2016-2020 selection. A Federation Festivals 2020-2024 selection.

This collection, then contains Mozart's original cadenzas as well as editorial versions by Ms. Kraus for Concertos 1-27.
