Food safety is receiving more attention worldwide with the rising incidence of foodborne disease, concern over new potential hazards, and growth in agricultural trade. Investments to improve food safety in developing countries can reduce the burden of disease and remove the barriers to fresh food product exports, providing another source of income for the rural sector. International disputes over sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures influence the ability of developing countries to compete in export markets. These countries need to evaluate their interest in the SPS agreement under the World Trade Organisation (WTO); participate more fully in international agencies responsible for harmonisation; develop the capacity to assess equivalence for process standards, which are increasingly used for fresh food products; and resist the imposition of inappropriate standards.

Water supply systems around the world are subject to the effects of work-related accidents and environmental health-related illnesses. Some organizations have been deeply affected by fatal incidents. Even routine injuries and illnesses affecting all organizations can result in lost productivity, increased worker's compensation cost, and poor employee morale. Although a number of organizations are interested in preventing on-the-job injuries and illness, none focus on the water industry. The objectives of this project were to: (1) enhance understanding of the type and frequency of injuries that occur in the water industry and identify divisions and job activities that have higher work-related injury and illness rates; (2) identify the most successful strategies utilities have used to improve safety programs and performance; and (3) promote more uniform injury/illness tracking, prioritize injury/illness related safety issues that warrant greater research attention, develop research project scopes, and prioritize them based upon the criticality of the needs. Current performance when compared to other utilities (i.e., electric utilities) suggests that water utility executives and industry associations such as AWWA and AwwaRF should make concerted efforts to improve health and safety performance. The top three health and safety needs in the water industry are training, management commitment, and formal written health and safety programs. The FDA¿s increased attention to food imports from China is an indicator of safety concerns as imported food becomes more common in the U.S. Addressing safety risks associated with these imports is difficult because of the vast array of products from China, China¿s weak enforcement of food safety standards, its heavy use of ag. chem., and environ. pollution. FDA refusals of food shipments from China suggest recurring problems with ¿filth,¿ unsafe additives, labeling, and vet. drug residues in fish and shellfish. Chinese authorities try to control food export safety by certifying exporters and the farms that supply them. However, monitoring such a wide range of products for the different hazards is a difficult challenge for Chinese and U.S. officials. Ill.

The USFA convened the symposium on "Health and Safety Issues of the Female Emergency Responder," in Rosslyn, Virginia, in October 1994. Twenty-seven participants representing a wide range of interest and involvement in fire and emergency response services were brought together to share their expertise and experiences in specific health and safety issues. The participants were charged with the task of narrowing the focus of health and safety concerns and developing strategies to address the issues of women in emergency response services today. They provided a "snap shot" of the situation for women in the response services and identified the critical issues to address in the immediate future. The report that follows is a result of their deliberations and experience.

The "VOLGA" conferences, hosted in odd-numbered years by the Department of Theoretical and Experimental Reactor Physics of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI), are some of the most prestigious technical meetings held in Russia. Traditionally, these conferences present the opportunity for reactor physicists from around the world to gather at MEPhI's holiday camp on the banks of the Volga river (near Tver) to exchange ideas and explore innovative concepts related to nuclear power development. In 1997, NATO became involved in the "VOLGA" meetings for the first time by co-sponsoring "VOLGA97" as an advanced research workshop. This workshop broke with tradition a bit in that the venue was moved from MEPhI's holiday camp to a location nearer Moscow. The workshop program was effectively organized in order to cover a broad range of topics relating to the theme of the meeting. Generally, the papers concerned safety related questions associated with utilizing both weapons-grade and reactor-grade plutonium in the nuclear fuel cycle, including facility requirements, licensing issues, proliferation risks, and a variety of advanced concepts for alternative fuel cycles. The program contained a total of ninety-nine papers presented in five days of sessions.
