Give new life to your jewelry designs by using common jewelry findings in surprising ways. Readers will enjoy this book as it takes a completely new approach to working with jewelry findings by focusing on nontraditional uses for them: bead frames become connectors; toggle clasps become pendants; filigree can be rolled to create tube beads or bails; and so much more. Author Michelle Mach offers a thorough overview of the many different jewelry findings available, essential tools, and other materials, such as beads, wire, and cords and ribbons. Tips for modifying purchased findings with patinas, beads, hammering, painting, and other jewelry making techniques are also provided. Fifty jewelry projects showcase one or more findings used in a new or unusual way. The designs include necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, some of which can be taken apart and reassembled to become different pieces of jewelry. Basic jewelry making techniques, such as stringing, simple wirework, and basic metalwork, are also covered along with a thorough list of resources.

Comprehensive in scope, Rustic visits twenty retreats that span the breadth of North America and over a century of architectural and social history. They include consummate examples of traditional rustic architecture - including the Ames Gate Lodge, H.H. Richardson's sublime pile of boulders in Massachusetts; Camp Topridge, Marjorie Merriweather Post's compound of drop-dead rustic luxury in the Adirondacks; and the Charles Millard Pratt House in southern California, an exquisite Arts and Crafts winter home designed by Greene & Greene - as well as a varied and inspiring selection of contemporary homes that includes Fortune Rock, George Howe's striking modernist home on the coast of Maine; Robert A.M. Stern's nostalgic Spruce Lodge, hidden high in the Colorado Rockies; and Ledge House, Peter Bohlin's singular masterpiece of rustic modernism in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland." --Book Jacket.

In traditional Polynesian societies, tattooing played a key role in the social construction of the person. This study is the first to provide a comparative analysis of tattooing in its original setting, based on a comprehensive survey of the documentary sources, both written and visual. Drawing on modern social theory, psychoanalysis, and contemporary anthropological studies of Polynesia, Alfred Gell demonstrates that tattooing formed part of a complex array of symbolic techniques for controlling sacredness and protecting the self. This framework is used to elucidate the iconographic meaning of tattoo motifs, as well as the rich corpus of mythology surrounding tattooing in certain Polynesian societies, and the complex rituals associated with the tattooing operation. However, not all ancient Polynesian societies placed an equal emphasis on tattooing, and not all exploited the basic metaphors of tattooing in the same way. Dr Gell provides a wide-ranging comparative political analysis of the main Polynesian societies in order to show consistent correlations between forms of political structure and different tattooing institutions. In this way, Wrapping in Images can be read as a general introduction to Polynesian comparative sociology, viewed from the perspective of body symbolism.
