Note to Self chronicles the inspiring journey of an Armenian immigrant’s son and his endeavor to finding answers to his childhood struggles, dreams and life purpose in the midst of religious and ethnic wars coupled with social and economic challenges. Admittedly, this is a challenging endeavor, and yet he set out to find his happiness among the least-searched paths. He has explored and searched for answers in most religions, philosophers, authors and people’s life experiences. He’s taken the most difficult roads and was left in darkness for some time due to constant internal battles and lack of self-compassion until he reached a point of no return, when he finally decided to face and conquer his fears and self-doubts. He’s done that by isolating and distancing himself for some time from home, family, work and friends while trying to reach, unveil and comprehend his deepest memories, emotions, self-reflections and harbored childhood feelings. Eventually, as you will discover throughout this book, all the right questions gradually started to come to the surface at a time when he surrendered himself to God’s will, accepted his true-self with integrity and learned self-love. All these steps have led to his soul’s awakening and have helped him realize the power within. With enough courage and faith to follow his path, he’s been discovering the secrets of the universe, which lied within his subconscious mind and heart, sowed by his ancestors since the beginning of time. Note to Self is an important reminder to every one of us to take a step back and focus on the inner self first before dealing with the outer world. The author, Ara Fernezian, will explore two simple and fundamental self-questions, something maybe each one of us should ask ourselves: How do you love yourself and others? What have you done so far to improve people’s lives?

The history of questions with me is lengthy. Since I have been ordained a Bishop on September 30,1962, over twenty-five years ago, I adopted a specific method in teaching and preaching: to give a chance for the audience to introduce their questions and have them answered before the beginning of the main lecture. This way thousands of questions accumulated before me during the thousands of lectures that I have given, in the weekly spiritual meetings, on Friday evenings; the Bible study meetings on Tuesday (1968-1972); the theological lectures on Wednesday; my meetings with the priests; with the Sunday school teachers and their conferences; the meetings of college societies; general meetings in Alexandria, on Sunday; the lectures that were given in the theological seminary in Alexandria and Cairo; or the spiritual meetings during my visits to churches and dioceses. Even before my monastic life, I used to answer the spiritual questions of the readers of the Sunday school magazine and the questions followed me everywhere, even in the monastery. The questions varied some around biblical verses, some about theology, doctrines, ministry, spiritual life or social relationships and many other subjects... I excluded what was repetitious, personal, or what I answered with one sentence or a joke. I chose what was fit from the questions for publication, so the people would not have to ask the same questions again and to have almost uniform answers to such questions. Pope Shenouda III

In the decadent fourth book of the series, Verlaque and Bonnet find themselves hunting a murderer on a remote island in the glittering Mediterranean Sea The latest book in the Verlaque & Bonnet Mystery series, The Curse of La Fontaine, is available now from Penguin Books! On-again couple Antoine Verlaque and Marine Bonnet are hoping for a relaxing holiday at the Locanda Sordou, but someone has other plans. Hoteliers Maxime and Catherine Le Bon have spent their life savings restoring the hotel, which lies in an archipelago of sun-soaked islands off the coast of Marseille. To celebrate the grand opening, a group of privileged guests joins Verlaque and Bonnet: Marine’s free-spirited best friend; an aging film star, his much-younger wife, and her disgruntled son; a pair of affable American tourists; and a querelous Parisian couple. But the murder of one of the guests casts a shadow over everyone’s vacation, and things go from bad to worse when a violent storm cuts off all communication with the mainland. Will the killer strike again? Like Donna Leon and Andrea Camilleri, M. L. Longworth enchants mystery lovers with a taste for good food and gorgeous landscapes in this installment of her acclaimed mystery series. “A charming read with a well-crafted mystery and characters as rich and full-bodied as a Bordeaux.” —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
