Alfred North Whiteheads process philosophy is one of the most creative and promising approaches developed in the 20th century. Being a scholar who for most of his professional life worked in the fields of logic, mathematics, and physics it was one of Whiteheads major intentions to exemplarily demonstrate the possibility of the creative interplay between metaphysics and other disciplines such as aestethics, ethics, theology and especially the single sciences. One scientific field which he never lost interest in during his whole life was education, a key domain for prospering societies. In this book a selection of 15 papers explores Whiteheads educational ideas which are based on his radical process approach. Following the Introduction which presents Whiteheads criticism of traditional education and the false psychology which it is based on, the book is divided into two major parts. The first part deals with Whiteheads philosophically inspired alternative theoretical framework for learning and education. Special focus is layed on the concept of the learning process which according to Whitehead is essentially cyclic in nature. In the second part it is shown how Whiteheads ideas can profitably be applied to different sub-domains within education: management education, college education and evalutation. The book shows that Whiteheads process approach offers a promising alternative to traditional education.

Time And The Rhythms Of Emancipatory Education

Author : Michel Alhadeff-Jones
ISBN : 9781317541295
Genre : Education

Time and the Rhythms of Emancipatory Education argues that by rethinking the way we relate to time, we can fundamentally rethink the way we conceive education. Beyond the contemporary rhetoric of acceleration, speed, urgency or slowness, this book provides an epistemological, historical and theoretical framework that will serve as a comprehensive resource for critical reflection on the relationship between the experience of time and emancipatory education. Drawing upon time and rhythm studies, complexity theories and educational research, Alhadeff-Jones reflects upon the temporal and rhythmic dimensions of education in order to (re)theorize and address current societal and educational challenges. The book is divided into three parts. The first begins by discussing the specificities inherent to the study of time in educational sciences. The second contextualizes the evolution of temporal constraints that determine the ways education is institutionalized, organized, and experienced. The third and final part questions the meanings of emancipatory education in a context of temporal alienation. This is the first book to provide a broad overview of European and North-American theories that inform both the ideas of time and rhythm in educational sciences, from school instruction, curriculum design and arts education, to vocational training, lifelong learning and educational policies. It will be of key interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of philosophy of education, sociology of education, history of education, psychology, curriculum and learning theory, and adult education.

Teaching Within the Rhythms of the Semester is a unique and far-reaching guide to teaching and learning that is organized around the ebbs and flows of energy that occur within the time frame of a course. It combines a lively and innovative balance of theory and application with practical techniques for creating successful learning experiences at each stage in a semester.Writing in a clear, straightforward, and highly engaging manner, Duffy and Jones discuss ways of teaching and ways of learning. They model practices that instructors at every level may use to get off to a good beginning, maintain motivation in the mid-semester doldrums, and achieve successful closure at the And. Duffy and Jones offer an excellent synthesis of the principles behind effective teaching. Each chapter opens with a vignette that illustrates some of the challenges teachers encounter in the classroom and the ways both they and their students respond to them. These realistic and engaging narratives are followed by a discussion of the educational, cognitive, and affective theories at work, as well as concrete suggestions--more than one hundred throughout the book--for similar classroom situations.

This is the first introduction to rhythm and meter that begins where students are: as speakers of English familiar with the rhythms of the spoken word, nursery rhymes, song and rap. Terminology is straightforward and there are frequent practical exercises. Poetic Rhythm will help readers of English poetry experience and enjoy its power, subtlety and diversity, and will serve as an invaluable tool for those who write or discuss poetry in English.
