In These Times, the national, biweekly magazine of news and opinion, has provided groundbreaking coverage of the labor movement, the environment, feminism, grassroots politics, minority communities, and the media for twenty-five years. Filled with new writing commissioned specially for this anniversary volume, images, and text highlights of the last quarter-century in the magazine, Appeal to Reason: The First 25 Years of In These Times showcases contributors to the magazine like Noam Chomsky, David Brower, and Alice Walker, to name just a few. But it also asks an important question: Where do we go from here? For answers, Appeal to Reason turns to more than twenty leading progressive writers—including Barbara Ehrenreich, Juan Gonzalez, Salim Muwakkil, and Robert W. McChesney—who take a fresh look at the lessons of the past and suggest directions for the future. Exploring issues ranging from globalization and criminal justice to the environment and culture, Appeal to Reason lays a political and intellectual foundation for the debates, discussions, and movements of the next twenty-five years.

Assault And Flattery

File Size : 70.99 MB
Format : PDF, Mobi

New York Times bestselling author and FOX News contributor Katie Pavlich exposes the truth behind the real war on women—the one being waged by Democrats. Assault and Flattery goes beyond the Democratic Party’s rhetoric and exposes its shocking and sustained assault on American women that has lasted for generations. And in some cases, the word “assault” is quite literal. Katie Pavlich thinks the Democrats have run the conversation for too long—and is out to debunk the sacred cows of the so-called Republican War on Women. Conservatives are raving about Assault and Flattery. Mark Levin calls it “a thorough and gutsy book that should help set history straight.” Michelle Malkin calls it “a tour-de-force…bold, beautiful, and brilliant.” Sean Hannity calls Katie “one of the country’s top conservative reporters,” and Monica Crowley says she “blows the lid off the lies the Left tells women.” In Assault and Flattery, Katie Pavlich explains that what the Democratic Party is doing to women, it is doing to us all. By segregating us by gender, they’re harming our future.

Democratic Reason

Individual decision making can often be wrong due to misinformation, impulses, or biases. Collective decision making, on the other hand, can be surprisingly accurate. In Democratic Reason, Hélène Landemore demonstrates that the very factors behind the superiority of collective decision making add up to a strong case for democracy. She shows that the processes and procedures of democratic decision making form a cognitive system that ensures that decisions taken by the many are more likely to be right than decisions taken by the few. Democracy as a form of government is therefore valuable not only because it is legitimate and just, but also because it is smart. Landemore considers how the argument plays out with respect to two main mechanisms of democratic politics: inclusive deliberation and majority rule. In deliberative settings, the truth-tracking properties of deliberation are enhanced more by inclusiveness than by individual competence. Landemore explores this idea in the contexts of representative democracy and the selection of representatives. She also discusses several models for the "wisdom of crowds" channeled by majority rule, examining the trade-offs between inclusiveness and individual competence in voting. When inclusive deliberation and majority rule are combined, they beat less inclusive methods, in which one person or a small group decide. Democratic Reason thus establishes the superiority of democracy as a way of making decisions for the common good.

The Democratic and Republican Parties are virtual opposites of each other in their economic records, going back to the earliest period for which economic data were available, around 1910. More than a dozen studies have been done comparing economic growth, unemployment, average length of unemployment, stock market performance, inflation, federal debt, and other economic indicators, during Democratic and Republican presidencies and congresses, and they all show stunningly better performance when Democrats are in power, than when Republicans are. These studies are all available online, and they are all summarized and discussed in this path-breaking book, which settles, once and for all, the question of whether there's any significant economic difference between the two Parties. Not only is there a difference, but - shockingly - it always runs in favor of Democrats in power. There might be other types of reasons for voting Republican, but all of the economic reasons favor voting for Democrats. Regarding economic performance, the two Parties aren't even close. ------- CONTENTS 4: Democrats Are Better for the Stock Markets 10: Democrats Are Plain Better for the Economy 19: The Grand Old Prejudice Causes Economic Stagnation 40: Democrats Reduce, Republicans Increase, Government Deficits 46: Republicans Actually Win by Punishing the Nation 105: Conservatism Is Based Only on Faith 114: Trickle-Down vs. Percolate-Up Economics 122: Republicans Harm More than Just the Economy 123: Would Romney Be Better than Obama? 125: References/Sources
