Based on classified documents and first-person interviews, a startling history of the American war on Vietnamese civilians Americans have long been taught that events such as the notorious My Lai massacre were isolated incidents in the Vietnam War, carried out by "a few bad apples." But as award-winning journalist and historian Nick Turse demonstrates in this groundbreaking investigation, violence against Vietnamese noncombatants was not at all exceptional during the conflict. Rather, it was pervasive and systematic, the predictable consequence of orders to "kill anything that moves." Drawing on more than a decade of research in secret Pentagon files and extensive interviews with American veterans and Vietnamese survivors, Turse reveals for the first time how official policies resulted in millions of innocent civilians killed and wounded. In shocking detail, he lays out the workings of a military machine that made crimes in almost every major American combat unit all but inevitable. Kill Anything That Moves takes us from archives filled with Washington's long-suppressed war crime investigations to the rural Vietnamese hamlets that bore the brunt of the war; from boot camps where young American soldiers learned to hate all Vietnamese to bloodthirsty campaigns like Operation Speedy Express, in which a general obsessed with body counts led soldiers to commit what one participant called "a My Lai a month." Thousands of Vietnam books later, Kill Anything That Moves, devastating and definitive, finally brings us face-to-face with the truth of a war that haunts Americans to this day.

Living in the world of werewolves, vampires, and dark magic can have a certain effect on a child, especially when that child is Hassen Mason, who seems destined to bring ruin to those he loves. Hassen was abandoned as a child and was immersed in the world of magic by the strange creatures that raised him. His lineage was a mystery, but no mystery buried in the past can stay buried for long-especially when that mystery is strong enough to span centuries. An accident leaves Hassen without memories, and he must find a way to remember who he was and what his life meant to him before his past creeps up and kills him. He encounters evils worse than abandonment-vengeful demons and walking dead. Somehow, Hassen's family was involved in this dark underworld. Now he has to fight his own internal battle: Is he a good guy or one of the villains? Then he meets Carissa-a woman he suspects he knew before he lost his memory. She has had a similarly troubled past, and although the two of them are from different worlds, they find a common bond that even dark spirits cannot break. Will Hassen's good side be strong enough to battle the side that longs to be bad? Will Carissa's love keep him sane, or will the truth about his family finally cast him into the endless abyss of insanity?

Must We Kill The Thing We Love

William Rothman argues that the driving force of Hitchcock's work was his struggle to reconcile the dark vision of his favorite Oscar Wilde quote, "Each man kills the thing he loves," with the quintessentially American philosophy, articulated in Emerson's writings, that gave classical Hollywood movies of the New Deal era their extraordinary combination of popularity and artistic seriousness. A Hitchcock thriller could be a comedy of remarriage or a melodrama of an unknown woman, both Emersonian genres, except for the murderous villain and godlike author, Hitchcock, who pulls the villain's strings—and ours. Because Hitchcock believed that the camera has a murderous aspect, the question "What if anything justifies killing?," which every Hitchcock film engages, was for him a disturbing question about his own art. Tracing the trajectory of Hitchcock's career, Rothman discerns a progression in the films' meditations on murder and artistic creation. This progression culminates in Marnie (1964), Hitchcock's most controversial film, in which Hitchcock overcame his ambivalence and fully embraced the Emersonian worldview he had always also resisted. Reading key Emerson passages with the degree of attention he accords to Hitchcock sequences, Rothman discovers surprising affinities between Hitchcock's way of thinking cinematically and the philosophical way of thinking Emerson's essays exemplify. He finds that the terms in which Emerson thought about reality, about our "flux of moods," about what it is within us that never changes, about freedom, about America, about reading, about writing, and about thinking are remarkably pertinent to our experience of films and to thinking and writing about them. He also reflects on the implications of this discovery, not only for Hitchcock scholarship but also for film criticism in general.

Marital Misery? You’re Not Alone Contemplating divorce? (Gasp) Never! Murder? (Hmmmmm) Well, maybe…! If your marriage resembles a combat zone more than a covenant commitment, you’re in good company. If You Don’t Die to Self, I May Have to Kill You is packed with juicy foibles and misdeeds candidly expressed by Emmy-nominated TV news reporter Karen Long . Follow her behind the scenes to discover solid spiritual ammunition targeting attitude, gratitude, contentment, forgiveness, self-denial, and even suffering. Romance, suspense, and intrigue mark Karen’s antics, and “what not to dos” reinforce biblical principles that light the way from marital misery to a harmonious hitch. Contemplating Divorce? (Gasp) Never! Murder? (Pause) Well...maybe! The slogan for The Divorce Store reads: “When ‘till death do you part’ isn’t soon enough.” Can you relate? “Instead of just waiting for Paul to keel over, I spent years looking for a younger woman for him, someone who enjoys doing laundry.” “I calculated I’d forgiven Paul the biblically required seven times seventy—490 times—over the course of one weekend alone…” “When ‘two become one flesh,’ you either get some unity or you get Frankenstein. We got a monster of a marriage…” When your marriage resembles a combat zone more than a covenant commitment, you need a few weapons, er…tools at your disposal. Former award-winning TV news reporter Karen Long candidly expresses juicy foibles and misdeeds marking her treacherous memorable twenty-year marriage with Paul. The happy ending? They’re still married. Only now they’re laughing. Karen will arm you with solid spiritual ammunition targeting attitude, gratitude, contentment, forgiveness, and—of course—suffering. Humorously revealing her hard-won wisdom, this book is your ticket out of marital misery and into a harmonious hitch. “A book just like the author—witty, funny, charming, and full of depth. It will make you laugh and cry, but mostly you will learn about yourself and what it takes to finish the marriage journey with a smile on your face.” Congressman James E. Rogan Story Behind the Book Karen Long gave up a lucrative career as a TV news reporter “broadcasting live from the mean streets of Los Angeles ” to go home to a husband, kids, and real action and drama. She tells of being on the frontlines of the home front in this evangelical exposé on the epidemic of marital misery. “Over the years,” Karen says, “my husband, Paul, pushed all my buttons, including the little red one that can blast a nuclear family of five into oblivion. Paul often brought out the very worst in me…allowing me to see my great need for a Savior instead of a good divorce attorney. Yes, this would be a terribly tragic story if it wasn’t such a terrific, true testimony for the Lord.”

Actually, she's the identical twin of the last victim, and she wants Quinn to find her sister's murderer. Quinn, a former NYPD detective, is called into the case by an ambitious chief of police and mobilizes his team of brilliant law-enforcement misfits. But in the concrete canyons of New York, this shocking serial murder case is turning into something very different... Jill Clark came to the city with too many hopes and too little cash. But no one knows the true motives behind a rampage of cold-blooded murderer--or how much more terrifying this is going to get... In for the Kill A madman is stalking women in the city. With the body count rising, it's up to Quinn to unlock the mystery of a madman's past and end his bloody reign. Quinn's got his work cut out--because in a city the size of New York, any one of 8 million faces could be that of a killer--or his next target...
