Jargon, clichés, euphemisms . . . lies. Ever wished there was a phrasebook to help you translate all this endless bullsh*t? When your boss asks 'Can I have a quick word?' (real meaning: I don't have anything to discuss, I just like putting the fear of God into you) or an estate agent describes something as having 'incredible potential' (real meaning: absolute shithole), you'd better have Luke Lewis's essential new book to hand. And if you need a way to spin your latest work disaster, here are numerous tried-and-tested porkies to help you out. Based on the incredibly popular BuzzFeed series 'What People Say vs What They Mean', this in an indispensible - and hilarious - guide to interpreting secret codes, little white lies and complete and utter bollocks. Examples from What People Say at Work vs What They Mean 'Anyone fancy a cup of tea?' - Offer strictly limited to the three people in my immediate vicinity. 'This is beyond my remit' - I can't be arsed to deal with this 'Team player' - Has basic social skills, is not an outright sociopath 'Let's park this for now' - Let's never mention this again 'We wish her all the best in her new job' - Burn in hell, traitor

The relationship between sleep and storytelling is an ancient one. For centuries, sleep has provided writers with a magical ingredient – a passage of time during which great changes miraculously occur, an Orpheus-like voyage through the subconscious daubed with the fantastic. But over the last ten years, our scientific understanding of sleep has been revolutionised. No longer is sleep viewed as a time of simple rest and recuperation. Instead, it is proving to be an intensely dynamic period of brain activity: a vital stage in the re-wiring of memories, the learning of new skills, and the processing of problems and emotions. How will storytelling respond to this new and emerging science of sleep? Here, 14 authors have been invited to work with key scientists to explore various aspects of sleep research: from the possibilities of ‘sleep engineering’ and ‘overnight therapies’, to future-tech ways of harnessing sleep’s problem-solving powers, to the challenges posed by our increasingly 24-hour lifestyles. Just as new hypotheses are being put forward, old hunches are also being confirmed (there’s now a scientific basis for the time-worn advice ‘to sleep on a problem’). As these responses show, sleep and the spinning of stories are still very much entwined. Featuring scientific contributions from: Prof Russell G. Foster, Isabel Hutchison, Dr. Simon Kyle, Dr. Penny Lewis, Dr. Paul Reading, Stephanie Romiszewski, Prof Robert Stickgold, Prof Manuel Schabus, Prof Ed Watkins, Prof Adam Zeman, Dr. Thomas Wehr. Neil Deane has been happily (and unhappily) immersing himself in German culture since moving to Germany from Liverpool, GB at the end of the seventies; this book reveals the conclusions emerging from his observations since then. Starting with an all-important historical overview since "Zero hour" (May 8, 1945), he moves on to describe everyday life and challenges, analyses the German way of thinking and attempts to explain the success story of Europe's most powerful economic power. A chapter on the progress of East-West unity since 1990 and a comprehensive state of the nation statement bring the reader right up to date with the crucial issues facing Germany at the start of the 21st century. Autobiographical, entertaining and non-academic in nature, yet based on facts, current writing and balanced judgement, the book paints a personal and honest picture of Germany today, providing useful help and insights for anybody intending to spend time there on business or pleasure. Anybody wishing to understand modern Germany - and that includes Germans themselves - will find much to ponder on.
