With over twenty years of experience using, developing, and teaching ATLAS.ti, Susanne Friese is the perfect data analysis tour guide. Aware of common challenges and sticking points, she eases readers from readying and organizing data into coding and querying it, providing not only tips on how to prepare for analysis, but also the tools and technical know-how needed to observe, examine, and discuss data. Placing quick software ‘skills training’ tutorials alongside different stages of the data analysis process, she gives readers the opportunity to integrate software training with their actual analysis.

Software is cut-and-dried – every button you press has a predictable effect – but qualitative analysis is open-ended and unfolds in unpredictable ways. This contradiction is best resolved by separating analytic strategies – what you plan to do – from software tactics – how you plan to do it. Expert ATLAS.ti users have unconsciously learned to do this. The Five-Level QDA® method unpacks the process so that you can learn it consciously and efficiently. The first part of the book explains how the contradiction between analytic strategies and software tactics is reconciled by "translating" between them. The second part provides both an in-depth description of how ATLAS.ti works and comprehensive instruction in the five steps of "translation". these steps are illustrated with examples from a variety of research projects. The third part contains real-world qualitative research projects from a variety of disciplines, methodologies, and kinds of qualitative analysis, all illustrated in ATLAS.ti using the Five-Level QDA method. The book is accompanied by three sets of videos demonstrations on the Companion Website. While this book uses screenshots from the current ATLAS.ti Version 8, it is still fully applicable to users of older versions. The book and accompanying videos illustrate the Windows version of ATLAS.ti. As there are some differences in screen and interface design between the Mac and Windows versions please watch the video 'The ATLAS.ti Mac Interface' in the Component Orientation series of videos (available September 2017) The Five-Level QDA method is based on the authors’ combined 40 years of experience teaching ATLAS.ti and other software packages used as platforms for conducting qualitative analysis. After many years observing their students’ challenges they developed the Five-Level QDA method to describe the process that long-time ATLAS.ti experts unconsciously adopt. The Five-Level QDA method is independent of software program or methodology, and the principles apply to any type of qualitative project. The conference proceedings on the first international ATLAS.ti user conference brings together twenty articles from researchers around the world on various aspects of using the software in different research areas, on methodological issues and on issues around teaching and training. The article by Heiner Legewie provides a historic flashback on the ATLAS project and on how it all began at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, back in 1989. Today, 25 years later, ATLAS.ti users often ask for publications that describe the implementation of ATLAS.ti in research projects. With the present volume, we hope to provide some answers. In reviewing and preparing the articles for publication, the authors were encouraged to provide a detailed description of how ATLAS.ti was implemented in their research projects. You also find a number of articles on the application of various methodologies in combination with ATLAS.ti. A common myth is that ATLAS.ti is a “grounded theory” software. You will find that indeed Grounded Theory is one of the methodologies that is applied, but you will also find other approaches like ethnographic content analysis, multimodal rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis, deductive critical discourse analysis or abduktive thematic analysis. If you are interested in integrating ATLAS.ti in your university teaching, you find some examples on how this is done, some of the lessons learned and some good practice tips. In addition to the written format, you can get to know most of the authors by watching their live conference presentations. Offering immensely practical advice, Basics of Qualitative Research, Fourth Edition presents methods that enable researchers to analyze, interpret, and make sense of their data, and ultimately build theory from it. Authors Juliet Corbin and Anselm Strauss (late of the University of San Francisco and co-creator of grounded theory) walk readers step-by-step through the research process—from the formation of the research question through several approaches to coding, analysis, and reporting. Packed with definitions and illustrative examples, this highly accessible book concludes with chapters that present criteria for evaluating a study, as well as responses to common questions posed by students of qualitative research. New end-of-chapter “Insider Insights” contributed by qualitative researchers give readers a sense of what it’s like to work in the field. Significantly revised, this Fourth Edition remains a landmark volume in the study of qualitative methods.

In this volume, progressive experts survey recent trends in qualitative study, which relies on small sample groups and interview data to better represent the context and complexity of social work practice. Chapters address different approaches to qualitative inquiry, applications to essential areas of research and practice, integration of qualitative and quantitative methods, and epistemological issues. This second edition brings even greater depth and relevance to social work qualitative research, including new material that tackles traditional research concerns, such as data quality, ethics, and epistemological stances, and updated techniques in data collection and analysis. To increase the usefulness for students and researchers, the editors have reorganized the text to present basic principles first and then their applications, and they have increased their focus on ethics, values, and theory. New and revised illustrative studies highlight more than ever the connection between effective research and improved social functioning among individuals and groups. The collection continues to feature scholars and practitioners who have shaped the social work research practice canon for more than twenty years, while also adding the innovative work of up-and-coming talent.

The events of 2008 have raised awareness to the possibility of highly derailing impact to savings under the new retirement funding structures, due to their relationship with the financial markets. As a result, many retirees were threatened financially; hence, forced back to work. Efforts by federal officials to boost the U.S. economy by lowering interest rates have resulted in almost zero returns on some federally guaranteed savings accounts popular with retirees. The downward trend continues to bite down seniors incomes, and together with the lingering impact of the 2008 events, have necessitated the need for most retirees to seek income supplements. While many have taken to post-retirement employment as a solution, some others have not been so fortunate in that they cannot work for various reasons. The What to Do part of this book offers suggestions for current and prospective retirees who can or cant work, and those still in their accumulation years, on how to mediate financial shortfall in retirement and ensure that their golden years are golden.

These documents include case intake forms, exit summaries, social histories, case progress notes, and more. This book aims to provide a straight forward guide to performing meaningful qualitative analysis, in a step-by-step approach. The second half of the book contains actual case illustrations of the various methods with actual published articles from SAGE journals. Each case will contain margin notes, introductory remarks, and a complete discussion following the case.

This study focuses on the latent aspects of an ethno-religious conflict, describing why and how people avoid contact with 'out-groups.' Their contact avoidance is largely based on the notion of power. The book shows how contact avoidance towards out-groups is related to people's ethno-religious identification. This is explained by various factors, such as a perceived group threat, out-group distrust, fundamentalism, quantity of contact, and direct experiences of violence. Finally, the book illustrates how education, mass media, and the history of conflict are related with intergroup contact avoidance.
