Punch And Shakespeare In The Victorian Era

The English humour magazine Punch, or the London Charivari, which first appeared in 1841, quickly became something of a national institution with a large and multi-layered readership. Though comic in tone, Punch was deeply serious about upholding high literary and artistic standards, about dealing with serious subject-matter, and about attempting to nurture its readers' appreciation of the national drama and of Shakespeare's plays in particular. The author's detailed examination of Punch's constant advocacy of Shakespeare reveals telling new evidence concerning the ubiquitous presence of Shakespeare within Victorian culture. New research in the Punch archives and elsewhere also reveals the identities of many of the Punch authors and artists. The author shows how those who worked for Punch often subsumed their collective identities within the single persona of Mr. Punch, a fictional creation who repeatedly presents himself in both texts and graphics as a close friend and admirer of Shakespeare, a man able to remind Victorian readers constantly of the supreme literary and moral values represented by Shakespeare's works.

He takes the reader into the cramped confines of the colonial bar room, describing the friendships, misunderstandings, and conflicts which were generated among the city's drinkers, and investigates the profitability of running a tavern in a city which, until independence, set maximum prices on the cost of drinks and services in its public houses.

Punch is the story of two twenty-somethings living under assumed identities, put into hiding by the FBI. Out of touch with their families and friends and ignored by the very people who put them there, they each must invent new methods of adapting in a world they no longer understand. This book asks the question: What happens when the world no longer presents a reference point? For Jessica Lansing, the answer lies in pursuing her thesis after putting it on hold for two years. But as the months drag on without a word from the FBI and haunted by her sense of herself and her place in the world, she pushes the envelope, not always the best answer when you’re being hunted by a serial killer. Conrad Wood, on the other hand, just wants to get back home to Eve, his fiancée, his predictable job at the Steakhouse and his horse Hamburger. But he, too, finds himself ignored by the FBI, and left to himself in an obvious play on his psyche, he, too, must learn to improvise and adapt even against his own will. Paul Bung is the catalyst in the psychological game of cat-and-mouse. And he would like nothing better than to get the whole tawdry business over with and get back to his life as a fashion mogul and to his stuffed bunny, Ignatius.

The hand-puppet play starring the characters Punch and Judy was introduced from England and became extremely popular in the United States in the 1800s. This book details information on nearly 350 American Punch players. It explores the significance of the 19th–century American show as a reflection of the attitudes and conditions of its time and place. The century was a time of changing feelings about what it means to be human. There was an intensified awareness of the racial, cultural, social and economical diversity of the human species, and a corresponding concern for the experience of human oneness. The American Punch and Judy show was one of the manifestations of these conditions.
