This is a book of memories. Sitting at the kitchen table, seven children of different families of early settlers recount stories of growing up during the opening quarter of the last century. They all lived in or near the small city of Armstrong, which is surrounded by the rural municipality of Spallumcheen, in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. Six of them live here still. Go, West, young men, and young women too! Their parents came from eastern Canada, the United States, and Britain, each with a varied and fascinating past. They told these stories to their children. They were looking for adventure, love, success, a place of their own. Some achieved their desire by hard work, luck, perseverance, and ingenuity, and their children shared the experience. Others were overcome by circumstances and their children shared that too. Together parents and children helped to build the community of Armstrong Spallumcheen. These stories tell a part of how it happened.

Pull Up A Chair Fireside Tales And Stories From Rural Donegal During The War Years

Shamus and Dan are two characters who meet up for company and conversation in rural Loughros Point in Ardara Co Donegal Ireland. It is an area of outstanding beauty but also on the wild Atlantic coast of Ireland. Shamus is in his eighties and is a former Gaelic league teacher and activist, Dan is his neighbor, and is in his thirties. There is warmth, innocents and kindness between Shamus and Dan, these were hard times in rural Donegal due to poverty emigration and world recession along with the great depression. The conversations are writings from my Grandfather Brian O Cianaigh born Ardara 1877, he died during the war 1943. The ten years before he died, he wrote the Gaelic column "Are you learning Irish" and while i was researching i found this series of writing spanning the period from October 1937 to April 1941. I contributed to the end of the book to actual events that happened in Derry City during Feis Colmcille, Easter 1941. The main concern for both men was the preservation of their native language, also the war clouds are hanging overhead. They talk a lot about the cursed boundary which is the border that divides Ireland. Incredibly eighty two years later the border is still making world headlines because of Brexit backstop. There is a vein of humor running through their conversations, there is nice Christmas stories, talk of the fairies, but their conversations can wander in all direction from the saving of the turf to the price of eggs. So if you want to be transported back to rural Ireland 1937 and hear conversation that has been buried for eighty two years you may well enjoy this book, well "Pull up a chair." Brian O Cianaigh spent his entire life dedicated to the Irish league movement. He was an award winning Playwright, Poet and singer and holds a unique record of first prize in each category at the Oireachtas in Dublin during the early 1900s. He was the chief organizer of the first ever Gaelic literature festival of New York City 1906 and a founder member of the Gaelic League in Strabane 1902. His Gaelic books wrote in 1902 were also then commissioned for use in the National schools of Ireland. He never got to meet any of his grandchildren. My mother was five year old when he died. To my mother Eibhlin Rose O Cianaigh this book "Pull up a chair" I respectfully dedicate to her. May she live long and prosper.

The title Pull Up A Chair conveys just that: a warm invitation. The book hosts a collection of poems by Kedan Harris who has been a journalist, teacher, and education director. The work, his first in poetry, is the culmination of months-long effort, though years in the making. The poems represent an endeavor in reflection and thought derived from events that could have gone unrecalled, observations that would likely have remained unsaid, and musings that might otherwise have been fleeting. Yet, through the lens of a Jamaican upbringing, raising a family in the United States, and some travel, these sentiments now find expression in Pull Up A Chair.

Schottenfreude is a unique, must-have dictionary, complete with newly coined words that explore the idiosyncrasies of life as only the German language can. Ever thought, There should be a German word for that? Well, thanks to the brilliantly original mind behind Schott’s Original Miscellany, now there is. In what other language but German could you construct le mot juste for a secret love of bad foods, the inability to remember jokes, Sunday-afternoon depression, the urge to yawn, the glee of gossip, reassuring your hairdresser, delight at the changing of the seasons, the urge to hoard, or the ineffable pleasure of a cold pillow? A beguiling, ideal gift book for the Gelehrte or anyone on your list—just beware of rapidly expanding (and potentially incomprehensible) vocabularies.

Samuel Wesley Gathing: A Closer Look is the moving true story of Sam and Beatrice Gathing and the struggles they faced rearing their fourteen children during the era of the Jim Crow laws. These laws meant that both society and the system enforced the damaging view that their children were just stupid black kids. In this climate of institutionalized discrimination, Sam had to maneuver his way through a massive minefield of irrational hatred intended to destroy him and his family. Sam and Beatrice began their life together in December 1929, in Desoto County, Mississippi, taking the gift of a mule named Rock and a big red cow to start their farm. Over the years, as their family expanded, so did the land that they farmed. Sam learned to live by the rules of the day but was always a true leader to both his family and to his friends. Through all the challenges that Sam encountered, his faith in God never wavered he believed that the truth could be found in God's words and actions, not in the laws that were meant to harm him and his people.

Pub Theology

Author : Bryan Berghoef
ISBN : 9781621893585
Genre : Religion
File Size : 84.54 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 555
Read : 1200

From London to New York to Ann Arbor, people are gathering in pubs and bars to communicate, connect, and learn from one another over the topic of religion, of all things. In Pub Theology, pastor, writer, and pub theologian Bryan Berghoef draws from his own experience in one such setting in northern Michigan. Berghoef contends that for too long the church has insisted on setting the terms for how one can find and encounter God. Yet what if God is to be found in places we haven't been looking at all: in a coworker who doesn't believe in God, in a Buddhist neighbor, in a friend who prefers a yoga studio to a sanctuary? This book will move readers to shift toward a more chastened, humble, and inviting faith. A faith that seeks not to teach, but to learn; not to speak, but to listen. A faith that will have a seat at the table in the important religious conversations our world is having. Real-life stories gleaned from conversations and encounters during pub theology gatherings, combined with the author's own experience in grappling with these issues, make for an intriguing and enlightening read. So what are you waiting for? Pull up a chair and join the conversation!

My Wingmen

Author : Lorraine Recchia
ISBN : 1452559821
Genre : Music
File Size : 67.49 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 486
Read : 1244

My Wingmen is a true account of my journey with angels. They entered my world during a period of inner reflection as I researched personal growth during a challenging life transition. The books I was drawn to came alive as I read about alternate realities and spiritual concepts. I witnessed these realities as my home became a stomping ground for angels and spirit guides, where I enjoyed their appearances and intervention. They showed me how to interpret and discern the lighter side of the earth realm, and they gave me examples of what clear expanded believing could accomplish. As I began to openly talk about prayer, my psychic senses began to blossom. I was embraced by two angels, and they offered me healing along with their companionship. They have become my teachers, and they have helped me connect with truths beyond my wildest dreams. It was in expanded thought that I was able to grasp a world that is clearer to me now, as this present-day drama fades to black. I have opened my arms to an enlightened world, because where there is love, there is no room for fear. Meet my wingmen, Archangel Michael and Archangel Raphael.
