This report provides information on cancer incidence and mortality in Portugal. Findings include that: smoking-related cancers are on the increase, especially in younger age groups (lung cancer for both sexes and oral cancer in men); and cervical cancer rates are the highest in the EU. Mortality from lifestyle and diet-related cancers, such as colorectal cancer, as well as prostate cancers are increasing faster than elsewhere in southern Europe. The data analysis demonstrates the need for a comprehensive national programme including a nationwide system for monitoring cancer incidence, mortality and survival; health education activities; and secondary prevention such as effective cervical cancer screening programmes.
