Luciano Berio's Sinfonia (1968) marked a return by the composer to orchestral writing after a gap of six years. This in-depth study demonstrates the central position the work occupies in Berio's output. David Osmond-Smith discusses the way in which Berio used the Bororo myth described in Levi-Strauss's Le cru et le cuit as a framework for Sinfonia. This is one of many influences in the work, which also include Joyce's 'Sirens' chapter from Ulysses, Beckett's The Unnameable and the scherzo from Mahler's 2nd Symphony. The listener who takes refuge in the score of Sinfonia, argues Osmond-Smith, finds there a maze of allusions to things beyond the score. It is some of those allusions that this book seeks to illuminate.

Playing with Words is a double-concept album with four sides of an interrelated theme. The acoustic side explores the ways words add layers to our experiences. The electric side reveals the tensions between words and their meanings, especially when the words strike out on their own and the connection between the writer and the word breaks down. In the third side, the writer disappears. The fourth side is a return to the cosmos through myth, history, mystery, and spirit. Sometimes it might seem audacious, but its mostly just playing with words.

Are you a word-sleuth? Do you derive great pleasure in punning away an afternoon or tackling the crossword puzzle like a fiend? Does the combination of humor and etymological scholarship make you weak in the knees? If so, this book’s for you. Clever readers (and others too!) will laugh in wonder at examples from well-known wits and infamous wisecracks, as well as phrase or two from your dedicated author. Don’t be intimidated by the company that you’ll keep between the covers of Words Gone Wild. Think of author Jim Bernhard as the cruise director, cheekily introducing the work of Shakespeare, Queen Victoria, George S. Kaufman, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, and many more as he defines and exploits the pleasures of puns, limericks, word puzzles, spoonerisms, malapropisms, anagrams, tongue-twisters, croakers, double-entendres, and more! Enjoy all types of word play, such as: Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. The pony was unable to talk because he was a little hoarse. Two peanuts walk into a bar. One was a salted. The chicken that crossed the road was poultry in motion. As the gardener said when asked why he was cutting the grass with a pair of scissors: ?That’s all there is; there isn’t any mower.” Whether you enjoy playing with words, watching words at play, or consider yourself a word-watching player, you’ll love this book. After all, the words in this book just want you to have fun.

Wordplay And The Discourse Of Video Games

In this timely new book, Christopher Paul analyzes how the words we use to talk about video games and the structures that are produced within games shape a particular way of gaming by focusing on how games create meaning, lead to identification and division, persuade, and circulate ideas. Paul examines the broader social discourse about gaming, including: the way players are socialized into games; the impact of the lingering association of video games as kid's toys; the dynamics within specific games (including Grand Theft Auto and EA Sports Games); and the ways in which players participate in shaping the discourse of games, demonstrated through examples like the reward system of World of Warcraft and the development of theorycraft. Overall, this book illustrates how video games are shaped by words, design and play; all of which are negotiated, ongoing practices among the designers, players, and society that construct the discourse of video games.

All students can benefit from a deeper understanding of how our language works. Playing With Language shows elementary school educators (K–6) how to think about, talk about, and manipulate language out of context. This cognitive skill set, known as metalinguistic awareness, is an important component of reading ability. This practical guide scales activities and teaching suggestions to students’ age, linguistic background, and individual strengths and challenges. The authors offer suggestions for introducing metalinguistic concepts like phonological, semantic, and syntactic awareness with fun activities like games, songs, rhymes, and riddles. The book also identifies and explains research that supports using metalinguistic teaching with diverse students and English learners to build skills in multiple areas, including reading comprehension and decoding ability. Teachers will find that students introduced to language play become continually engaged with language, finding real-world examples with wonder and delight. Book Features: Compiles information on all forms of metalinguistic awareness (MA), spanning different linguistic units and developmental reading levels.Contains personal anecdotes and classroom-testedÊinstructional recommendations for encouraging language play. Presents research on how individual language skills affect reading ability.Offers suggestions for full lesson plans with small groups or whole classes of children, as well as ideas for infusing MA activities into everyday exchanges and book choices.
