"Turnabout Trial: Revived Turnabout") is an adventure game first released in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban (逆転裁判? lit. "Turnabout Trial") for the Game Boy Advance in 2001. It was then remade for a 2005 worldwide release on the Nintendo DS with touchscreen and microphone support, as well as a new episode with the DS' exclusive features that would be used in later games of the series. The Game Boy Advance version was ported to Windows in 2005 and to Wii via WiiWare in 2009, with a separate release for Episode 5 via WiiWare in 2010. A mobile game with similar name to the English version was released in 2009, but to date it only has Episode 1. The game was also ported to iOS: Episodes 1-2 in Japan in 2009; the whole game in North America in 2010. The game was released for Nintendo 3DS in 2014 as part of the Phoenix Wright Trilogy compilation. The player controls Phoenix Wright, a rookie attorney who takes on different cases in order to find his clients "Not Guilty" by proving their innocence. To do that, he investigates crime scenes, speaks to people involved in the case, and cross-examines witnesses. Guilty until proven innocent. That's the way the justice system works here. All trials start immediately and are mandated to last no more than three days. Prosecutors are free to introduce any evidence, fabricated or not, and manipulate witness testimony to highlight only those facts damaging to defendants, the truth be damned. The courts are no longer about protecting the innoncent or punishing the guilty, but for convicting everyone. Phoenix Wright's mission is to remedy the situation. As a defense attorney, his duty involves preparing a vigorous defense for his client, but Wright is about absolute truth, and he puts everything he has on the line to get to the bottom of each and every case.Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney gives you the opportunity to guide Phoenix through five such cases, with several bound together to uncover one of the greatest mysteries of his time. This is accomplished through a first-person text adventure.Outside the courtroom, you'll have to survey the areas around the scene of the crime, collecting valuable evidence and interviewing witnesses to uncover valuable facts.Once the court proceedings are underway, you must read through witness testimony in order to find inconsistencies, and then Phoenix can nail the witness to the wall with contradictory evidence.Piece together the facts, and justice will prevail.Fail, and your client will find himself in the pokey. Ten Things Video Games Can Teach Us

WOULD YOU KILL ONE PERSON TO SAVE FIVE OTHERS? If you could upload all of your memories into a machine, would that machine be you? Is it possible we're all already artificial intelligences, living inside a simulation? These sound like questions from a philosophy class, but in fact they're from modern, popular video games. Philosophical discussion often uses thought experiments to consider ideas that we can't test in real life, and media like books, films, and games can make these thought experiments far more accessible to a non-academic audience. Thanks to their interactive nature, video games can be especially effective ways to explore these ideas. Each chapter of this book introduces a philosophical topic through discussion of relevant video games, with interviews with game creators and expert philosophers. In ten chapters, this book demonstrates how video games can help us to consider the following questions: 1. Why do video games make for good thought experiments? (From the ethical dilemmas of the Mass Effect series to 'philosophy games'.) 2. What can we actually know? (From why Phoenix Wright is right for the wrong reasons to whether No Man's Sky is a lie.) 3. Is virtual reality a kind of reality? (On whether VR headsets like the Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and HTC Vive deal in mass-market hallucination.) 4. What constitutes a mind? (From the souls of Beyond: Two Souls to the synths of Fallout 4.) 5. What can you lose before you're no longer yourself? (Identity crises in the likes of The Swapper and BioShock Infinite.) 6. Does it mean anything to say we have choice? (Determinism and free will in Bioshock, Portal 2 and Deus Ex.) 7. What does it mean to be a good or dutiful person? (Virtue ethics in the Ultima series and duty ethics in Planescape: Torment.) 8. Is there anything better in life than to be happy? (Utilitarianism in Bioshock 2 and Harvest Moon.) 10. How should we be governed, for whom and by who? (Government and rights in Eve Online, Crusader Kings, Democracy 3 and Fable 3.) 11. Is it ever right to take another life? And how do we cope with our own death? (The Harm Thesis and the good death in To The Moon and Lost Odyssey.)

This accessible textbook gives students the tools they need to analyze games using strategies borrowed from textual analysis. As the field of game studies grows, videogame writing is evolving from the mere evaluation of gameplay, graphics, sound, and replayablity, to more reflective writing that manages to convey the complexity of a game and the way it is played in a cultural context. Clara Fernández-Vara’s concise primer provides readers with instruction on the basic building blocks of game analysis—examination of context, content and reception, and formal qualities—as well as the vocabulary necessary for talking about videogames' distinguishing characteristics. Examples are drawn from a range of games, both digital and non-digital—from Portal and World of Warcraft to Monopoly—and the book provides a variety of exercises and sample analyses, as well as a comprehensive ludography and glossary. In this second edition of the popular textbook, Fernández-Vara brings the book firmly up-to-date, pulling in fresh examples from ground-breaking new works in this dynamic field. Introduction to Game Analysis remains a unique practical tool for students who want to become more fluent writers and critics not only of videogames, but also of digital media overall.
