Ask an economist what a recession is, and you'll likely get the answer ''a decline in gross domestic product lasting two or more consecutive quarters.'' ( Gross domestic product, or GDP, is the total value of goods and services produced in a country.) At the time of this writing, America isn't officially in a recession (although many analysts say it's just a matter of getting the numbers that'll prove that the second-quarter decline has actually occurred), but the economy is definitely in a downturn. Home values are falling, employment is down, real income is down, and energy costs are skyrocketing. So how long will this downturn last? No one knows. Some think it'll be over in a matter of months; others predict the recession could last a year or longer. None of this is good news. Fortunately, you can do more than cross your fingers and hope for good luck.... In uncertain times, you may find yourself, despite your best efforts, facing a financial catastrophe like a bankruptcy or foreclosure. Even in these circumstances, you still have options-maybe not many, and maybe not pleasant ones, but options that can help you weather even these storms. Bottom line: In a stumbling economy, you have to tread carefully, but you can still move forward. This book helps you one step at a time.

According to the United States Bankruptcy Courts, the number of bankruptcies filed each year is on the rise. People file bankruptcy for a variety of reasons, such as preventing foreclosure on their homes, preventing repossession of property, loss of employment, or reducing or eliminating debts. The most common types of bankruptcy for which individuals file are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Chapter 7 involves the surrender of property to pay debts, while a Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows for the retention of property but requires payments over the next three to five years. A person who finds himself or herself in this undesirable situation may wonder how they are ever going to repair their credit. How to Get Credit after Filing Bankruptcy: The Complete Guide to Getting and Keeping Your Credit under Control provides the answers in a clear-cut, easy-to-read manner. The author tells you how to take charge of your credit so you can apply for loans and mortgages and obtain low interest rates. In addition, you will learn how to order a copy of your credit report, how to check your credit report for accuracy, how to read it, how to avoid discrimination and credit repair scams, how to apply for an unsecured credit card, how to report your good work to bureaus if creditors do not, how to maintain good relationships with your bank and creditors, how to consolidate all your debt, how to lessen your reliance on credit cards, and how to decide if lawyer-assisted credit repair is right for you. You will also learn simple strategies for making payments on time and for rebuilding your credit. Whether you have just declared bankruptcy or you have been living with the stigma for years, this new book will provide you with all the information you need to take a step in the right direction. "The key feature of the modern U.S. personal bankruptcy law is to provide debtors a financial fresh start through debt discharge. The primary justification for the discharge policy is to preserve human capital by maintaining incentives for work. In this paper, we test this fresh start argument by providing the first estimate of the effect of personal bankruptcy filing on the labor supply using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). Our econometric approach controls for the endogenous self-selection of bankruptcy filing and allows for dependence over time for the same household. We find that filing for bankruptcy does not have a positive impact on annual hours worked by bankrupt households, a result mainly due to the wealth effects of debt discharge. The finding is robust to a number of alternative model specifications and sample selections. Therefore, our analysis does not find supporting evidence for the human capital argument for bankruptcy discharge"--Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia web site.
