In this groundbreaking study, Maram Epstein identifies filial piety as the dominant expression of love in Qing dynasty texts. The Cambridge Companion To Orthodox Christian Theology

Orthodox Christian theology is often presented as the direct inheritor of the doctrine and tradition of the early Church. But continuity with the past is only part of the truth; it would be false to conclude that the eastern section of the Christian Church is in any way static. Orthodoxy, building on its patristic foundations, has blossomed in the modern period. This volume focuses on the way Orthodox theological tradition is understood and lived today. It explores the Orthodox understanding of what theology is: an expression of the Church's life of prayer, both corporate and personal, from which it can never be separated. Besides discussing aspects of doctrine, the book portrays the main figures, themes and developments that have shaped Orthodox thought. There is particular focus on the Russian and Greek traditions, as well as the dynamic but less well-known Antiochian tradition and the Orthodox presence in the West.

VEDENIE, nous, akedia ... To All the Weak, the Feeble, and the Little Ones (like me) [С нами Бог] With love dedicated to M., and to M. Know that: /you better come to realize that:/ - You do what your father does - all the worthy things he does - you do, too! - You need only remember him with GRATITUDE every night and every crisis (at least) - and all his sweetness, strength, and riches - are yours (for the asking). [I hear some of you saying they know not their father! - They may well not know him - but their heart does! So you, too: ] You just listen: - GRATITUDE / БЛАГОДАРЕНИЕ ... You hear out (again and again): - GRATITUDE / БЛАГОДАРЕНИЕ ... And you experience: - GRATITUDE / БЛАГОДАРЕНИЕ ... At first it seems [as if] you were giving thanks - No! The second or the third time around you already know Who the Giver of all is - all you have to do is attune your heart, and let it FEEL the GRATITUDE /БЛАГОДАРЕНИЕ/ - and you experience the downpour of all mercies, goods (kindness), and all the merits of the Giver of all (ВСЕПОДАТЕЛЯ Христос) Christ - Who gives everything - TO ALL - hears everything and first responds to GRATITUDE / БЛАГОДАРЕНИЕ... Аnd – yes! – you do what your Father does! With heart-felt GRATITUDE / БЛАГОДАРЕНИЕ... what used to be nothing more but mimicking or 'play' is all too real! You are still weak, feeble and little but you really do what your Father does! Слава Богу за все! С нами Бог! Glory be to God for everything! The Lord is with us!

The Empire Of The Self

ISBN : 9781421407265
Genre : Literary Criticism

Format : PDF, ePub, Mobi

In The Empire of the Self, Christopher Star studies the question of how political reality affects the concepts of body, soul, and self. Star argues that during the early Roman Empire the establishment of autocracy and the development of a universal ideal of individual autonomy were mutually enhancing phenomena. The Stoic ideal of individual empire or complete self-command is a major theme of Seneca’s philosophical works. The problematic consequences of this ideal are explored in Seneca’s dramatic and satirical works, as well as in the novel of his contemporary Petronius. Star examines the rhetorical links between these diverse texts. He also demonstrates a significant point of contact between two writers generally thought to be antagonists—the idea that imperial speech structures reveal the self.

Dishonorable Passions

From the Pentagon to the wedding chapel, there are few issues more controversial today than gay rights. As William Eskridge persuasively demonstrates in Dishonorable Passions, there is nothing new about this political and legal obsession. The American colonies and the early states prohibited sodomy as the crime against nature, but rarely punished such conduct if it took place behind closed doors. By the twentieth century, America’s emerging regulatory state targeted degenerates and (later) homosexuals. The witch hunts of the McCarthy era caught very few Communists but ruined the lives of thousands of homosexuals. The nation’s sexual revolution of the 1960s fueled a social movement of people seeking repeal of sodomy laws, but it was not until the Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas (2003) that private sex between consenting adults was decriminalized. With dramatic stories of both the hunted (Walt Whitman and Margaret Mead) and the hunters (Earl Warren and J. Edgar Hoover), Dishonorable Passions reveals how American sodomy laws affected the lives of both homosexual and heterosexual Americans. Certain to provoke heated debate, Dishonorable Passions is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of sexuality and its regulation in the United States

The Problem Of The Passions

Women, says conventional wisdom, are warm, nurturing caregivers with an intrinsically enhanced capacity for attachment and compassion. Feminists, says the popular image, are full of rage, devoid of the feelings that are natural to women. How have feminists themselves dealt with this dualism and, more specifically, with the disagreeable passions? What has too often been missing from discussions of women's psychology in social theory is an account of women as ambivalent: both empathic and enraged, loving and hating. The Problem of the Passions fills this void. Examining the work of such feminist theorists as Carol Gilligan, Nancy Chodorow, Jessica Benjamin, and Dorothy Dinnerstein in a new light, Burack argues that feminist social theory can be repaired through attention to the pioneering psychoanalytic work of Melanie Klein. Sure to be of interest to feminists, psychoanalysts, political scientists, and social theorists, The Problem of the Passions is essential reading for anyone concerned with feminism and questions of identity in social thought.

The Orthodox Corruption Of Scripture

File Size : 32.40 MB
Format : PDF, Docs

Victors not only write history: they also reproduce the texts. Bart Ehrman explores the close relationship between the social history of early Christianity and the textual tradition of the emerging New Testament, examining how early struggles between Christian "heresy" and "orthodoxy" affected the transmission of the documents over which many of the debates were waged. He makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the social and intellectual history of early Christianity and raises intriguing questions about the relationship of readers to their texts, especially in an age when scribes could transform the documents they reproduced. This edition includes a new afterword surveying research in biblical interpretation over the past twenty years.

From its roots in the South Bronx over thirty years ago, hip-hop has swept across continents and oceans, shaping the music and mores of urban culture. It is more than just music. Hip-hop is a lifestyle that encompasses attitude, fashion, and a largely counter-Christian worldview. Transcending ethnic, geographic, generational, and economic barriers, hip-hop places one of the church’s biggest mission opportunities right outside our windows.Un.orthodox equips church leaders and parents alike to understand and engage a culture that is as near as our schools, our communities, and even our homes. Author Tommy Kyllonen has seen hip-hop from the inside as a recording artist, as well as through the eyes of a pastor whose congregation has set the model for a groundswell of young urban churches focusing on hip-hop culture. Offering unique perspectives on the history, current state, and future of the hip-hop movement, Kyllonen shows what a hip-hop targeted ministry can look like in worship, outreach, evangelism, service, and discipleship.Using his own story as an example, Tommy shows how you can combine the hip-hop culture with faith.

Modes Of Irrationality

My purpose in this study is to explore various forms of irrationality and to name some true irrationals in order to find the bounds of reason. The irrational-if there is such -sets a priori limits to philosophical investigation, for reason must stop before unreason's province. I begin by defining a primary meaning of rational. Forming, then, by opposition, the genus irrational, I analyze the various species of the irrational traditionally offered as true irrationals. I then judge which irrationals do inhere in in nature or in spirit. PART I THE IRRATIONALITY OF THE WORLD CHAPTER] REASON To understand a primary and consistent meaning of the "rational" it is necessary to see how the term has been used. In the Theaetetus, Socrates, interested in what it means to have knowledge, sets about finding a rational answer and, by his analysis, illustrates a primary meaning of reason. In answer to Socrates' question. What is knowledge, Theaetetus responds with instances of knowledge: Then I think the things one can learn from Theodorus are knowledge - geometry and all the sciences you mentioned just now; and then there are the crafts of the cobbler and other workmen. Each and all of these are knowledge and nothing else. ' Yet a mere enumeration of particulars does not satisfy Socrates.
