Take one self-deprecating idiot with a sense of adventure, a sense of humour but no sense of direction, and add a vindictive GPS which also has no sense of direction and you have One Man on a Bike, a Greek Oddity. This book is a record of Richard's month long, solo trip from England to Greece and back on his motorbike. With his incredible propensity for disaster, he bumbles through Europe in his own special style attempting to absorb his surroundings whilst keeping his inner Mr Angry at bay. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he doesn't. You'll accompany Richard through his six-thousand mile, little boys adventure. You'll either laugh with him or at him, but by the end of the book you'll understand a little more about what it's like to be someone who struggles to reach the dizzy heights of average.

This book is about my month long, 10,000 mile, solo motorbike trip from Buxted in East Sussex to the Sahara Desert and back. Along the way I meet interesting people, a thief, a number of policemen, a very sweet donkey, a large mountain range, a suicidal black bee and a scorpion that fell from my ceiling. I rode through France, over the Pyrenees and through Spain, over the Gibraltar Strait and into Morocco, west to the coast, south to Rabat and Casablanca, inland to Marrakesh, over the High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate, then to Zagora, Erfoud, Errachidia, Merzouga and Mhamid. Oh, and back again. I experienced the phenomenal 50 degree heat of the Sahara Desert in the summer whilst wearing thick, black motorbike leathers, I saw sights that will remain in my heart forever, I ate a dinner that left me with a bottom like a red hot bullet hole and I rode through rain like you've never seen before. So, why not join me for my adventure of a life time and enjoy my humour, my propensity for disaster and my lust for laughter. From the back: "After getting on my bike I became so excited that I just couldn't sit still, I was twitching like an idiot, talking non-stop and rocking in my seat. When I left it was all I could do to stop myself from screaming and punching the air. I somehow managed to control myself but about 50 yards later I looked in my mirror and saw my wife standing there, on her own watching me leave. Every little bit of excitement instantly turned to guilt and loneliness, the feeling was so strong that I almost blubbered in my helmet. However, I wasn't just leaving my wife, son and dog, I was also leaving my home, job and most importantly, familiarity. Everything from this point forward was going to be very different in a 'make it up as you go' kind of way. Well, that was the first 200 yards of my trip, only another 10,000 miles to go. This was going to be one hell of a ride!"

What would happen if you were cycling to the office and just kept on pedalling? Needing a change, Mike Carter did just that. Following the Thames to the sea he embarked on an epic 5,000 mile ride around the entire British coastline - the equivalent of London to Calcutta. He encountered drunken priests, drag queens and gnome sanctuaries. He met fellow travellers and people building for a different type of future. He also found a spirit of unbelievable kindness and generosity that convinced him that Britain is anything but broken. This is the inspiring and very funny tale of the five months Mike spent cycling the byways of the nation.

Few British schoolchildren of the seventies can have been as obsessed with the Tour de France as William Fotheringham, who smuggled copies of Miroir du Cyclisme into lessons to read inside his books. He saw the Tour for the first time in 1984, avidly following that year's race on television in the Normandy village where he lived. Since joining the Guardian in 1989, William Fotheringham has been at the forefront of British cycling journalism. Here he reflects on the events of the last twenty-three years - the triumphs, the tragedies and the scandals that have engulfed the world's most demanding sport. Key articles from his career are annotated with notes and reflections. What would he have said if he'd known then what we all know now about Lance Armstrong? Which cyclists and teams were not all they seemed? And which victories still rank as the greatest of all time? This is the definitive collection of cycling reporting.

From a literary perspective, this will certainly be the best collection of the year in science fiction and fantasy. There are many award winners and many that have been selected for various Year's Best anthologies among the thirty-one stories, which include: "Petting Zoo," "The Tree Is My Hat," "The Island of Dr. Death and Other Stories," "The Hero as Werewolf," "Seven American Nights," "The Fifth Head of Cerberus," "The Detective of Dreams," and "A Cabin on the Coast." Gene Wolfe has produced possibly the finest and most significant body of short fiction in the SF and fantasy field in the last fifty years, and is certainly among the greatest living writers to emerge from the genres. This collection of poems by Vietnam veteran Bruce Weigl provides “a searing memento of the war that refuses to be forgotten” (San Francisco Chronicle). “Song of Napalm is more than a collection of beautifully wrought, heart-wrenching and often very funny poems. It’s a narrative, the story of an American innocent’s descent into hell and his excruciating return to life on the surface. Weigl may have written the best novel so far about the Vietnam War, and along the way a dozen truly memorable poems.” —Russell Banks “Song of Napalm is one of the best books of any genre about the war—and about human endurance.” —The Kansas City Star “Weigl bears true witness to the reality of war, and his work takes its place alongside the strongest war poetry of this century.” —The Hudson Review “Reading these poems I am struck with something close to awe for the resilience of the human body and the human heart. I can only compare Song of Napalm with the remarkable poetry of Wilfred Owen and Robert Graves. I cherish Bruce Weigl’s poetry as a great gift.” —Larry Heinemann, author of Paco’s Story

Archeology Of The Circle

A “tough and honest” collection by one of America’s foremost poets of the combat experience—“A treasure of wonderful simplicity and complex beauty” (Clarence Major, author of Configurations). With Song of Napalm, Bruce Weigl established himself as a poet of incomparable power and lyric fury, whose work stands as an elegy to the countless lives dramatically altered by war. Archeology of the Circle brings together the major work of this major American poet. Collected here for the first time—from eight volumes of poetry spanning two decades—Archeology of the Circle charts Weigl’s literary arc toward a hard-bitten and sensuous lyric. Out of the horror of individual experience, he has fashioned poetry that offers solace to the disillusioned and bears transcendent resonance for all of us. Archeology of the Circle illustrates Bruce Weigl’s remarkable creative achievements and signifies his own personal salvation through his writing. “Few poets of any generation have written so searingly into of the trauma of war, inscribing its wound while refusing the fragile suture of redemption. Here is the haunted utterance of diasporic selfhood, a poetry of aftermath and consequence, an answer to the call for an ethos of infinite obligation. In this, and in the breadth of his accomplishment, Bruce Weigl is one of the most important poets of our time.” —Carolyn Forch, author of The Country Between Us
