Originally written around 49 AD for his father-in-law Paulinus, Seneca here brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that people waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to Seneca, nature gives people enough time to do what is really important and it is up to the individual to allot it properly.

Like the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca's Letters are a treasure of practical wisdom on how to live and enjoy life. The focus is on living a simple, stress-free life thorough the use of rationalism. Seneca's timeless essays provide practical steps for people to deal with the human suffering that comes with life's problems. Topics featured range from discussions on the shortness of life and anger to immortality and death. The Letters are part of the foundation of Stoic thought making Seneca one of the indispensable thinkers from Ancient Roman philosophy. Although Stoicism is not now as widely practiced as it once was, many people can still find wisdom and inspiration through Seneca's words of advice.

Excerpt from Treatises on Providence, on Tranquillity of Mind, on Shortness of Life, on Happy Life: Together With Select Epistles, Epigrammata, an Introduction, Copious Notes and Scripture Parallelisms The editors trust, therefore, that they are supplying a real want when they offer to the American public some of the best writings of the long unfamiliar Seneca. The text employed is that of Fickert (leipzig, 1842 because, though not the most recent, it is by far the most critical, as it is derived from ms. Authority. The readings of Haase's edition (leipzig, 1851 - 3) and of other editions are referred to in the Notes as occasion has seemed to require. The orthography is conformed to that now generally agreed upon by scholars as the most correct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Might people one day live for ever? Would they want to? What sense can be made of ideas commonly referred to in terms of an 'afterlife'? What about notions of Heaven and Hell, of Purgatory and reincarnation? And in what sort of state are human beings expected to be during this 'afterlife' - immortal souls or resurrected bodies (and does either notion make sense)? What about the fact that any 'afterlife' concerns not just the fate of individuals but of society ('communion of saints') and even the physical universe itself? This book tries to survey some of the existing arguments about life 'after' death, with chapters on material from Christian tradition (particularly the New Testament and the Early Church) and from the philosophy of religion. It then attempts to reach its own conclusions, drawing on Kant and Barth in order to suggest that death is to be overcome rather than survived.
