The final installment of the Steps on the Path to Enlightenment series examines the nature of reality with a master class in Buddhist Middle Way philosophy and meditation. The late Geshe Sopa was a refugee monk from Tibet sent to the United States by the Dalai Lama in 1963. He became a professor at the University of Wisconsin, training a generation of Western Buddhist scholars, and was a towering figure in the transmission of the Buddhism to the West. In this fifth and final volume of his commentary on Lama Tsongkhapa’s masterwork on the graduated steps of the Buddhist path, Geshe Sopa explains the practice of superior insight, or wisdom, the pinnacle of the bodhisattva's perfections. All the Buddhist practices are for the purpose of developing wisdom, for it is wisdom that liberates from the cycle of suffering. All other positive actions, from morality to deep states of meditation, have no power to liberate unless they are accompanied by insight into the nature of reality. With unparalled precision, Geshe Sopa unpacks this central principle with scholarly virtuosity, guiding the reader through the progressive stages of realization.

The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Tib. Lam rim chen mo) is one of the brightest jewels in the world’s treasury of sacred literature. The author, Tsong-kha-pa, completed it in 1402, and it soon became one of the most renowned works of spiritual practice and philosophy in the world of Tibetan Buddhism. Because it condenses all the exoteric s?tra scriptures into a meditation manual that is easy to understand, scholars and practitioners rely on its authoritative presentation as a gateway that leads to a full understanding of the Buddha’s teachings. Tsong-kha-pa took great pains to base his insights on classical Indian Buddhist literature, illustrating his points with classical citations as well as with sayings of the masters of the earlier Kadampa tradition. In this way the text demonstrates clearly how Tibetan Buddhism carefully preserved and developed the Indian Buddhist traditions. This third and final volume contains a presentation of the two most important topics in the work: meditative serenity (?amatha) and supramundane insight into the nature of reality (vipa?yan?).

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche inspired Matthieu Ricard to create this anthology by telling him that "when we come to appreciate the depth of the view of the eight great traditions [of Tibetan Buddhism] and also see that they all lead to the same goal without contradicting each other, we think, ‘Only ignorance can lead us to adopt a sectarian view.’" Ricard has selected and translated some of the most profound and inspiring teachings from across these traditions. The selected teachings are taken from the sources of the traditions, including the Buddha himself, Nagarjuna, Guru Rinpoche, Atisha, Shantideva, and Asanga; from great masters of the past, including Thogme Zangpo, the Fifth Dalai Lama, Milarepa, Longchenpa, and Sakya Pandita; and from contemporary masters, including the Fourteenth Dalai Lama and Mingyur Rinpoche. They address such topics as the nature of the mind; the foundations of taking refuge, generating altruistic compassion, acquiring merit, and following a teacher; view, meditation, and action; and how to remove obstacles and make progress on the path.

On the Path to Enlightenment: A Hope for Humanity seeks to provide insight into the purpose of life. Author Chris Hamilton explains that it is the lessons we are learning in our everyday lives that define our life's purpose. These lessons give us hope to move forward into the light through love, releasing fear and judgment as we find peace and listen to our inner voice. We also realise that we do have help in our daily life through the guidance we are each given on a daily basis. We were born to experience life in all its many facets-to find love and to live that love. From personal tragedy in Chris's life comes a warm story of understanding our spiritual side through this guidance and ultimately finding peace and forgiveness. She has received what she believes to be divine guidance over a period of time, some of which was channelled to uplift her in times of sadness, doubt, or frustration. She feels it has been given, not for her alone, but for everyone. As our planet moves towards a higher dimension, we, mankind, must move forward with it if we are to remain on the earth in our physical forms. On the Path to Enlightenment seeks to help us make that move. "Profound and uplifting, this book by Chris Hamilton has grown from a long study of esoteric knowledge, channelled guidance, and personal tragedy." -Lawrence and Michael Sartorius, authors of The New Earth
