Objectless Relations

In an observational study of both clinical and non-clinical groups, individuals reporting experiences of obsessive love described: feelings of loss-of-control; powerlessness; acute feelings of rejection and shame; and a generalized sense of inner emptiness. A striking similarity was that, despite stated rejection by the object, there was an attitude of ambivalence toward the subject conveyed by mixed messages and alternating seductive/rejecting behaviors. Interviews revealed, as did patient self-reports, that the obsession is experienced as agonizing and seemingly interminable--the obsession may go on for months and years, often involving violent, self-destructive and/or suicidal ideation. the obsession resembles addiction in many ways. Using an object relations theoretical model to analyze the internal as well as external object relationships, the author notes a strong correlation between early object loss and later attachment difficulties. Studies indicate that the families-of-origin of such individuals have in common such features as: high incidence of alcoholism and depression on the maternal side of the family; neglect or explosiveness on the paternal side; and general marital distress. These individuals display depressive affect, addictive personality traits, and schizoid defenses (withdrawal from relationships which, in fantasy, protects the object from being annihilated or devoured). On a developmental continuum, this disorder is consistent with the oral incorporative phase, marked by overwhelming, unmet dependency needs and strong narcissistic features (undifferentiated self/object boundaries). the research suggests that there is a link between obsessive love and attachment disruption in the past year of life; these individuals have not successfully mastered tasks related to separation and individuation. the literature suggests that the experience of obsessive love may be regarded as an internalized transitional object (D. Winnicott). This author argues that the obsession is based upon morbid object relationships and, as such, cannot be considered transitional in a maturational sense, but may, with the help of psychoanalytic intervention, serve a transitional function. the author concludes that the obsession in obsessive love is dyadic, rather than monadic, by nature, and that dynamics of projective identification (M. Klein; T. Ogden) and extractive introjection (C. Bollas) play a significant role in unconscious communication between partners. Object relations treatment techniques are suggested.

We live in an age of obsession. Not only are we hopelessly devoted to our work, strangely addicted to our favorite television shows, and desperately impassioned about our cars, we admire obsession in others: we demand that lovers be infatuated with one another in films, we respond to the passion of single-minded musicians, we cheer on driven athletes. To be obsessive is to be American; to be obsessive is to be modern. But obsession is not only a phenomenon of modern existence: it is a medical category—both a pathology and a goal. Behind this paradox lies a fascinating history, which Lennard J. Davis tells in Obsession. Beginning with the roots of the disease in demonic possession and its secular successors, Davis traces the evolution of obsessive behavior from a social and religious fact of life into a medical and psychiatric problem. From obsessive aspects of professional specialization to obsessive compulsive disorder and nymphomania, no variety of obsession eludes Davis’s graceful analysis.

'Dear Thrumpton, how I miss you tonight,' wrote George Seymour in 1944, when he was aged twenty-one. But the object of his affection was not a young woman, but a house -- ownership of which was then a distant dream. But he did eventually acquire Thrumpton, a beautiful country house in Nottinghamshire, and it was in this idyllic home that Miranda Seymour grew up. But her upbringing was far from idyllic, as life revolved around her father's capriciousness. The House took priority, and everything -- everyone -- else was secondary. Until, that is, the day late on in his life when George Seymour took to riding powerful motorbikes around the countryside clad in black leather in the company of a young male friend. Had he taken leave of his senses? Or finally found them? And how did this sea-change affect his wife and daughter? Both biography and family memoir, IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE is a riveting and ultimately shocking portrait of desire both overt and suppressed, and the devastating consequences of misplaced love.

Alternatively, Control Mastery and Attachment theorists view the problem with separation as a disruption in one's normal developmental goals that has thwarted the attainment of an autonomous self and engendered maladaptive beliefs about autonomy. From this perspective, the individual is thought to desire autonomy as well as a healthy dependence on others.

Confronting Patriarchy: Psychoanalytic Theory in the Prose of Cristina Peri Rossi examines three works of the contemporary Uruguayan author who lives in exile as she dialogues with the psychoanalytic discourse endemic to patriarchal society. Peri Rossi's prose, structured like unconscious productions that give free expression to desire and passion as emanating from the forbidden recesses of the psyche, powerfully reveals the message as a treatment for an «ill» society. The language in the three works studied facilitates and reveals the male protagonist's interaction with the desired female object as a regression to a semiotic, pre-oedipal state in a type of «return of the repressed» of consuming desire that has been written out of mainstream patriarchy and that serves to challenge its rational, symbolic order. It is from this vantage point that the author attempts to re-write the conclusions obtained through Lacanian and patriarchal discourse so that woman can emerge as a subject in her own right.
