Over 100 years ago Roald Amundsen on March 7, 1912 announced his success in reaching the Geographic South Pole to the world. This is the story about the construction of the South Pole Station in Antarctica in 1973-4 by Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB71), also known as the ICE Battalion, which the author was a member of. The difficulties encountered in the construction of the station were monumental; enduring temperatures reaching 45 degrees below zero with wind chill factors reaching 80 below. This station was comprised of a 52 foot high geodesic dome, weather balloon launch station and an observation tower for monitoring auroral phenomena. This Battalion was on the ICE for almost five months and worked around the clock to complete the project. This was an amazing fact when you consider that most of the construction was completed in freezing temperatures at a high altitude; for the South Pole is nearly two miles high by construction engineers less than 20 years old. The physical and mental stresses of working in this "frozen desert" took its tolls on these young men. This story chronicles the authors experience in this hostile environment, with bawdy engineers; humorous antics; hard drinking and temporary insanities and the authors faith journey amid the beautify and grandeur of the earth's last frontier: Antarctica. The title of the book is also the motto of the ICE Battalion-it refers to our mission and our R&R (rest and recreation) in Christchurch, New Zealand. "THE ICE IS NICE AND CHEE-CHEE IS PEACHY"

"One of the best books yet published on climate change . . . The best compact history of the science of global warming I have read."—Bill McKibben, The New York Review of Books The world's premier climatologist, Lonnie Thompson has been risking his career and life on the highest and most remote ice caps along the equator, in search of clues to the history of climate change. His most innovative work has taken place on these mountain glaciers, where he collects ice cores that provide detailed information about climate history, reaching back 750,000 years. To gather significant data Thompson has spent more time in the death zone—the environment above eighteen thousand feet—than any man who has ever lived. Scientist and expert climber Mark Bowen joined Thompson's crew on several expeditions; his exciting and brilliantly detailed narrative takes the reader deep inside retreating glaciers from China, across South America, and to Africa to unravel the mysteries of climate. Most important, we learn what Thompson's hard-won data reveals about global warming, the past, and the earth's probable future.

Ice Flotilla is a story about ordinary people caught up in the extraordinary horrors and challenges of World War Two. In the midst of this terrible conflict, human beings were also faced with many of life's seemingly mundane choices too. How they handled the pressures of war, the loss of loved ones, and still managed to discover their dignity during those tumultuous times, is what this book is all about. With a world at war, love still made a difference in so many ways. Once again Iceland was a major locale for one of Derek Hart's novels. Intrigued by the culture, the people, the landscape, and the history, the author felt motivated to write another book expounding the virtues and complexities of this fascinating nation. Follow the life and death struggle of Richard Hathaway and his son Ian during the dark days of World War Two.

Sample A few days later Barbie told him the details about his meeting with the man for the passport. He was to go to a café, order a whisky and wait for a woman who would ask him for a light. He was to say, “I love you,” and she would reply, “I love you too.” He had to be there between eleven and twelve. He was to go alone. The ‘going alone’ bit worried him, especially as the bar was in an unfamiliar part of town but Barbie reassured him so he went. He and the woman exchanged pass phrases and she told him to go to another bar a few blocks away, ask for an orange juice, and wait for a man. The man would say, “Aphrodisiac,” and he should say, “Only for monkeys.” He was amused by all this secrecy but understood its need and soon found himself talking to a neatly dressed business man with a suitcase, scarf and a silky-smooth voice. “Hello. So what can I do for you?” He explained, and the man asked for the photograph which Barbie had told him to bring and half the money, 1300 Guilders, which he had also brought. Dave watched possessively when the money disappeared into the man’s pocket. “Okay. This is no joke. Do you understand?” “Yes.” “Okay. The passport will be ready in two weeks’ time. You will have der rest of the money then?” “No. Three weeks will be okay though.” “Okay. Barbie will tell you where to go.” “Thanks.” “No problem. Order another drink, a pint, and drink it all slowly, before you leave.” He got up and left. Dave ordered the drink, drank it and went home nervous and apprehensive. “How did it go,” asked Barbie, curiously. “Oh okay. Thanks Barbie.” “That’s okay.” She made no further effort to talk to him, but smiled sweetly. The next two weeks were painful. The girls only spoke to him when necessary and it was quite clear that they had closed ranks against him. He was deeply angry at the injustice of it but also felt something like hatred for Barbie. He suspected she was to blame although he didn’t show it. He was starting to think about moving on. He hadn’t intended to, at least for the last couple of months. “I never intended to stay anyway,” he told himself. Dave made several attempts to establish himself independently of the girls and even to prove his worth to them and to himself. He went to see another film, ‘Showgirls’, with the intention of chatting up the blonde girl who he guessed worked at the ticket office. Dave smiled at her, and said, “Hi,” when he bought the ticket. He waited outside afterwards, sipping a plastic cup of coffee, waiting for her to have a break. He had no idea if she’d remember him or not from the previous visits, but it seemed that she did. He knew that the film wasn’t a romantic one, and it would hardly look good. But since he hadn’t known if she’d be there he flattered himself that he thought it was more important to enjoy himself than to chat her up. He was lucky, and after his second coffee she came out for a fag. She smiled, and he smiled back. She said something in Dutch, which he didn’t understand. “I’m English,” he replied. “Ah. I asked if you were vating for someone.” “No,” he said. He wondered if he should add, ‘Only you’, but felt it was too obvious. “Just enjoying being out in the sun,” he added. “Yes. Summer is here.” Her long, blonde hair was blowing in the gentle breeze and as he looked at her face, thinking how pretty she was, she looked directly at him. He could see from her eyes that she was already on the defensive. He felt that his lifeline to a life of any substance had become a single thread and that to anyone looking he must have looked like a puppet on a very thin string. Perhaps his desperation showed through. Like a climber lunging desperately for something to grab hold of, he asked, “Are you from Amsterdam?” “No,” she laughed. “I am from Nurway.” “Ah. It’s beautiful there.” “Yes it is. Very.” Now he’d got her going, she was very happy to talk about her home, and he was happy to at least have a conversation. “Well. I must go back in now,” she said, stamping her butt into the ground. “Bye bye!” “Yes. Bye,” he said, looking into the distance. Yes. Scandinavia sounded attractive to him. He was reminded of a conversation in the bar a couple of months before with a German man who had just arrived after one year in Sweden and had liked it there. “Clean,” he’d said. “And the women.” He whistled. As the sound of the country effervesced inside him, Dave started seeing himself walking in clean, green fields with a beautiful Swedish girl beside him. *** Now Dave was in a crowded bar, not far from his original meeting place with the man about the passport. The silky-voiced man beckoned him to the toilet. In a cubicle, behind a closed door, the man took the rest of his money and handed Dave a manila envelope stiff from its contents. “Look at it then?” the man prompted Dave, who was just staring at the envelope. Dave looked closely at the fake documents, before handing over the rest of the money. They looked very authentic and it felt good to have some sort of I.D. again. He replaced the document in the envelope. “Don’t open it again until you are well away from here,” the man whispered. “Have one more drink and then leave.” On the way back, Dave had the strange urge to walk around the red-light district for a while. He felt more in-control of his life with the passport pressing against his thigh and wanted to enjoy the moment. He looked at the front of a sex shop and the girls in their glass cages. He was looking for something, but quickly realized he wouldn’t find it here. He wandered away from the tinsel-brightness of the clubs and brothels, back towards Mojo’s.

First contact with extraordinary aliens, glittering technologies that could destroy the universe in a nanosecond, huge sweeping space operas: Alastair Reynolds is back! Some centuries from now, the exploration and exploitation of the Solar System is in full swing. On the cold edge of the system, Bella Lind, captain of the huge commercial spacecraft Rockhopper IV, helps fuel this new gold rush by attaching mass-driver motors to organic-rich water-ice comets to move them back to the inner worlds. Her crew are tough, blue-collar miners, engineers and demolition experts. Around Saturn, something inexplicable happens: one of the moons leaves its orbit and accelerates out of the Solar System. The icy mantle peels away to reveal that it was never a moon in the first place, just a parked spacecraft, millions of years old, that has now decided to move on. Rockhopper IV, trapped in the pull, is hurled across time and space into the deep, distant future, arriving in a vast, alien-constructed chamber. And the crew are not alone, for each chamber contains an alien culture dragged into this cosmic menagerie at the end of time. The crew of the Rockhopper IV know a lot about blowing up comets, but not much about first contact with ultra-advanced aliens. They have two things to worry about: can they (and their new alien allies) negotiate their way through each harrying contact? And can they assimilate the avalanche of knowledge about their own future - including all the glittering, dangerous technologies that are now theirs for the taking - without destroying themselves in the process?
