"The result of a wide-ranging IRPP research program, this multidisciplinary volume explores the following themes: Canada in the circumpolar world - environmental, scientific and foreign-policy dimensions; First Nations, Inuit and public governance; economic development - enterprise, sustainable development and communities; sustaining people - education and human capital; and developing a northern policy for the future. Public policy specialists review the implications of the unprecedented changes in governance that have taken place in the three territories and in Aboriginal communities in northern Quebec and Labrador over the past three decades and analyze challenges that must be faced in order to strengthen economic development and quality of life for northern residents. Contributions from Inuit and First Nations leaders, former territorial premiers, and Aboriginal youth activists add further depth and perspective."--Pub. desc.

All roads lead home when that's where you've left your heart. Compass Brothers, Book 1 Silas Compton always had his eye on Lucy, the veterinarian's daughter. He was even content to wait for the girl of his dreams to grow up before getting anywhere near her with his family's double-edged legacy. Waiting around led to fooling around with his best friend-and an impulsive eruption of desire that Lucy's innocent eyes weren't meant to see. Figuring Compton Pass wasn't big enough for either the three of them or the pain he'd caused, Silas let loose his tightly reined wanderlust and headed for Alaska. Ten years later, when an oil rig accident sends him home, he braces himself for the reopening of old wounds. Instead he finds himself in the care-and welcoming arms-of Lucy and Colby, whose marriage has plenty of room for the man they both still love. And forgive with all their hearts. As things start to unravel at Compass Ranch, Silas must dig deep for the strength to assume his rightful place in the Compton family...and lay the foundation for a future with his lovers. If he can forgive himself. Warning: This book is overflowing with sexy cowboys who like to saddle up and ride each other as well as the woman of their dreams. The likelihood of becoming addicted to their ranch family is high. With three more stories yet to come, beware. You won't be able to read just one!

Northern Exposure was an award-winning television show that was broadcast in the early 1990s. While it was largely comedic, it dealt with a variety of fundamental philosophical issues and themes, such as the nature of the self, the arts, ethics, and others. This book is a showcase of many of the philosophical matters that were raised and explored--albeit always in a humorous and heart-felt way--in the episodes and characters of the show. It is a celebration of a wonderfully quirky and intelligent series.

OF INTEREST TO: fans of humorous fiction In polar travel the last ten miles are invariably the hardest. One is spent and exhausted. Ice conditions north of eighty-seven are increasingly difficult. Absolutely nothing has been done by either Canadian or United States Governments toward keeping the national highways in condition. Raftered floes, composed of sheets of twenty-foot ice, piled up like badly shuffled playing cards, often directly oppose one's progress. MY NORTHERN EXPOSURE: The only highway comparable to the above, in my experience, is the main street of Portchester, N.Y., which has been torn up since the memory of man. Some of the rocks in the middle of this thoroughfare are of volcanic origin. The detours are even worse. -from Chapter V In the 1920s, inspired by the fad for works of real-life adventure and the dry wit of the Algonquin Roundtable, New York architect GEORGE SHEPARD CHAPPELL (1877-1946), egged on by his friend George Putnam of the publishing house GP Putnam's Sons, wrote a series of satirical books about the explorations of the entirely invented Dr. Walter E. Traprock, captain of the yacht Kawa, and his journeys around the world. This, the second spoof in the series, was published in 1922, and details the over-the-top bravery of Traprock and his crew as they encounter dangerous polar ice and ridiculously noble natives. The many accompanying photographs of the expedition are clearly faked, and quite hilarious. The deadpan attitude and ironic pretense of Chappell's writing is as fresh and funny today, in the era of The Onion and Jon Stewart, as it was almost a century ago.

This intimate portrait of eight houses by the Maine architect Carol A. Wilson illustrates how "local" is an idea as close to architecture as it is to food. Focusing on climate, seasons, views, local materials, the ecological history of building sites, and collaborations with local artisans, Wilson crafts exquisitely designed and built houses that celebrate the beauty of New England and the power of architecture to combine modern forms with a traditional built landscape. Following introductory texts by Enrico Pinna and Juhani Pallasmaa, and a conversation between Wilson and John Leroux, each project opens with a foldout of plans—transitioning from hand-drawn to computer-aided—and information about the house, before culminating in brilliant exterior, interior, and detail photographs. The book closes with an interview in twenty questions that elaborates on Wilson's working principles and the history of her studio for the past thirty years.

The Complete Book Of Ferns

The Complete Book of Ferns is filled with botanical information, indoor and outdoor growing and care information, details on propagation, display ideas, and even craft projects. This gorgeous book is authored by Mobee Weinstein, the Foreman of Gardeners at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx and a veteran guest on the Martha Stewart Living TV show and other media outlets. Houseplants in general are in ascendance, but no category is hotter than ferns. From the otherworldly Staghorns—mounted like antler trophies in homes throughout the world—to the classic Boston Ferns and newer varieties like Crispy Wave, ferns are definitely back in fashion. And to no one’s surprise. After all, ferns are among the very oldest plants on the planet, with a long and storied history. There are tens of thousands of known varieties of ferns. In the Victorian Era, ferns created an absolute craze for more than 50 years. They re-emerged as integral home décor accessories in the '50s and '60s, and who didn’t spend time in a "Fern Bar" back in the '80s? And they are back again. This comprehensive reference starts its examination of ferns 400 million years ago, when the first species of this group of spore-reproducing plants appeared on Earth, exploring their evolution and eventual incorporation into human culture, including the powers associated with them and their practical and ornamental uses. Then, after an exploration of fern botany—its parts, how it grows, its variability in size and form, habitats, propagation, etc.—you'll learn how to green your indoor and outdoor environments with ferns. Every aspect of fern care is covered: potting/planting, watering, fertilizing, pest and disease control, and more. With this knowledge absorbed, explore creative planting projects, like terrariums, vertical gardens (living walls), mixed tabletop gardens, and moss baskets. To make your survey of ferns complete, create pressed fern art, fabric wall hangings with chlorophyll-stained designs, cyanotypes, and hand-made fern-decorated paper. In the end, you will understand why this ancient plant class continues to be all the rage.

A compelling and innovative television writer, David Chase has created distinctive programs since the 1970s, each reflecting his edgy humor and psychological realism. These critical essays examine Chase’s television writings, placing particular emphasis on how his past works have shaped and influenced the cultural phenomenon of HBO’s The Sopranos, and studying Chase’s use of identity, community, and place in defining his on-screen characters. Topics explored include Chase’s constructs of the urban L.A. environment in The Rockford Files, the portrayal of hybridized American archetypes in Northern Exposure, and the interpretation of sexual identity/masculinity in The Sopranos. An appendix containing complete episode guides for The Rockford Files, Northern Exposure, and The Sopranos is also included.
