Rod Lyon, former Grand Bard of the Gorseth Kernow, recollects his early days fishing out of Newquay, "in the days before modern electronic aids, man-made fibre ropes, twines and cords, plastic 'skins' and floats instead of cork ...when navigation to and from the gear was by dead reckoning, using only a watch and a compass, with only experience telling you what to allow for with the tide." Rod illustrates, in both words and pictures, the techniques and the equipment used in those bygone days, and along the way remembers some of the more notable characters, both Cornish and Breton, who frequented 'Down Quay'. The book also includes a gazetteer of his favourite fishing grounds.

The Cornish Lands Of The Arundells Of Lanherne Fourteenth To Sixteenth Centuries

Author : H. S. A. Fox
ISBN : UOM:39015047716074
Genre : Arundell of Cornwall Family
File Size : 56.38 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle

The Arundell family of Lanherne, near Newquay, was one of the richest and most important in Cornwall in the late Middle Ages, having extensive property in most parts of the county as well as elsewhere (notably Devon and Dorset). Cornwall Record Office has recently acquired the family archive, and this provides the opportunity for publishing some of its rich contents. As a first offering, this volume contains rentals and surveys of the Arundell lands in Cornwall from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries. These documents list the lands and tenants of each property belonging to the family, often in considerable detail. The earliest survey is dated 1343, just before the Black Death, and covers some of the Arundell lands in the area of St Columb Major, Newquay and Padstow. The earliest full survey is for 1451-63 and includes those properties and others in the areas of the Lizard, Penwith, St Austell, Bodmin and the Clay Country. Even then the family lands were still growing, and in the sixteenth century are added further properties in South Cornwall (including one near Looe) and elsewhere; these appear in the later documents published here. These rentals and surveys provide much information about Cornish history in general and in particular for local and family historians in Cornwall, for those interested in social and agricultural history, manorial history, place-names and personal names. There is an introduction covering some of the topics illustrated by the surveys, and helping to make the material accessible to non-specialists.

The guidebook is divided into sections, including walks on Bodmin Moor (for which good navigational skills are required), the North coast, Penwith and West Cornwall, the Inland Mining Districts, Land's End and the Lizard and Roseland Peninsulas. Cornwall has a lot to offer walkers; stunning coastal scenery and long stretches of wild moorland, with quiet estuaries cutting through high and rocky headlands. Birdlife and wildlife, from choughs to falcons to seals are found throughout the county, as are historical sites from the neolithic, to Iron Age hill forts and a long history of mining. The towns and villages of Cornwall, from the popular spots such as St Ives, Newquay and Padstow, to quiet inland hamlets and tucked away fishing villages are also included and provide perfect bases for going out to explore the country. Alongside the 40 walking routes, this guidebook also includes plenty of practical information on getting to and around Cornwall, as well as details on each walk's distance, timing, terrain, ascent and nearest town. Throughout the walk descriptions, there are details of places of interest along the way, as well as annotated OS maps and stunning photography.
