A preeminent geneticist hunts the Neanderthal and Denisovan genomes to answer the biggest question of them all: how did our ancestors become human? Neanderthal Man tells the riveting personal and scientific story of the quest to use ancient DNA to unlock the secrets of human evolution. Beginning with the study of DNA in Egyptian mummies in the early 1980s and culminating in the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome in 2010, Neanderthal Man describes the events, intrigues, failures, and triumphs of these scientifically rich years through the lens of the pioneer and inventor of the field of ancient DNA. We learn that Neanderthal genes offer a unique window into the lives of our ancient relatives and may hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of where language came from as well as why humans survived while Neanderthals went extinct. Pääbo redrew our family tree and permanently changed the way we think about who we are and how we got here. For readers of Richard Dawkins, David Reich, and Hope Jahren, Neanderthal Man is the must-read account of how he did it.

This offering is Volume One in Joe Slade’s Mushroom Village series. Enjoy following Dan Miller on his first official murder mystery as The Mushroom Village’s only detective. Explored in this tale are questions of law in a lawless world with a backdrop of a village that is both open and set in its ways. The village, for those who don’t already know, is set in a Michigan county which was given up on after a mega tornado tore it apart and was subsequently bought by private citizens. This mystery gives us a glimpse into how folks who come to a sacred place feel, and how the folks who live there feel about the visitors. Of course, the Evil Magician makes his presence known, as he is the president of the co-op. This mystery is maybe mostly about getting to know the funkiness of the village in the summer time. As Dan’s family gets involved in the case the reader is shown a typical day in the life of village teenagers.

When Samuel Wyndham, the director of the prestigious Wyndham Institute of Art and Culture, was found with his head nearly severed by a Minoan ax, the obvious suspect was his protégé and future son-in-law Nicholas d’Abernon. But as Nick’s trial proceeds, it becomes clear that everyone who works for Wyndham has strong motives for murder. As witnesses take the stand, the international dimensions and politi cal implications of the murder are exposed. Accusations of theft , forgery, blackmail, and drug trafficking lend support to Samuel Wyndhams’s pet theory that the Neanderthal nature, buried deep in the past of human beings, is a key factor in his grisly murder.

Although the name Pithecanthropus is now seldom used, there are few who study the origin of our species who will fail to recognise the historical place of the usage and its association with Eugene Dubois. During the last thirty or forty years, Australopithecus and its African context has tended to draw attention from the early work on our origins in Java. It is now increasingly common to hear the term 'pithecanthropine' used only to indicate the Asian or Far Eastern examples of Homo erectus which, although probably derived from African ancestry, have some features that in the opinion of some experts may justify their being considered distinctive. This discussion is not within the pages that follow which deal extensively with the work of Eugene Dubois. He was an extraordinary man who did as much as any person since to put the great antiquity of our ancestors firmly in the public domain. Dubois became involved with the study of human origins from a medical and anatomical background as have many since. The jealousies and professional pressures that we think of as a phenomenon of the post-war years were clearly a major factor in deciding the future of his career.
