NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Gloria Steinem—writer, activist, organizer, and inspiring leader—tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of her life as a traveler, a listener, and a catalyst for change. ONE OF O: THE OPRAH MAGAZINE’S TEN FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR | NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Harper’s Bazaar • St. Louis Post-Dispatch • Publishers Weekly When people ask me why I still have hope and energy after all these years, I always say: Because I travel. Taking to the road—by which I mean letting the road take you—changed who I thought I was. The road is messy in the way that real life is messy. It leads us out of denial and into reality, out of theory and into practice, out of caution and into action, out of statistics and into stories—in short, out of our heads and into our hearts. Gloria Steinem had an itinerant childhood. When she was a young girl, her father would pack the family in the car every fall and drive across country searching for adventure and trying to make a living. The seeds were planted: Gloria realized that growing up didn’t have to mean settling down. And so began a lifetime of travel, of activism and leadership, of listening to people whose voices and ideas would inspire change and revolution. My Life on the Road is the moving, funny, and profound story of Gloria’s growth and also the growth of a revolutionary movement for equality—and the story of how surprising encounters on the road shaped both. From her first experience of social activism among women in India to her work as a journalist in the 1960s; from the whirlwind of political campaigns to the founding of Ms. magazine; from the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference to her travels through Indian Country—a lifetime spent on the road allowed Gloria to listen and connect deeply with people, to understand that context is everything, and to become part of a movement that would change the world. In prose that is revealing and rich, Gloria reminds us that living in an open, observant, and “on the road” state of mind can make a difference in how we learn, what we do, and how we understand each other. Praise for My Life on the Road “This legendary feminist makes a compelling case for traveling as listening: a way of letting strangers’ stories flow, as she puts it, ‘out of our heads and into our hearts.’”—People “Like Steinem herself, [My Life on the Road] is thoughtful and astonishingly humble. It is also filled with a sense of the momentous while offering deeply personal insights into what shaped her.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “A lyrical meditation on restlessness and the quest for equity . . . Part of the appeal of My Life is how Steinem, with evocative, melodic prose, conveys the air of discovery and wonder she felt during so many of her journeys. . . . The lessons imparted in Life on the Road offer more than a reminiscence. They are a beacon of hope for the future.”—USA Today “A warmly companionable look back at nearly five decades as itinerant feminist organizer and standard-bearer. If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to sit down with Ms. Steinem for a casual dinner, this disarmingly intimate book gives a pretty good idea, mixing hard-won pragmatic lessons with more inspirational insights.”—The New York Times “Steinem rocks. My Life on the Road abounds with fresh insights and is as populist as can be.”—The Boston Globe

The untold story of life on the road with the Grateful Dead, written by an insider who lived it from the early days to today. Steve Parish was never one to walk the straight-and-narrow, even during his childhood growing up in Flushing Meadow, Queens. Busted as a teenager for selling acid in the summer of 1968, Parish landed in Riker's Island. The experience changed him and after getting out he did his best to stay out of trouble, securing a job moving music equipment at the New York State Pavilion. The first show he worked was a Grateful Dead concert in July of 1969 and Parish was captivated by the music. A life seemingly headed nowhere had suddenly found its calling as he fell in quickly with a band of likeminded misfits who formed the nucleus of what would be the greatest road crew in rock 'n' roll history. Parish traveled to California where his apprenticeship began. Working for the band for free and learning his craft, Parish got to know Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Billy and Mickey and through the years their relationships forged an unbreakable bond. He became very close with Garcia in particular, acting as his personal roadie and later manager for his solo performances and Garcia Band shows. He was there during times of trouble (like when a pimp held Garcia hostage at gunpoint in a New York hotel room), spending hours by his bedside when Garcia was in a coma in 1986, and performing the duties of best man at his wedding. He was also the last friend to see Garcia alive. Throughout the Dead's historic run, there were parties of biblical proportion and celebrity run-ins with everybody from Bob Dylan to Frank Sinatra--but there was a dark side to life on the road and tragedy didn't just strike the musicians. But Home Before Daylight is a story of friendship, of music and redemption. It is a piece of music history, one that reflects the American spirit of adventure and brotherhood. Seen through Steve Parish's eyes and experiences, The Grateful Dead's wild ride has never been so revealing.

In this, his first book, he reveals what life is like behind the scenes at the pinnacle of rock 'n' roll touring. As Coldplay move from club gigs to arenas and stadiums worldwide, Matt goes with them; faking it as a band member on US chat shows, flirting with Kylie, saving a life on a French motorway and even pitching in with the odd guitar riff in the studio. Roadie provides the definitive glimpse of backstage life. Sylvie Fleury (b. Geneva, 1961; lives and works in Geneva) makes art in which references to the realms of luxury and commodities serve to dismantle the hierarchical distinctions between art, culture, design, fashion, and commerce. She got her start in the art world almost by chance when, in 1990, the artist John Armleder hired her as his assistant, and since then she has presented objects of desire from the domains of fashion and cosmetics as sculptures and installations. Arrangements on the floor of the exhibition space feature shopping bags emblazoned with the emblems of popular fashion houses as well as shattered makeup boxes. Status symbols and fetishes from the realm of consumer goods are displaced into the art context to call their value in question. As in Duchamp, the artist's objects are readymades, quoting Andy Warhol's approach to a critique of mass manufacturing. Neon signs proclaim the power of the brand and exalt the logo as the icon of global consumerism. Tracing the fine line between seduction and superficiality, art and advertising, conception and consumption, Fleury's works may appear to embrace the values and standards of the consumerist society; look more closely, though, and they articulate a subtle critique of the semblance of beauty. With texts by Verna Hein and Maria Muhle, a conversation between Sylvie Fleury, Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen as well as a preface by Michael Buhrs and Verena Hein.

If someone said to you, 'Imagine a tour manager for a rock band,' what would you think? Now take that thought and turn it completely on its head. That's Kim.In this, my first book, Confessions of a Female Tour Manager, I tell the story of my life on the road with some of the most notorious bands in rock 'n' roll history, including Chumbawamba, Hawkwind, Black Sabbath - and for the ten craziest years of my life, Motörhead.Mine is the story of a woman in a man's world. I had no interest in being one of the boys, let alone proving it. I wore designer shoes instead of steel toe-caps, freshly-painted nail varnish instead of tattoos and carried a Tiffany pen instead of an Allen key in my pocket. In thirty years, I never ran, never shouted, never gave in and never gave up. This is a memoir with a triple-A pass - filled with egos and escapades, divas and decadence, substance abuse and sex; tales of music and madness, of scotching stereotypes, of not giving a damn and deciding what really matters - all to a soundtrack playing at 11.
