The Allgemeines Ku nstlerlexikon (AKL) is the most extensive, up-to-date and authoritative art-history reference work on artists. It is by no means limited to only the most famous artists: artists all over the globe and throughout the ages from antiquity to the present are recorded in this major encyclopedia. And it contains not only painters, sculptors, and architects, but gives equal weighting to sculptors in marble, restorers, and calligraphers, or craftsmen, to name but a few of the many hundreds of artistic professions found in the AKL.

One of the activities of the Ettore Majorana Centre for ,Scientific Culture is the international advanced study courses on scientific topics which are of particular relevance today. The Centre is located in Erice, a mountain town in the province of Trapani in Sicily. At present over seventy Schools of the Centre are active, holding annual or biennial courses, so that about forty courses are organized each year. To date some twenty thou sand participants have attended the courses of the various Schools of the Centre. The International Physics Workshop Series has been established to make the contents of the Workshops o'f great topical interest available to those who were unable to attend them. The courses are conducted on an advanced, post-doctoral level. This volume - the proceedings of the session on "Quarks and Hadronic Structure" - is the first of the Series. In September 1975, thirty-three physicists from twenty-one laboratories in nine countries met in Erice to attend the Workshop. The countries represented were: Austria, France, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The purpose of this Workshop was to bring to gether a group of theorists working on various aspects of the quark structure of hadrons to discuss and critically evaluate the present situation. Professor Morpurgo was given the direction of the Workshop. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him most warmly for having accepted this responsibility and for the success of the Work shop.

High technology industries are in desperate need for adequate tools to assess the validity of simulations produced by ever faster computers for perennial unstable problems. In order to meet these industrial expectations, applied mathematicians are facing a formidable challenge summarized by these words — nonlinearity and coupling. This book is unique as it proposes truly original solutions: (1) Using hypercomputation in quadratic algebras, as opposed to the traditional use of linear vector spaces in the 20th century; (2) complementing the classical linear logic by the complex logic which expresses the creative potential of the complex plane. The book illustrates how qualitative computing has been the driving force behind the evolution of mathematics since Pythagoras presented the first incompleteness result about the irrationality of √2. The celebrated results of Gödel and Turing are but modern versions of the same idea: the classical logic of Aristotle is too limited to capture the dynamics of nonlinear computation. Mathematics provides us with the missing tool, the organic logic, which is aptly tailored to model the dynamics of nonlinearity. This logic will be the core of the “Mathematics for Life” to be developed during this century.

The 9th Jerusalem Symposium was dedicated to the memory of Professor Ernst David Bergmann. An imposing and deeply moving memorial session, chaired by Professor Ephraim Katzir, the President of the State of Is rael and a close friend of Professor Bergmann preceded the Symposium itself. During this session, Professor Bergmann's personality, scien tific achievements and contributions to the development of his country were described and praised, besides President Katzir, by Professor A. Dvoretzky, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Professor D. Ginsburg, Dean of the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa and the author of these lines. May I just quote short extracts from these speeches. President Katzir: "As we open this ninth in the series of symposia initiated in 1967, it is difficult for me as, I am sure, for many of Ernst Bergmann's friends, co-workers and students, to be here without him. He was not only a great scientist and a beloved teacher, he was one of the most important founders of science in this country. To him we owe many institutes and the establishment here of many branches of science. " Professor Dvoretzky: "Ernst Bergmann's greatness did not stem from one component overshadowing all the others. It was a multifaceted great ness consisting of the harmonious co~lescing of seemingly contrasting entities into a wonderful unity ••.
