Islam has been the fastest growing religion in the world for many years, and was founded by the prophet Mohammed, who lived from about C.E. 570-632. The author wrote this book to serve as a bridge between the Islamic and Christian worlds. Some scholars claim that Islam and Christianity are on a collision course, with no chance for harmony due to immense cultural differences. This book proclaims the exact oppositethat common threads between these worlds are so strong that we can appreciate our differences. States that Jesus and Mohammed belong next to each other, as opposed to one (no matter which one) being above the other. If equal recognition could occur then mutual respect would result. This book can contribute important ideas of harmony and respect between faiths.

Askia Mohammed is the most famous leader in the history of the Songhay Empire, which reached its apogee during his reign in 1493-1528. Songhay, approximately halfway between the present-day cities of Timbuktu in Mali and Niamey in Niger, became a political force beginning in 1463, under the leadership of Sonni Ali Ber. By the time of his death in 1492, the foundation had been laid for the development under Askia Mohammed of a complex system of administration, a well-equipped army and navy, and a network of large government-owned farms. The present rendition of the epic was narrated by the griot (or jeseré) Nouhou Malio over two evenings in Saga, a small town on the Niger River, two miles downstream from Niamey. The text is a word-for-word translation from Nouhou Malio's oral performance.

This classic biography is not a religious text designed to either celebrate or denigrate Islam. It looks at Mohammed as a towering figure of culture and politics, a man who achieved the extraordinary: uniting disparate Arab tribes into a more cohesive whole. This book remains an important work for anyone wishing to understand the roots of one of the most intractable sociopolitical divides-between East and West, Muslim and Christian-still haunting the world today. Author David S. Margoliouth (1858-1940), a professor of Arabic at Oxford University, worked from primary Arabic texts and omitted "all anecdotes that are obviously or most probably fabulous," resulting in a clear-headed history of a highly contentious moment in time.

We now pick up our story by returning to the Bible and the book of Genesis. 16:3 and Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 16:11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and thou shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. 16:12 and he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand will be against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. It should be noted at this point that Ishmael was the firstborn son of Abraham. Borne to him by his WIFE Hagar. This is a very important fact which is usually overlooked in the reading of the Bible. We will now advance 13 years to the circumstances of the more noted second son. Again in Genesis we read; 17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her .
