From the reviews: "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969 and it has already become one of the fundamental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and neighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. ...The abstracts are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world." Space Science Reviews#1 "Dividing the whole field plus related subjects into 108 categories, each work is numbered and most are accompanied by brief abstracts. Fairly comprehensive cross-referencing links relevant papers to more than one category, and exhaustive author and subject indices are to be found at the back, making the catalogues easy to use. The series appears to be so complete in its coverage and always less than a year out of date that I shall certainly have to make a little more space on those shelves for future volumes." Space Radio Science deals with the theory and practice of space communications with Earth's satellites and interplanetary probes, interstellar radio communications in our galaxy, and the effects of gravitational fields on propagating radio waves. The text describes a method of radio occultation used to monitor planetary atmosphere and ionosphere. The author considers remote sensing of circumsolar and interplanetary plasmas, as well as of the Earth and other planets in the solar system. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of radiophysical problems and methods, as well as the benefits of various spacecraft and radio signals. It looks at problems such as gravitational pull and its effect on the propagation of radio waves. This monograph is ideal for radio-physicists, engineers and students in space radiophysics, remote sensing, propagation of radio waves and space communications.

The European Yearbook has expanded over the years in keeping with the role played by European institutions compared with national ones. It is an indispensable work of reference for anyone dealing with these institutions, which have become so numerous & varied that no-one can possibly memorise all their acronyms or functions. The European Yearbook provides aids for finding one's way through the labyrinth of these organisations which coordinate a variety of activities in over 20 countries. One of the aids is an 'organisation chart' at the beginning of the documentary section, giving a clear picture of the general situation. A perusal of the many contributions in the volume organisation by organisation, shows the full diversity of the activities which Europe is gradually taking over from national governments, with their consent & financial support. Written in both of the Council of Europe's official languages, English & French, the European Yearbook also contains a general index by subject & name which constitutes a very valuable list of articles & provides direct access to the work's subject matter, regardless of the particular organisation concerned, offering a kind of cross-section of the activities of European organisations.

The participation of such diverse scientific and technical disciplines as meteorology, astronomy, atmospheric electricity, ionospheric and magnetospheric physics, electromagnetic wave propagation, and radio techniques in the research of atmospherics means that results are published in scientific papers widely spread throughout the literature. This Handbook collects the latest knowledge on atmospherics and presents it in two volumes. Each chapter is written by an expert in his or her field. Topics include the physics of thunderclouds, thunder, global atmospheric electric currents, biological aspects of sferics, and various space techniques for detecting lightning within our own atmosphere as well as in the atmospheres of other planets. Up-to-date applications and methodology are detailed. Volumes I and II offer a comprehensive discussion that together will serve as an important resource for practitioners, professionals, and students alike.

In 1896 A. Sommerfeld published his famous paper «Zur Theorie der Diffraktion» in vol. 47 of the «Mathematische Annalen». His investigations initiated the study of boundary value problems in scattering theory. A long series of research works on general mixed boundary value problems sprang up then. Boundary integral equations together with the Wiener-Hopf method have been generalized and are now a basis for analytical and numerical studies by many mathematicians and engineers working on wave diffraction problems. Commemorating the centenary of Sommerfeld's paper, the aim of this conference is to join the experts and young researchers to present surveys and new results.

Spreading Germs

Author : Michael Worboys
ISBN : 0521773024
Genre : Medical
File Size : 83.40 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle

Spreading Germs discusses how modern ideas on the bacterial causes of communicable diseases were constructed and spread within the British medical profession in the last third of the nineteenth century. Michael Worboys surveys many existing interpretations of this pivotal moment in modern medicine. He shows that there were many germ theories of disease, and that these were developed and used in different ways across veterinary medicine, surgery, public health and general medicine. The growth of bacteriology is considered in relation to the evolution of medical practice rather than as a separate science of germs.
