Mechanics of Functionally Graded Material Structures is an authoritative and fresh look at various functionally graded materials, customizing them with various structures. The book is devoted to tailoring material properties to the needed structural performance. The authors pair materials with the appropriate structures based upon their purpose and use. Material grading of structures depending upon thickness, axial and polar directions are discussed. Three dimensional analysis of rectangular plates made of functional graded materials and vibrational tailoring of inhomogeneous beams and circular plates are both covered in great detail. The authors derive novel closed form solutions that can serve as benchmarks that numerical solutions can be compared to. These are published for the first time in the literature. This is a unique book that gives the first exposition of the effects of various grading mechanisms on the structural behavior as well as taking into account vibrations and buckling. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) were initially designed as thermal barrier materials for aerospace structures and fusion reactors and now they are also considered as potential structural materials for future high-speed spacecraft and recently are being increasingly considered in various applications to maximize strengths and integrities of many engineering structures. This book is a result of contributions of experts from international scientific community working in different aspects of FGMs and structures and reports on the state of the art research and development findings on this topic through original and innovative research studies. Through its six chapters the reader will have access to works related to processing, sintering properties and applications of functionally graded ceramics and new processing routes for FGMs while it introduces some specific applications, such as functionally graded annular fins and the high-performance self-lubricating ceramic composites with laminated graded structure. Besides, it presents an experimental crack propagation analysis of aluminum matrix FGMs and a unified accurate solution for three-dimensional vibration analysis of functionally graded plates and cylindrical shells with general boundary conditions.

Put a New Class of Structural Composites to Use Real Solutions for Predicting Load Initially designed as thermal barrier materials for aerospace applications and fusion reactors, functionally graded materials (FGMs) are now widely employed as structural components in extremely high-temperature environments. However, little information is commonly available that would allow engineers to predict the response of FGM plates and shells subjected to thermal and mechanical loads. Functionally Graded Materials: Nonlinear Analysis of Plates and Shells is the first book devoted to the geometrically nonlinear response of inhomogeneous isotropic and functionally graded plates and shells. Concerned that the high loads common to many structures may result in nonlinear load–deflection relationships due to large deformations, author Hui-Shen Shen has been conducting investigations since 2001, paying particular attention to the nonlinear response of these plates and shells to nonlinear bending, postbuckling and nonlinear vibration. Nearly all the solutions presented are the results of investigations conducted by the author and his collaborators. The rigor of these investigative procedures allows the results presented within these pages to stand as a benchmark against which the validity and accuracy of other numerical solutions may be measured

Mechanics and model-based control are both rapidly expanding scientific fields and fundamental disciplines of mechatronics, sharing demanding mathematical and system-theoretic formulations and methods. The papers in this volume deal with smart materials, which allow the design and implementation of new types of actuator/sensor fields and networks. Main topics treated are fundamental studies on laminated, composite and functionally graded materials, thermal and piezoelectric actuation, active and passive damping, as well as vibrations and waves in smart structures. The book is based on the 1st Japanese-Austrian Workshop which took place in Linz in Fall 2008.

Composites materials have aroused a great interest over the last few decades. Several applications of fibrous composites, functionally graded materials, laminated composites, nano-structured reinforcements, morphing structures, can be found in many engineering fields, such as aerospace, mechanical, naval and civil engineering. The necessity of lightweight structures, smart and adaptive systems, high-level strength, have led both the academic research and the manufacturing development to a recurring employment of these materials. Many journal papers and technical notes have been published extensively over the last seventy years in international scientific journals of different engineering fields. For this reason, the establishment of this second edition of Mechanics of Composites International Conference has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the first edition occurred in 2014 at Stony Brook University (USA). MECHCOMP wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Porto (Portugal), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.
