HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? revisits some of the most extraordinary moments from the history of endurance sports to show how mental strength allows some athletes to perform at a level way beyond their physical limits – to will their body to do what was previously thought biologically impossible. Drawing on cutting-edge scientific research it suggests concrete habits and tactics we can use to cultivate our own mental strength, whilst providing thrilling accounts of some of the most inspiring and astonishing feats in sporting history. In 2010 Sammy Wanjiru entered the Boston Marathon suffering from injuries to his knee and his lower back, a stomach virus that prevented him from training and a lifestyle that meant he spent more time in nightclubs than on the track. He shouldn’t have even been able to finish the race, and at times he seemed as if he literally had nothing left to give, yet in an epic battle he crossed the finishing line first. How did he manage it? HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? describes a new 'psychobiological' model of endurance performance connecting the mind, body and brain. Compelling accounts from triathlon, cycling, running, rowing and swimming are viewed through the lens of this model shedding new light on what science has to say about mental fortitude in sports. Featured athletes include: Sammy Wanjiru, Jenny Barringer, Greg LeMond, Willie Stewart, Cadel Evans, Joseph Sullivan, Paula Newby-Fraser, Ryan Vail, Thomas Voeckler, Ned Overend, Steve Prefontaine

Matt Lambert's Keim is a special kind of secret. It's a book wrapped in whispers, gossip, innuendo, rumour, myth, mystique, and mystery. His featured "Lovers, Friends, Muses, a Husband" shares in the duplicity of this masterful young photographer's lens. That his chosen cover is an anonymous cock is telling. It's mid-ejaculation. A double exposure shows its arc of movement and a small shower of sperm glides off the right hand side of the page. This camboy view is analogous to Lambert's generational twist on the documentation of adolescent sexual behaviour. The photographic diary as rite of passage for artist and subject is a well-documented path. Larry Clark's autobiographical Tulsa (1971) shocked people by revealing the sinewy torsos of his teenage friends-protrusions of cocks, needles, and gun barrels penetrating the sexualized silhouette. It was not what society wanted to see, but thats denial for you. If Lambert has a photographic lineage, it's more likely to be Nan Goldin and her seminal book The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1985). The Kodachrome-rich reds and browns, the shot-from-the-hip angles, and the incredible intimacy of "Roommates in Bed" (1981), or "Skinhead Having Sex in London" (1978), is much echoed in Lambert's work. However, that's where the influence ends, Lambert's worldview is not a ballad, nor is it about dependency. Whereas Goldin's study of family and relationship is about the politics of sexual intimacy, Lambert is apolitical-he starts and ends with sex. It's therefore independent of relationships. He doesn't care to reveal who is who. Unlike in Goldin's book, no one in Keim has a name, a status, or a sense of purpose in the action other than sexual. All are anon. Most are turned on. - Jefferson Hack.

88 Days To Kandahar

The “first” Afghan War, a CIA war in response to 9/11, was directed by the CIA Station Chief in Islamabad. It put Hamid Karzai in power in 88 days. “If you want an insider’s account of the first American-Afghan War, you can’t do better than this…Important reading to understand where we are today” (Library Journal). From his preparation of the original, post-9/11 war plan, approved by President Bush, through to “final” fleeting victory, Robert Grenier relates the tale of the “southern campaign,” which drove al-Qa’ida and the Taliban from Kandahar, its capital, in an astonishing eighty-eight days. “With his ringside seat as the senior agency official stationed closest to Afghanistan, Grenier is able to describe meeting by meeting, sometimes phone call after phone call, how events unfolded” (The New York Times). In his gripping account, we meet: General Tommy Franks, who bridles at CIA control of “his” war; General “Jafar Amin,” a gruff Pakistani intelligence officer who saves Grenier from committing career suicide; Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan’s brilliant ambassador to the US, who tries to warn her government of the al-Qa’ida threat; and Hamid Karzai, the puzzling anti-Taliban insurgent, a man with elements of greatness, petulance, and moods. With suspense and insight, Grenier details his very personal struggles and triumphs. 88 Days to Kandahar is “an action-packed tale, rich in implication, of the post-9/11 race to unseat the Taliban and rout al-Qaida in Afghanistan” (Kirkus Reviews).
