Reti's "Other" Classic Ask most chessplayers about the works by Richard Reti, and most will quickly reply Modern Ideas in Chess. His Masters of the Chessboard will be a distant second and that is unfortunate, because in many ways Masters is more comprehensive and instructive than its better-known predecessor. He packs it with advice, even for beginners. Opening theory is a priority. Reti tells the student to understand "the basic idea" of each opening, and goes into considerable detail as he explains each of the popular lines of the day, including, of course, his own Reti Opening. Some of the finest parts of the book are the mini-essays, most of them on openings, but also on rook endgames. It's remarkable that Reti manages to do this without going into long variations. This practical approach is also evident when he deals with positional themes. For example, Masters can be appreciated as almost a primer on the subject of how to turn the two bishops into a significant advantage. As noted by American grandmaster Andy Soltis in his Foreword, this entire book is "wonderfully instructive." And now it is available in a 21st-century edition, with figurine algebraic notation, with many diagrams and photos added.

Are you a chess addict, or do you just play at it? Whatever you are, you will be enlightened, intrigued, amused by this gossipy, intimate account of chess masters and how they operate. Like all of Fine's book, this one combines humor, understanding and profundity. It is a collection of 50 of the finest games played in recent years by the world's greatest masters. Each game has an introduction and is copiously annotated in such a way that a mere beginner can follow the workings of the world champion. Chess is more than a game; it is a passion. To people who play these games, the excitement, the thrill, the glory of victory and the sorrow of defeat meant more than the cold logic of the pieces. The author has gone to great pains to highlight the human side of these battles of the giants as one who has known every leading master of the past 20 years well, he is eminently qualified to do so. Are chess masters people? Read this book and find out.

Format : PDF, ePub

The Genius of Alekhine In chess literature, there have only been a very few chess books that have immediately - and permanently - established themselves as classics. Lasker's Manual of Chess by Emanuel Lasker, Masters of the Chessboard by Richard Reti and Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual by Mark Dvoretsky are three that come to mind. There are of course others, among them My Best Games of Chess, 1908-1937 by the fourth world chess champion, Alexander Alekhine. The original English edition, published three-quarters of a century ago, used English descriptive notation, contained one photograph, no crosstables and was released in two separate volumes. This new 21st-century edition, presented with modern algebraic notation, has combined both books into a single volume, added more than three dozen archival photographs, crosstables, Alekhine's complete match and tournament records, a foreword by Russian grandmaster Igor Zaitsev, as well as many more diagrams. A comprehensive computer-assisted analytical supplement has also been prepared and is available for download at no extra charge, so that, if you wish, you may compare Alekhine's impressive notes with the preferences of the silicon monster. Whether you feel as if you are revisiting an old friend, or being introduced to this splendid game collection for the first time, you will marvel at how Alekhine's games and works remain in many respects extraordinarily consonant with the modern approach. And you will not fail to be impressed by the genuine genius that is Alekhine.

His victims included Capablanca, Alekhine and Nimzowitsch, while his elegant destruction of Bogolyubov deservedly won the beauty prize at New York 1924.
