Excerpt: Velgarth is the planetary setting created by Mercedes Lackey, the author of the Valdemar Saga novels. The continents are not named. The Valdemar Saga primarily focuses on the story of the nation of Valdemar, and according to Mercedes Lackey's official bibliography, there are twenty-seven novels and six anthologies. Many of the inhabitants of Velgarth possess supernatural abilities. These skills primarily fall under the categories of Magic and Mind-Magic; though a number of them fall outside of either description. Magic, in Velgarth, refers to the ability to use a normally-invisible form of energy to produce fantastic results. This energy, also referred to as "Mage-power," is present both in living beings and the environment. Powerful streams of energy, known as ley-lines, may be utilized by some mages; and only the most skilled "Adept-level" mages can control and use the powerful nodes, or reservoirs, where two or more ley-lines meet. These lines and nodes can occur naturally, or can be created by extremely skilled mages. From these nodes, the energy is slowly siphoned into a desolate nether plane called the Void; and later returned to the world (Storm Warning). Magic is said to act much in the same way that water does. It is present in nature everywhere, but slowly gathers together - first in runnel-lines, which come together into feeder-lines, which then join together into ley-lines, and points where ley-lines converge are known as nodes: similar to how brooks and creeks slowly become streams, then rivers, and then crossings of these magical rivers form deep natural reservoirs similar to lakes of variable sizes....

New York Times-bestselling author Mercedes Lackey's Herald Spy series, set in the beloved fantasy world of Valdemar Herald Mags, Valdemar’s first official Herald Spy, is well on his way to establishing a coterie of young informants, not only on the streets of Haven, but in the kitchens and Great Halls of the highborn and wealthy as well. The newly appointed King’s Own Herald, Amily, although still unsure of her own capability in that office, is doing fine work to support the efforts of Mags, her betrothed. She has even found a way to build an army of informants herself, a group of highly trained but impoverished young noblewomen groomed to serve the highborn ladies who live at Court, to be called “The Queens’s Handmaidens.” And King Kyril has come up with the grand plan of turning Mags and Amily’s wedding into a low-key diplomatic event that will simultaneously entertain everyone on the Hill and allow him to negotiate behind the scenes with all the attending ambassadors―something which had not been possible at his son Prince Sedric’s wedding. What could possibly go wrong? The answer, of course, is “everything.” For all is not well in the neighboring Kingdom of Menmellith. The new king is a child, and a pretender to the throne has raised a rebel army. And this army is―purportedly―being supplied with arms by Valdemar. The Menmellith Regency Council threatens war. With the help of a ragtag band of their unlikely associates, Mags and Amily will have to determine the real culprit, amass the evidence to convince the Council, and prevent a war nobody wants― ―and, somewhere along the way, get married.

Shoot-Out at Wall And Broad is a fable, but more fact than fiction, about a veteran activist money manger. An activist doesnt just take a position in a stock and passively wait until an anticipated scenario plays out and changes the value of his investment but instead writes the scenario and has a complete understanding of the realities of the business he is investing in. He is initially triggered into action on the short side by the follies, greeted enthusiastically by the herd on Wall Street, of an entrenched hereditary and incompetent management and then switches strategy completely when the stock collapses. His focus is on changing the strategy of a chastened management and, most importantly, of the markets perception of the stock. En route, he employs some old fashioned tape painting, option maneuvers, news management, perception manipulation, and ingenious financial engineering. There is always someone on the other side of the trade, and the protagonist matches wits with other money mangers, hedge funds, market manipulators and underwriters. A story not for those who believe in the tooth fairy but for the pragmatist who believes that investing is sometimes a zero sum game.
