A postcard craze gripped the nation from 1905 to 1920, as the rise of outdoor photography coincided with a wave of settlement and prosperity in Texas. Hundreds of people took up cameras, and photographers of note chose some of their best work for duplication as photo postcards—sold for a nickel and mailed for a penny to distant friends and relatives. These postcards, which now enjoy another kind of craze in the collecting world, left what author John Miller Morris calls a "significant visual legacy" of the history and social geography of Texas. For more than a decade, Morris has been finding and studying the photographers and methodically gathering their postcards. In Taming the Land, he shares those finds with readers, introducing each photographer and providing interpretive descriptions of the places, people, or events depicted in the photographs. The stories the cards tell—in the images captured and the messages carried—add an exceptional dimension to our understanding of life in rural Texas a century ago. Taming the Land presents postcards from twenty-four counties in the booming Texas Panhandle. This is the first book in a set called Plains of Light, which will collect and document turn-of-the-twentieth-century photo postcards from all over West Texas.

Wish You Were Here! Lost New York in Old Postcards documents the city from the turn of the century to the mid-1950s, the years in which hand-colored postcards were produced. These cards capture images of lost New York—buildings, places, parks, hotels, subways, restaurants, nightclubs, theaters, and stores—that no longer exist or have been transformed by the constant change defining New York as a work in progress. • An exhibit of the contents of this book can be seen at The Museum of the City of New York, where the author’s collection will be donated. Rod Kennedy, Jr.’s books include The Brooklyn Cookbook and The County Fair Cookbook with Lyn Stallworth; Atlantic City: 125 Years of Ocean Madness with Lee Eisenberg and Vicki Levi. He is the founder and president of Stadia Tins Ltd., which produces decorative tins that are replicas of major league baseball stadiums. Located in the center of the Delmarva Peninsula on the Wicomico River, Salisbury is a town steeped in history. Formed by an act of provincial legislature in 1732, Salisbury lies on the east bank of the river on the original land of William Winder. Salisbury developed into the commercial center of the peninsula by the time of the Civil War--it was the southernmost point at which all goods were shipped north. This strategic location also made Salisbury the distribution point for goods coming south, an advantage that placed the region at the center of the state's economic boom. In 1867, Wicomico County was formed and Salisbury was chosen as the county seat. In the 20th century, Salisbury prospered into a communication and financial center for all of lower Maryland.

What if the 1587 Lost Colony of Roanoke was not lost? What if the survivors left Roanoke Island, North Carolina and found their way to Georgia? That is the scenario scholars contemplated when a series of engraved stones were found in the 1930's. The first, found near the Chowan River in North Carolina, claimed that Eleanor Dare and a few other settlers had made their way inland after an Indian attack wiped out the rest of the colony. Among the dead were Eleanor's daughter, Virginia Dare, the first English child born in North America, and Eleanor's husband Ananias. The remaining Dare Stones, more than forty in number, told a fantastic tale of how Eleanor and the survivors made their way overland, first to South Carolina, and then to Georgia. If true, North Carolina stood to lose one of its most cherished historical legends. Author David La Vere weaves the story of the Dare Stones with that of the Lost Colony of Roanoke in a tale that will fire your imagination and give you pause at the same time. In this true story that shook the world during the 1930s and early 1940s, the question on everyone's mind was: Had the greatest American mystery - the Lost Colony - finally been solved?

Not only can parents entertain their child and convey the beauty of language through books, they can also share their values and create lasting connections. Here, Allyn offers parents and caregivers essential advice on choosing appropriate titles for their children—taking into account a child’s age, attention ability, gender, and interests— along with techniques for reading aloud effectively. But what sets this book apart is the extraordinary, annotated list of more than three hundred titles suitable for the pivotal moments in a child’s life. With category themes ranging from friendship and journeys to thankfulness, separations, silliness, and spirituality, What to Read When is a one-of-a-kind guide to how parents can best inspire children through reading together. In addition, Pam Allyn includes an indispensable “Reader’s Ladder” section, with recommendations for children at every stage from birth to age ten.
