This book extends current understandings of the effects of using locative social media on spatiality, the experience of time and identity. In recent years, there has been a rapid growth of location-based social networking services, such as Foursquare and Facebook Places, which have attracted an increasing number of users and greatly enriched their urban experience. Typical location-based social networking sites allow a user to "check in" at a real-world POI (point of interest, e.g., a hotel, restaurant, theater, etc.), leave tips toward the POI, and share the check-in with their online friends. The check-in action bridges the gap between real world and online social networks, resulting in a new type of social networks, namely location-based social networks (LBSNs). Compared to traditional GPS data, location-based social networks data contains unique properties with abundant heterogeneous information to reveal human mobility, i.e., "when and where a user (who) has been to for what," corresponding to an unprecedented opportunity to better understand human mobility from spatial, temporal, social, and content aspects. The mining and understanding of human mobility can further lead to effective approaches to improve current location-based services from mobile marketing to recommender systems, providing users more convenient life experience than before. This book takes a data mining perspective to offer an overview of studying human mobility in location-based social networks and illuminate a wide range of related computational tasks. It introduces basic concepts, elaborates associated challenges, reviews state-of-the-art algorithms with illustrative examples and real-world LBSN datasets, and discusses effective evaluation methods in mining human mobility. In particular, we illustrate unique characteristics and research opportunities of LBSN data, present representative tasks of mining human mobility on location-based social networks, including capturing user mobility patterns to understand when and where a user commonly goes (location prediction), and exploiting user preferences and location profiles to investigate where and when a user wants to explore (location recommendation), along with studying a user's check-in activity in terms of why a user goes to a certain location.

Location spoofing refers to a variety of emerging online geographic practices that allow users to hide their true geographic locations. The proliferation of location spoofing in recent years has stirred debate about the reliability and convenience of crowd-sourced geographic information and the use of location spoofing as an effective countermeasure to protect individual geo-privacy and national security. However, these polarized views will not contribute to a solid understanding of the complexities of this trend. Even today, we lack a robust method for detecting location spoofing and a holistic understanding about its multifaceted implications. Framing the issue from a critical realist perspective using a hybrid methodology, this dissertation aims to develop a Bayesian time geographic approach for detecting this trend in social media and to contribute to our understanding of this complex phenomenon from multiple perspectives. The empirical results indicate that the proposed approach can successfully detect certain types of location spoofing from millions of geo-tagged tweets. Drawing from the empirical results, I further qualitatively examine motivation for spoofing as well as other generative mechanisms of location spoofing, and discuss its potential social implications. Rather than conveniently dismissing the phenomenon of location spoofing, this dissertation calls on the GIScience community to tackle this controversial issue head-on, especially when legal decisions or political policies are reached using data from location-based social media. Only then can we promote more effective and trustworthy geographic practices in the age of big data.

The dissemination of new technologies and innovations such as colour television, home computer and the internet has contributed to an increasing benefit for consumers and organizations. Consumers’ choices increased in terms of product variety and hence the complexity of consumers’ decision-making processes rose. Therefore, it has been ever since relevant for marketers to analyse and evaluate consumers’ decision-making processes and consumers’ behaviour. With the evolution and diffusion from mobile phones to smart phones a newdf horizon for consumers opened and a new dimension to mobile devices added, consisting of the accessibility and availability of information regardless location and time. Consequently, consumers’ decision-making processes have been influenced and the relevancy of mobile-location based marketing and related services for consumers and organizations increased. The present master dissertation constitutes on the increasing importance of mobile location-based marketing and services. The objective is to investigate the impact of location-based services on consumers’ buying behaviour which is significantly impacted by consumer-decision making processes. Therefore, relevant theoretical models and theories concerning consumers’ decision-making process and buying behaviour are described and evaluated. Furthermore, primary data is collected via online questionnaires and face-to-face interviews, in order to conduct an empirical analysis. The results reveal that consumers’ requirements, towards mobile-location based marketing including location-based services such as shopping apps and mobile advertisement, are segmented. It is identified that technology affine consumers are more likely to purchase across-channels. Further, these consumers show a higher acceptance of stimuli conveyed by mobile advertisement. Personal and psychological factors such as price sensibility, lifestyle orientation and consumers’ involvement are identified as impacting factors on consumers’ decision-making process within this research.
