Instrumental Activities Of Daily Living In Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment

Author : Eduardo Leal

Between 2012 and 2050, people age 65 and older in the United States are expected to increase from 14% to 22%. By 2050, the number of individuals living with AD in the United States is projected to grow to 13.8 million. A strong predictor of future rate of progression to neurodegenerative disease is an individual’s functional ability, which is commonly observed by family members, friends, or colleagues. This literature review investigated the instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) that are prone to be significantly affected in older adults that complain about memory deficits. Additionally, this research also studied how individuals with different MCI subtype differ regarding their IADLs and the relationship between social participation and IADL. This systematic review involved online searches of the EBSCOhost databases and Cobimet virtual library. The current literature review examined 14 articles that researched IADL deficits among older adults with memory impairment and 4 articles that looked at the relationship between social participation and instrumental activities of daily living among community-dwelling elderly individuals. A plausible conclusion from this literature review is that medication management, telephone use and keeping appointments are IADLs prone to deteriorate significantly in MCI individuals compared to cognitively healthy individuals. There is not enough evidence to show that multidomain MCI is associated with greater functional impairment. Nevertheless, it can be concluded at this time that social participation is positively associated with IADL

Adults are being increasingly diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and this book provides strategies for concerned individuals to help slow the onset of the condition. Around 50% of adults with MCI go on to develop dementia, but research shows that self-help through early intervention and preventative measures can hugely slow this down. The self-help measures in this book include memory aids, health and lifestyle changes, activities, therapies and technological aids. All of them are known to improve cognition and can be incorporated into daily life. Every measure is firmly based in current research, and this book is also applicable to those with early-stage dementia wishing to delay the onset of more severe cognitive impairment. Given the paramount importance of early intervention to prevent cognitive impairment worsening, this book is essential reading for any older individual wanting the best strategies to help with how to do this in practice.

Vascular Disease Alzheimer S Disease And Mild Cognitive Impairment

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) are commonly viewed as the first and second most common types of dementia, respectively. The traditional paradigm has been to view and treat each illness as a separate entity with a separate pathophysiology. However, clinical and pathological studies suggest that the boundary separating AD and VaD, as well as their mild cognitive impairment (MCI) analogs, is not well defined. Thus, there is increased interest in viewing these diseases along a spectrum because of the significant overlap in the characterization and diagnosis of AD, VaD, and MCI. The focus of this edited volume is to examine how AD and VaD, as well as their MCI analogs, are best viewed as a heterogeneous, intersecting, if not a continuous disease state rather than separate, distinct entities. This book examines this approach by providing empirically based evidence, reviews of the literature, and chapters by key leaders in the field and will be of interest to clinical neuropsychologists and anyone studying or treating dementia in its many forms.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are no longer objects gathering dust on a shelf; instead, they have become intrinsic in our everyday lives. They are now even taking on an indispensable role in many clinical and rehabilitation settings. In the past decade there has been a surge of interest in using ICT with elderly people, both with and without dementia, in various clinical and research settings. On the one hand, ICT can supplement the assessment of functional ability by more precisely evaluating the nature and extent of functional impairment; on the other hand, ICT can be used to support elderly people in their everyday activities, as well as to ameliorate symptoms and improve quality of life through stimulation and rehabilitation. This is the intention driving the development of Serious Games (SG), which are digital applications (often based on Virtual Reality) specifically adapted for purposes other than entertaining, including rehabilitation, training and education. Finally, ICT can also play a key role in the development of interactive educational programs to support caregivers of people living with dementia. A handful of interesting studies have started to investigate the effectiveness of employing ICT in people with different types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is therefore timely to attempt to scope this newly emerging field, as well as to foster a dialogue among the different professionals, including academics, clinicians and computer engineers, working in the area. With this in mind, the Research Topic “ICT for assessment and rehabilitation in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders” aims to provide new and interesting insights into the current use of ICT in healthy and pathological aging. The intent is also to identify challenges and new perspectives in the field, gather recommendations for the application of ICT in AD and related disorders in clinical practice, and to showcase cutting edge clinical research. The articles included in this Frontier Research Topics have more than achieved this aim and are a perfect illustration of how ICT can be used to enhance the lives of people living dementia and their caregivers.

What are the boundary zones between normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD)? Are many elderly people whom we regard as normal actually in the early stages of AD? Alzheimer's disease does not develop overnight; the early phases may last for years or even decades. Recently, clinical investigators have identified a transitional condition between normal aging and and very early Alzheimer's disease that they have called mild cognitive impairment, or MCI. This term typically refers to memory impairment beyond what one would expect in individuals of a given age whose other abilities to function in daily life are well preserved. Persons who meet the criteria for mild cognitive impairment have an increased risk of progressing to Alzheimer's disease in the near future. Though many questions about this condition and its underlying neuropathology remain open, full clinical trials are currently underway worldwide aimed at preventing the progression from MCI to Alzheimer's disease. This book addresses the spectrum of issues involved in mild cognitive impairment, and includes chapters on clinical studies, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, neuropathology, biological markers, diagnostic approaches, and treatment. It is intended for clinicians, researchers, and students interested in aging and cognition, among them neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians, clinical psychologists, and neuropsychologists.
