But it turns out that Jeremy wants more than a one-night stand...and he wants it from Rilka! The Meatball Mistress: Big-haired Brooklynite Cara Manzoni's life has become a cliche--she found her fiance cheating with her hairdresser and now she has no apartment, no job, and nowhere to go. When she flees to the Jersey Shore, she winds up at Ryan Garridy's struggling Italian restaurant. Ryan thinks fiesty Cara's trouble with a capital T, but her Sicilian meatballs are to die for! Dublin has set a rule for the Breed to live by, which they must obey to survive. For what man fears, he will try to destroy and so the Breed must live within mortal bounds. Alex is a man with a past. In the sixth century court of King Arthur, he is Allexus, a prince and a knight whose unorthodox style of fighting- relying on the strength of the mind as much as of the body-draws scorn from some and curiosity from Arthur. The test of that prophecy leaps to modern-day Houston, where Alex confronts a very different world and a new band of adversaries. Join Alex and Linda Kay in a love story that will tear at the heart, a tale of warriors and soldiers and of the effort to create the ultimate fighter. Go back in time to see what demolished an allegiance between two men. Learn what to live as the Breed and then ask yourself, "Could I take the blood of another to survive?" Take a close look at the everyday people you see-they could be the Breed.

More than twenty years ago, a disillusioned college graduate named Peter Jenkins set out with his dog Cooper to look for himself and his nation. His memoir of what he found, A Walk Across America, captured the hearts of millions of Americans. Now, Peter is a bit older, married with a family, and his journeys are different than they were. Perhaps he is looking for adventure, perhaps inspiration, perhaps new communities, perhaps unspoiled land. Certainly, he found all of this and more in Alaska, America's last wilderness. Looking for Alaska is Peter's account of eighteen months spent traveling over twenty thousand miles in tiny bush planes, on snow machines and snowshoes, in fishing boats and kayaks, on the Alaska Marine Highway and the Haul Road, searching for what defines Alaska. Hearing the amazing stories of many real Alaskans--from Barrow to Craig, Seward to Deering, and everywhere in between--Peter gets to know this place in the way that only he can. His resulting portrait is a rare and unforgettable depiction of a dangerous and beautiful land and all the people that call it home. He also took his wife and eight-year-old daughter with him, settling into a "home base" in Seward on the Kenai Peninsula, coming and going from there, and hosting the rest of their family for extended visits. The way his family lived, how they made Alaska their home and even participated in Peter's explorations, is as much a part of this story as Peter's own travels. All in all, Jenkins delivers a warm, funny, awe-inspiring, and memorable diary of discovery-both of this place that captures all of our imaginations, and of himself, all over again.

A RIVETING, GROUNDBREAKING ACCOUNT OF HOW THE WAR ON CRIME HAS TORN APART INNER-CITY COMMUNITIES Forty years in, the tough on crime turn in American politics has spurred a prison boom of historic proportions that disproportionately affects Black communities. It has also torn at the lives of those on the outside. As arrest quotas and high tech surveillance criminalize entire blocks, a climate of fear and suspicion pervades daily life, not only for young men entangled in the legal system, but for their family members and working neighbors. Alice Goffman spent six years in one Philadelphia neighborhood, documenting the routine stops, searches, raids, and beatings that young men navigate as they come of age. In the course of her research, she became roommates with Mike and Chuck, two friends trying to make ends meet between low wage jobs and the drug trade. Like many in the neighborhood, Mike and Chuck were caught up in a cycle of court cases, probation sentences, and low level warrants, with no clear way out. We observe their girlfriends and mothers enduring raids and interrogations, "clean" residents struggling to go to school and work every day as the cops chase down neighbors in the streets, and others eking out a living by providing clean urine, fake documents, and off the books medical care. This fugitive world is the hidden counterpoint to mass incarceration, the grim underside of our nation's social experiment in punishing Black men and their families. While recognizing the drug trade's damage, On The Run reveals a justice system gone awry: it is an exemplary work of scholarship highlighting the failures of the War on Crime, and a compassionate chronicle of the families caught in the midst of it. "A remarkable feat of reporting . . . The level of detail in this book and Goffman's ability to understand her subjects' motivations are astonishing—and riveting."—The New York Times Book Review

ISBN : 9781595586674
Genre : Fiction

Format : PDF, ePub, Mobi

Following his brilliant portrait of Maurice Ravel, Jean Echenoz turns to the life of one of the greatest runners of the twentieth century, and once again demonstrates his astonishing abilities as a prose stylist. Set against the backdrop of the Soviet liberation and post–World War II communist rule of Czechoslovakia, Running— a bestseller in France—follows the famed career of Czech runner Emil Zátopek: a factory worker who, despite an initial contempt for athletics as a young man, is forced to participate in a footrace and soon develops a curious passion for the physical limits he discovers as a long-distance runner. Zátopek, who tenaciously invents his own brutal training regimen, goes on to become a national hero, winning an unparalleled three gold medals at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and breaking countless world records along the way. But just as his fame brings him upon the world stage, he must face the realities of an increasingly controlling regime. Written in Echenoz’s signature style—elegant yet playful—Running is both a beautifully imagined and executed portrait of a man and his art, and a powerful depiction of a country’s propagandizing grasp on his fate.

Far Away Run The Roads

Margarita Borkaev (Borukaeva) has a romantic profession. She is a microbe hunter, and she pursued her prey with great ardor in some of the most prestigious laboratories of the Soviet Union. Then fate willed her to the front lines of microbiology in the United States of America. Undoubtedly, the riddles of this science seemed to her fantastically fascinating in light of the romantic nature of her soul, which, from her earliest adolescence manifested itself in its pull to find self-expression in poetry. Thus arose her first collection of poems (published in Moscow). Poemsfrom those giving a lyric voice to important social issues, to poems that chronicled the joys, the vicissitudes, and the sorrows of love and sought to embody the beauty of naturewere written throughout her entire life. These poems appear regularly in the Russian-speaking American newspapers. Margarita also took a great interest in prose. Her essays, stories, and short novels have been published in American (in English) and Russian-American (in Russian) magazines and newspapers. R ecently, she has published this book in Russia. The book is based on autobiographical events, but includes stories about people involved in Margaritas life, and reflects conflicts she experienced in the Soviet Union. The content of some of the stories in this book is dramatic, but the style is so lyrical that it reminds one of verse in prose form. The book was instantly absorbed and disseminated by her readers. I found to reading this book effortless, entirely engrossing, since in it is reflected all of the facets of Margaritas character, her openness towards new people and new experiences, her friendliness, her unlimited capacity for compassion and understanding. Margarita has a remarkable ability understand of the core of a person and then to describe it with such affection and sympathy that, as a reader, I felt I shared not just her adventures, but also her friendships. I advise you to read this book as a long time friend and an old admirer of Margaritas talent. I am certain, that like me, once you begin it will capture your imagination until you reach the final paragraph. And, like me, long after you close the cover you will still reflect on the extraordinary events you will have found there, and the unpredictable twist of fate that can be expected us all. Run and Tell That is a book of short stories that is breathtaking and heart pounding. You won’t be able to put it down. Some stories may cause you to get angry, or even cause you to have hope again; hold on to your seats. Stay still—inhale, exhale. One thing is for sure; many people will be able to relate to one of these stories, be it good or bad. The main thing is, don’t take offense; think about it, and twirl it around in your head. Think about the secrets that someone you know has shared with you, the stories you heard from friends and family, and things that have happened to some of them. Believe it or not, one of these stories just may be yours, and if it is, don’t worry, I got you! I will tell it just like it is! Maybe this may cause the abuser to stop the abuse, or the liars to stop lying. There are men and women out there that have so much dirt in their backyards that you can’t see the grass. To the mothers and fathers, pay close attention to your kids. To husbands and wives, stop lying to each other; it is what is. Communicate, and don’t be afraid of what he or she may say. Knowing is a beginning of moving forward toward dealing with whatever situations you face. Grow up people; you have the right to choose how you want to live your life. It’s all about choices! Let’s learn how to stop spinning our wheels, and know life goes on; you win some and lose some. Life has never been fair, and don’t go around thinking that is it. Just be true to yourself and your good. In this world, we have freedom of speech, freedom of choice, and the right to be happy.
