The study of emotions has rapidly expanded in recent decades, incorporating interdisciplinary research on the genetic underpinnings and neural mechanisms of emotion. This has involved a wide range of methods from as varied fields as behavioral genetics, molecular biology, and cognitive neuroscience, and has allowed researchers to start addressing complex multi-level questions such as: what is the role of genes in individual differences in emotions and emotional vulnerability to psychopathology, and what are the neural mechanisms through which genes and experience shape these emotion? Genes, Brain, and Emotions: Interdisciplinary and translational perspectives offers a comprehensive account of this interdisciplinary field of research, bridging psychology, genetics, and neuroscience, with rich sections dedicated to methods, cognitive and biological mechanisms, and psychopathology. Written by leading researchers who have each inspired new research directions and innovated methods and concepts, this book will be of interest to anyone working or studying in the field of affective science, whether they be behavioural geneticists, psychologists and psychiatrists, or cognitive neuroscientists.

The most important battle you face is the battle for your mind, will, and emotions. Why? Because it greatly determines how much of God and his kingdom you will experience while you're on earth. The thoughts we entertain, the words we speak, and the choices we make shape and influence not only our reality, but all of creation. The enemy loves to highlight our temporary challenges; poke at our feelings and stir up fear, frustration, doubt, and self-pity; and get us mired in murmuring and complaining. Yet the Bible shows us that all of heaven is available to us right now. In these pages you will discover the secret of Colossians: the incredible power of Christ in you. When you learn how to access his ever-present power and goodness, feelings and fears will no longer control you. You will go from being overwhelmed to being an overcomer. Heaven is only a decision away. How will you choose?

Religious Belief And Emotional Transformation

Author : Paul Lauritzen
ISBN : 0838752179
Genre : Religion
File Size : 76.2 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 858
Read : 503

"Even a cursory reading of contemporary moral philosophy and theological ethics reveals that discussions in these disciplines are often far removed from the actual experiences of individuals struggling to live morally. One reason for this is the general silence in most modern ethical theory about the place of emotions in the moral life. In this study of the possibility of emotional/moral transformation through religious belief and practice, Paul Lauritzen breaks this silence and attempts to explain both why emotions have been ignored and why they must be reclaimed." "Drawing on work in philosophical psychology, cultural anthropology, and religious studies, Lauritzen develops an account of emotions and of the self that allows us to see how a system of religious belief and practice may dramatically transform the emotional life of the believer. He argues that emotions are not biologically basic experiences, invariant from culture to culture, but rather are culturally mediated artifacts that are inescapably tied to communities of belief and practice that sustain particular understandings of the self and its world." "To this end, Lauritzen sketches a "social-constructivist" account of human emotions and analyzes the emotion of anger in detail. By comparing anger as it is found in our culture with accounts of "anger" in certain non-Western societies, the author demonstrates that emotions are crucially shaped in communities of belief and practice and are thus open to transformation with a change in belief and practice." "This possibility is explored at length by examining the way in which a framework of retributive justice structures the experience of anger in our culture. According to Lauritzen, this framework presupposes that the human condition is characterized by limited resources, on the one hand, and by limited generosity, on the other. Against this background, anger will appear to be a natural retributive response to violations of individuals' rights." "The author concludes the study by showing how, given particular religious views about human life and history, the framework of retributive justice may be transformed or transcended in ways that dramatically affect the emotional life of the believer."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Emotions And The Will

Author : Alexander Bain
ISBN : OXFORD:600068346
Genre : Consciousness

Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

The present publication is a sequel to my former one, on the Senses and the Intellect, and completes a Systematic Exposition of the Human Mind. The generally admitted but vaguely conceived doctrine of the connection between mind and body has been throughout discussed definitely. In treating of the Emotions, I include whatever is known of the physical embodiment of each. The Natural History Method, adopted in delineating the Sensations, is continued in the Treatise on the Emotions. The first chapter is devoted to Emotion in general; after which the individual kinds are classified and discussed; separate chapters being assigned to the Aesthetic Emotions, arising on the contemplation of Beauty in Nature and Art, and to the Ethical, or the Moral Sentiment. Under this last head, I have gone fully into the Theory of Moral Obligation. It has been too much the practice to make the discussion of the Will comprise only the single metaphysical problem of Liberty and Necessity. Departing from this narrow usage, I have sought to ascertain the nature of the faculty itself, its early germs, or foundations in the human constitution, and the course of its development, from its feeblest indications in infancy to the maturity of its power. Five chapters are occupied with this investigation; and five more with subjects falling under the domain of the Will, including the Conflict of Motives, Deliberation, Resolution, Effort, Desire, Moral Habits, Duty, and Moral Inability. A closing chapter embraces the Free-will controversy. As in my view, Belief is essentially related to the active part of our being, I have reserved the consideration of it to the conclusion of the Treatise on the Will. The final dissertation of the work is on Consciousness. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved).
