Quickie (education, U. of Sheffield) agrees that schools of the near future must teach literacy, numeracy, and other skills, but wonders what else children need to learn to life in the present and coming society. He proposes his curriculum for life as an alternative to the British National Curriculum, and focuses on such themes as social development, thinking skills, parenting, citizenship, and work related learning. The International Encyclopedia of Curriculum is a unique collection of analytical and empirical studies on curriculum-related issues. Its 280 articles, authored by experts from 22 countries, are grouped in two sections. The first, Curriculum as a Domain of Enquiry, contains articles dealing with general topics in this field. The second, Specific Study Areas, contains articles on more than 120 subjects currently taught in schools. It is the first attempt to provide in a single volume a comprehensive review of approaches and problems related to teaching traditional school subjects such as mathematics, history, and classical languages, as well as the innovative ones such as film studies, women's studies, communication skills, set theory in mathematics and energy education. The book is an invaluable tool for educationists, educational administrators, supervisors, researchers, policy makers and curriculum planners, and a source of information and inspiration for teachers and school-level curriculum co-ordinators.

Many Floridas: Women Envisioning Change began with a group feminist researchers, teachers, advocates and activists in Florida, long isolated and marginalized in small, under-funded and under-valued departments, programs and organizations, who worked together to form the Florida Consortium for Women's and Gender Studies (FCWGS). The essays in this collection report on the status of women in Florida, discuss service-learning as a feminist pedagogy, describe graduate student's research on issues concerning women in Florida, and debate the value and consequences of internationalizing Women's Studies. This collection of feminist papers, originally presented at the inaugural Florida Consortium for Women's and Gender Studies conference in April, 2006, reflects the deeper meaning of its title. Each of the authors write from the standpoint of various intersections of class, race, ethnicity, age, sexuality and profession, and it is from these unique social locations that they dare to envision change. Everyone talks about bridging the gap between theory and practice, but the Florida Consortium for Women's and Gender Studies (FCWGS) is actually walking the talk. Their work represents an exportable product! I immediately envisioned feminist academics in every state developing similar consortia to bring the concerns of everyday women into the heart of the academy. Women's and Gender Studies Departments/Programs represent the gold standard for interdisciplinary and culturally-diverse studies. Yet, despite the fact that virtually every university and college stresses the value of interdisciplinary studies and a culturally-diverse curriculum, all too few academic institutions adequately fund and support their Women's and Gender Studies Departments/Programs. Were Women's and Gender Studies Departments/Programs amply staffed and financially supported, their faculty members and students could engage in the kind of meaningful service-learning initiatives and outreach activities described in Many Floridas. -Rosemarie Tong, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor for Health Care Ethics, Affiliate Professor of Women's Studies, Director, Center for Professional and Applied Ethics This new collection responds to that clarion call by addressing the local and the global by interrupting and inserting unique voices within and outside of the classroom, making meaningful and durable connections between the educational institution and the community. In this cultural moment, where the struggles between and among communities, resources, and institutions multiply, it is vital that we push for nuanced conversations, courageous inquiry, and responsible suggestions. This collection is an exemplary model of transformative conversations; the kind of conversations that I hope are manifesting locally and globally. -Orathai Northern, PhD, Visiting Instructor, University of South Florida Lakeland

Engaging Young People In Civic Life

The myth of generations of disengaged youth has been shattered by increases in youth turnout in the 2004, 2006, and 2008 primaries. Young Americans are responsive to effective outreach efforts, and this collection addresses how to best provide opportunities for enhancing civic learning and forming lasting civic identities. The thirteen original essays are based on research in schools and in settings beyond the schoolyard where civic life is experienced. One focus is on programs for those schools in poor communities that tend to overlook civic education. Another chapter reports on how two city governments--Hampton, Virginia, and San Francisco--have invited youth to participate on boards and in agencies. A cluster of chapters focuses on the civic education programs in Canada and Western Europe, where, as in the United States, immigration and income inequality raise challenges to civic life.

Disability and the Politics of Education: An International Reader is a rich resource that deals comprehensively with the many aspects of the complex topic of disability studies in education. For nearly two decades, global attention has been given to education as a human right through global initiatives such as Education for All (EFA) and the Salamanca Statement. Yet according to UNESCO, reaching the goals of EFA remains one of the most daunting challenges facing the global community. Today, millions of the world's disabled children cannot obtain a basic childhood education, particularly in countries with limited resources. Even in the wealthiest countries, many disabled children and youth are educationally segregated from the nondisabled, particularly if they are labeled with significant cognitive impairment. International agencies such as the United Nations and the World Bank have generated funds for educational development but, unfortunately, these funds are administered with the assumption that «west is best», thereby urging developing countries to mimic educational policies in the United States and the United Kingdom in order to prove their aid-worthiness. This «McDonaldization» of education reproduces the labeling, resource allocation, and social dynamics long criticized in disability studies. The authors in this volume explore these subjects and other complexities of disability and the politics of education. In doing so, they demonstrate the importance and usefulness of international perspectives and comparative approaches.
