The Laser Spectroscopy Conference held at Vail, Colorado, June 25-29, 1973 was in certain ways the first meeting of its kind. Var ious quantum electronics conferences in the past have covered non linear optics, coherence theory, lasers and masers, breakdown, light scattering and so on. However, at Vail only two major themes were developed - tunable laser sources and the use of lasers in spectro scopic measurements, especially those involving high precision. Even so, Laser Spectroscopy covers a broad range of topics, making possible entirely new investigations and in older ones orders of magnitude improvement in resolution. The conference was interdisciplinary and international in char acter with scientists representing Japan, Italy, West Germany, Canada, Israel, France, England, and the United States. Of the 150 participants, the majority were physicists and electrical engineers in quantum electronics and the remainder, physical chemists and astrophysicists. We regret, because of space limitations, about 100 requests to attend had to be refused.

The embryonic development of femtoscience stems from advances made in the generation of ultrashort laser pulses. Beginning with mode-locking of glass lasers in the 1960s, the development of dye lasers brought the pulse width down from picoseconds to femtoseconds. The breakthrough in solid state laser pulse generation provided the current reliable table-top laser systems capable of average power of about 1 watt, and peak power density of easily watts per square centimeter, with pulse widths in the range of four to eight femtoseconds. Pulses with peak power density reaching watts per square centimeter have been achieved in laboratory settings and, more recently, pulses of sub-femtosecond duration have been successfully generated. As concepts and methodologies have evolved over the past two decades, the realm of ultrafast science has become vast and exciting and has impacted many areas of chemistry, biology and physics, and other fields such as materials science, electrical engineering, and optical communication. In molecular science the explosive growth of this research is for fundamental reasons. In femtochemistry and femtobiology chemical bonds form and break on the femtosecond time scale, and on this scale of time we can freeze the transition states at configurations never before seen. Even for n- reactive physical changes one is observing the most elementary of molecular processes. On a time scale shorter than the vibrational and rotational periods the ensemble behaves coherently as a single-molecule trajectory.

Es zeigt sich, daß die meisten Lasertypen den konventionellen Lichtquellen überlegen sind hinsichtlich ihrer Ausgangsleistung pro Wellenlängenintervall und Raumwinkeleinheit Die Vorteile der beim Laser möglichen guten Bündelung der Ausgangsleistung in einen praktisch parallelen Strahl werden ftir verschiedene spektroskopische Anwendungen diskutiert. Spektrale Linienbreiten, die weit unter halb der Fluoreszenzbreiten von üblichen Spektrallampen liegen, lassen sich bei Lasern nur unter gewissen Betriebsbedingungen (Os zillation auf nur einer Resonatorfrequenz) realisieren. Mit verschie denen Methoden können solche fast monochromatischen Linien innerhalb bestimmter Grenzen kontinuierlich in ihrer Wellenlänge verschoben werden, wobei man den größten Abstimmungsbereich mit Farbstoff-Lasem und optischen parametrischen Oszillatoren erreicht. Mit verschiedenen Lasertypen können intensive Lichtpulse 13 mit Pulsdauern bis hinunter zu 1 o- sec erzeugt werden, die ftir die Untersuchung extrem schnell ablaufenden Prozesse von großer Be deutung sind. Im dritten Kapitel werden spektroskopische Untersuchungen mit Lasern als Lichtquelle beschrieben. Ausführlicher behandelt sind dabei absorptionsspektroskopische Messungen hoher Auflösung, laser-induzierte Fluoreszenz-Spektroskopie und spektroskopische Nachweismethoden ftir elastische und verschiedene unelastische Stoßprozesse. Photochemie mit Lasern und neue Wege in der ultraschnellen Flashphotolyse mit Riesenimpulslasern werden diskutiert. Neuere Untersuchungen in linearer und nicht linearer Ramanspektroskopie sind an einigen Beispielen kurz erläutert und die Bedeutung des Lasers für Lichtstreuungs-Messungen (Raman-, Raleigh-, Brillouin und Thompson-Streuung) wird hervorgehoben.
