Some people think the Old Testament has nothing to say about God as our Father, or about the Holy Spirit, whilst others try to find Jesus somewhere on every page of the Old Testament. Chris Wright brings a much-needed corrective to these misconceptions in his masterful three-in-one volume, Knowing God – The Trilogy. After exploring the identity and mission of Jesus in the light of the Scriptures he knew so well – our Old Testament, the book goes on to see how God reveals himself as Father in the same Scriptures, and works powerfully through his Spirit. Wright’s thoughtful and engaging exposition of multiple biblical texts invites us to encounter the Trinity not just as a doctrine we affirm but as persons we can know.

Examination Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Tubingen, 27 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: There is hardly any story about the origin of human beings that is as well-known as that of Adam and Eve. In every culture and religion legends exist of how mankind came into being, what our function on earth is, why we are mortal and where evil originates from. Hardly any story has had such an immense and lasting influence as the Christian story of the Fall of Man: every child knows the names of the first human beings, countless literary works refer to them, and numerous theories as to the intention of the story have been made. The text has been interpreted literally as well as allegorically, depending on the cultural, temporal and religious background of the interpreter, on the purpose (what they wanted to read out of the text) – and on the sex of the respective reader. Often enough, the story of the Fall served as a justification for discrimination of women and has thus become “the one that has been most generally abused” (Bal 2001: 149) – one starting point for scientists to engage in the origins, reasons, development, and actual status of misogyny. Starting with feminism, scientists have enlarged their field of work to gender relations in general. Today, we live in a place and time where women and men have equal rights, equal jobs and an equal social status. We think of social inequalities as happening either far away in place or long ago in time. We have the first female German Chancellor ever; a woman has the power to lead and represent our country. But still, a female Chancellor is unique and special in Germany. We find ourselves at the height of a debate about the sexes in society, in politics, and among scientists. The work of scientists and feminists has been going on and developing for the last three or four decades and is one of the reasons why today’s society is as equal as it is. This does not mean, however, that the only objective of the so-called gender studies is to bring about equality – on the contrary, even in apparently equal societies there is a lot more to examine than the status of women.

Journey Back to God explores Origen of Alexandria's creative, complex, and controversial treatment of the problem of evil. It argues that his layered cosmology functions as a theodicy that deciphers deeper meaning beneath cosmic disparity. Origen asks: why does God create a world where some suffer more than others? On the surface, the unfair arrangement of the world defies theological coherence. In order to defend divine justice against the charge of cosmic mismanagement, Origen develops a theological cosmology that explains the ontological status and origin of evil as well as its cosmic implications. Origen's theodicy hinges on the journey of the soul back to God. Its themes correlate with the soul's creation, fall and descent into materiality, gradual purification, and eventual divinization. The world, for Origen, functions as a school and hospital for the soul where it undergoes the necessary education and purgation. Origen carefully calibrates his cosmology and theology. He portrays God as a compassionate and judicious teacher, physician, and father who employs suffering for our amelioration. Journey Back to God frames the systematic study of Origen's theodicy within a broader theory of theodicy as navigation, which signifies the dynamic process whereby we impute meaning to suffering. It unites the logical and spiritual facets of his theodicy, and situates it in its third-century historical, theological, and philosophical context, correcting the distortions that continue to plague Origen scholarship. Furthermore, the study clarifies his ambiguous position on universalism within the context of his eschatology. Finally, it assesses the cogency and contemporary relevance of Origen's theodicy, highlighting the problems and prospects of his bold, constructive, and optimistic vision.

In recent sociological approaches to the Old Testament, Christians have been finding unexpected resources for their ethical reflection and action relative to the modern world's pressing social and economic dilemmas. This unique survey by Christopher Wright examines life in Old Testament Israel from an ethical perspective by considering how the economic facts of Israel's social structure were related to the people's religious beliefs. Observing the centrality of the family in the social, economic and religious spheres of Israelite life, Wright analyzes Israel's theology of land, the rights and responsibilities of property owners, and the socioeconomic and legal status of dependent persons in ancient Israel — wives, children, and slaves — showing the mutual interaction between such laws, institutions, and customs and the nation's covenant relationship with God. While primarily exegetical, God's People in God's Land contains many useful insights for Christian social ethics: Wright suggests how the ethical application of his findings might proceed as Christians with different theological perspectives and cultural contexts seek to work out the relevance of the Old Testament for today.

And a clear understanding and appreciation of His attributes can ignite the passion of every Christian's walk with Christ. In this compelling, gently instructive book Jeremiah affirms, "Without [the Spirit], we're about as useful to God's kingdom as an unplugged toaster."

Heather Holleman used to live a fragile life, a prisoner to fear, anxiety, and despair. Like many younger women, she knew Jesus, but she wasn’t strong in Him. Her search for comfort seemed unending. Then one day, while reading a simple statement in Scripture, “God guards the lives of his faithful ones” (Psalm 97:10), that all began to change. In Guarded by Christ: Knowing the God Who Rescues and Keeps Us, Heather guides women through a series of practical mental shifts that immensely helped her live strong in the Lord. Learn how in Jesus, you are guarded: By righteousness instead of condemnation By peace instead of anxiety By hope instead of despair By the Holy Spirit’s power instead of self-effort By a crucified life instead of a self-important one We all need maturity in Christ that prepares us not just to endure anything, but to live from the strength and peace of Jesus in every season. Guarded by Christ will help women cultivate this maturity, reconnecting them with the Savior who rescues, keeps, and holds us with His love.
