Best of the West: New Stories from the Wide Side of the Missouri, an annual anthology of exceptional short fiction rooted in the western United States, debuted in 1988 and continued publication until 1992. Recognizing that the West remains rewarding territory for literary explorations, James Thomas and D. Seth Horton revived the series in 2009. Best of the West 2011: New Stories from the Wide Side of the Missouri is the latest volume in what has become one of the nation's most important anthologies. Editors Horton and Thomas have chosen twenty stories by writers including Rick Bass, T. C. Boyle, Ron Carlson, Philipp Meyer, Dagoberto Gilb, Yiyun Li, Antonya Nelson, and Sam Shepard. Subjects vary from an Idaho family that breeds lions and tigers with disastrous results, to a Mormon veteran whose mind is taken over by a nineteenth-century consciousness, to a Texas boy who spends an afternoon with Bonnie and Clyde shortly before their deaths. Taken together, these stories suggest that the West has become one of the most exciting and diverse literary regions in the twenty-first century.

I have been involved in these wars ever since 2005. My first overseas contract was in Iraq. I started working for Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) November 5, 2005 in Balad, Iraq. I started out as lead mechanic and soon moved up to a supervisor. We worked on a lot of M915 that the army had, and KBR had Mercedes and Volvos that were not up armor. Many drivers had been killed in these trucks with no protection. After putting up KBR three years, I got a chance to jump on board with Dyncorp. Navistar had just come out with MRAP vehicle that was supposed to take the place of the Humvee. After going through their training in West Point, Mississippi, and Red River-u in New Boston, Texas, I was sent to Mosul, Iraq, and taught the opnet class on the MRAP vehicle. Mosul was considered one of the hot spots in northern Iraq, and of all the places I have been in Iraq, Mosul was the best. After spending a year in Mosul, I took off eighteen months and started working for Navistar/Defense. I was sent to Afghanistan as an FRS, assigned to the Jordanian army. I was told that I would have interpreters and transportation when I got in country. Afghanistan was nothing like Iraq. The leadership wasn't there, and there was no help for the FSRs that were on ground in Shank, no interpreters and no transportation.

This book is an autobiography of my life with my brother, Don from my early years growing up in Washington, D.C. as my mother Bernice Augusta along with my father for part of the period nurtured, sacrificed and cared for us with meager funds. . After separation from my father, my mother struggled even more and for several years twice sent us to Tulsa, Ok, where we were nurtured and given the utmost love, and learned to honor Jesus Christ by my maternal Grandmother, Minnie Mae Guess, who we affectionately called Mama Dear. Quintessentially my greatest fortune in my life was meeting and marrying Helen, who I met at Howard University. As I reflect back on our 52 years of marriage, she was the catalyst for any career success I had in the military and later in the U.S Government and for writing this book. She loved & adored her four children and a committed worshiper of Jesus Christ. However after her passing, I was again so fortunate to meet a gracious and lovely lady, named Rolando who has also accepted me with all of my imperfections and have made my life complete. Jack Adams

How long does it take to make a difference in the life of a child? For good or for ill, individual moments in a young person's life can make all the difference in their future. It may be something said or done by an adult who hardly thinks about it: a hug, a compliment, an intriguing question, a sincere applause. But in that moment, the child discovers who they are, what is important to them, why they matter, and sometimes even what their destiny will be. Most of us want to help encourage and build into this next generation, most of us see the need all around, but we just have no idea where to begin. This resource provides a weekly reflection piece for teens that aims specifically at helping them to integrate their faith into their lives more fully. Each weekly resource includes a scripture reflection, a challenge for action, and reflection questions. This resource speaks to the third goal of the USCCB’s “Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry”: “To foster the total personal growth of each young person.” Parents, Catholic high school teachers, and catechists often find that teens compartmentalize themselves, and may demonstrate faith-filled actions within the church or youth ministry setting, but behave very differently in other areas of their lives. Teens often mold their actions to obtain the approval of those around them, and may be one way at church, another way at home, and another way with their friends. This resource aims to help them to see the importance and rewards of integrating their faith into their life at home, school, church, in sports and activities, with friends, and even online.

Economics Of The 1

How much do economists really know? In most cases, they claim to have profound knowledge but in fact understand little and obscure almost everything. Most people are convinced that economics should be left to the ‘experts’, when they themselves are perfectly capable of understanding it. This book explains that mainstream economics serves the interests of the rich through its logical inconsistency and unabashedly reactionary conclusions. John F. Weeks exposes the myths of mainstream economics and explains in straightforward language why current policies fail to serve the vast majority of people in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. Their failure to serve the interests of the many results from their devoted service to the few.
