The hit Broadway show of 1912; the lost film of 1919; Katharine Hepburn, as Jo, sliding down a banister in George Cukor’s 1933 movie; Mark English’s shimmering 1967 illustrations; Jo—this time played by Sutton Foster—belting "I'll be / astonishing" in the 2004 Broadway musical flop: these are only some of the markers of the afterlife of Little Women. Then there’s the nineteenth-century child who wrote, "If you do not... make Laurie marry Beth, I will never read another of your books as long as I live." Not to mention Miss Manners, a Little Women devotee, who announced that the book taught her an important life lesson: "Although it’s very nice to have two clean gloves, it’s even more important to have a little ink on your fingers." In The Afterlife of Little Women, Beverly Lyon Clark, a leading authority on children’s literature, explores these and other after-tremors, both popular and academic, as she maps the reception of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel, first published in 1868. Clark divides her discussion into four historical periods. The first covers the novel’s publication and massive popularity in the late nineteenth century. In the second era—the first three decades of the twentieth century—the novel becomes a nostalgic icon of the domesticity of a previous century, while losing status among the literary and scholarly elite. In its mid-century afterlife (1930–1960), Little Women reaches a low in terms of its critical reputation but remains a well-known piece of Americana within popular culture. The book concludes with a long chapter on Little Women’s afterlife from the 1960s to the present—a period in which the reading of the book seems to decline, while scholarly attention expands dramatically and popular echoes continue to proliferate. Drawing on letters and library records as well as reviews, plays, operas, film and television adaptations, spinoff novels, translations, Alcott biographies, and illustrations, Clark demonstrates how the novel resonates with both conservative family values and progressive feminist ones. She grounds her story in criticism of children’s literature, book history, cultural studies, feminist criticism, and adaptation studies. Written in an accessible narrative style, The Afterlife of Little Women speaks to scholars, librarians, and devoted Alcott fans.

Louisa May Alcott (1832 – 1888) was an American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women, Good Wives and the sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. The first part of Little Women: or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy (1868), is a semi-autobiographical account of her childhood with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts. Part two, or Part Second, also known as Good Wives (1869), followed the March sisters into adulthood and their respective marriages. Little Men (1871) detailed Jo's life at the Plumfield School that she founded with her husband Professor Bhaer at the conclusion of Part Two of Little Women. And Jo's Boys (1886) completed the "March Family Saga". Alcott made women’s rights integral to her stories, and her fiction became her “most important feminist contribution” — even considering all the efforts Alcott made to help facilitate women’s rights during her lifetime.

Louisa May Alcott (1832 – 1888) was an American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Little Women and Good Wives, published in 1868 and 1869 respectively, is a story following the four March sisters and their friend Theodore “Laurie” Lawrence in Massachusetts in the 1800’s. The four girls each exhibit individual flaws and much of the plot is concerned with their journey to correct themselves, always supporting each other in the end despite their numerous squabbles. Margaret “Meg” March is the eldest sister and at the beginning of the tale is very preoccupied with materialistic possessions, Josephine “Jo” March is a tomboy with a fiery temper, Elizabeth “Beth” March is shy and gentle and Amy, being the youngest March sister, is spoilt and therefore prone to temper tantrums. Little Women follows the sisters for about a year, but Good Wives skips forward in time regularly so that by the end they are all of adult age. Little Men, or Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1871. Little Men follows the adventures of Jo March and her husband Professor Bhaer as they try to make their school for boys a happy, comfortable, and stimulating place. Jo’s Boys was first published in 1886. The novel is the final book in the unofficial Little Women series. In it, Jo's "children," now grown, are caught up in real world troubles.

"Dear Jo," wrote an old protege of Mr. and Mrs. Bhaer's, "here is a case after your own heart. This poor lad is an orphan, sick and friendless. He has been a street musician .... I think there is something in him. Give him a trial." Readers of "Little Women" will re member Jo and his model school at Plumfield, where poor children are taught, not only how to read and to write, but how to amuse and humanize themselves. In this establishment, where each boy has a little garden of his own, a share in a menagerie of small pets, and various privileges not to be found in ordinary schools, poor Nat Wake soon makes himself quite at home ; and in the course of time becomes a great favorite with Aunt Jo and her family of odd boys. Very delightful and very natural is the way in which the social characteristics of these boys is described. We see them at school, at church, in the garden, in the fields — learning, praying, working, playing, but always improving from rude, uncared-for waifs into useful and respectable members of society. The object of the book is evidently not so much to show what is, but what might be, done in school-reformatories, orphan asylums, &c. ; and though written especially for American readers, all the suggestions are applicable to parents, guardians, and teachers on every side of the Atlantic ; and if they would just try the experiment supposed to be carried out successfully at Plumfield, they might, after a while, exclaim with motherly Mrs. Jo: "Dear me! If men and women would only trust, help and understand one another as my children do, what a capital place the world would be!" 'Little Men' is one of the very few stories about children that children can really understand and admire, and thar adults can read with both pleasure and profit.
