The violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) is considered among the most influential performers in history and still maintains a strong following among violinists around the world. Dario Sarlo contributes significantly to the growing field of analytical research into recordings and the history of performance style. Focussing on Heifetz and his under-acknowledged but extensive performing relationship with the Bach solo violin works (BWV 1001-1006), Sarlo examines one of the most successful performing musicians of the twentieth century along with some of the most frequently performed works of the violin literature. The book proposes a comprehensive method for analysing and interpreting the legacies of prominent historical performers in the wider context of their particular performance traditions. The study outlines this research framework and addresses how it can be transferred to related studies of other performers. By building up a comprehensive understanding of multiple individual performance styles, it will become possible to gain deeper insight into how performance style develops over time. The investigation is based upon eighteen months of archival research in the Library of Congress’s extensive Jascha Heifetz Collection. It draws on numerous methods to examine what and how Heifetz played, why he played that way, and how that way of playing compares to other performers. The book offers much insight into the ’music industry’ between 1915 and 1975, including touring, programming, audiences, popular and professional reception and recording. The study concludes with a discussion of Heifetz’s unique performer profile in the context of violin performance history.

Notoriously reticent about his early years, violinist Jascha Heifetz famously reduced the story of his childhood to "Born in Russia. First lessons at 3. Debut in Russia at 7. Debut in Carnegie Hall at 17. That's all there is to say." Tracing his little-known upbringing, Jascha Heifetz: Early Years in Russia uncovers the events and experiences that shaped one of the modern era's most unique talents and enigmatic personalities. Using previously unstudied archival materials and interviews with family and friends, this biography explores Heifetz's meteoric rise in the Russian music world—from his first violin lessons with his father, to his studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with the well-known pedagogue Leopold Auer, to his tours throughout Russia and Europe. Spotlighting Auer’s close-knit circle of musicians, Galina Kopytova underscores the lives of artists in Russia’s "Silver Age"—an explosion of artistic activity amid the rapid social and political changes of the early 20th century.

(LKM Music). "This Critical Performance Edition is primarily based on the first print by the Russian publisher Jurgenson. In the Andante Funebre and Humoresque, the quartet and piano versions, respectively, were used for comparison. The composer accepted corrections by Leopold Auer and Vassily Bezekirsky, which are indicated in the violin part. The Meditation, Scherzo and Melodie (collectively named Souvenir d'un lieu cher) and Serenade Melancolique are dedicated to the famed Russian virtuoso and pedagogue Leopold Auer. The Valse Scherzo was dedicated to the budding virtuoso violinist Josif Kotek. The Andante Funebre is dedicated to the memory of Ferdinand Laub, perhaps Tchaikovsky's favorite violinist. The Humoresque is an irresistible piece for piano transcribed by the composer for violin and piano. No violinist, nor indeed any performer has been capable of doing justice to the enormous stylistic and emotional range of these works more than Jascha Heifetz. Mr. Heifetz's enormous repertory included the complete oeuvre of Tchaikovsky. Mr. Heifetz's bowing, fingerings and performance suggestions are an integral part of this edition."

Abstract: Mexico folk music was revived and transformed in the early 1900 by a nationalistic movement initiated by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. Ponce arrangement of Mexican folk music was transformed to assimilate to European classical music therefore transcending across to a larger audience. His well-known lied, Estrellita, has grown extremely popular that most audiences consider it a national folk song. Renowned violinist, Jascha Heifetz, arranged the song for violin and piano for a film in the United States. Heifetz transcription of Manuel Ponce Estrellita illustrates the nationalistic style of the composer while maintaining the idiomatic writing for violin and the essence of the original score for voice. Heifetz arrangement for violin maintains the aesthetic of Ponce's nationalistic style while maintaining the characteristics of the human voice. To achieve the imitation of the voice the performer has to have a warm vibrato, appropriate fingerings, and bowings that reflect good phrasing. These variables will determine how closely the violin can imitate the human voice, as this piece is originally a lied. The high register of the violin is used in distinctive occasions to express the agony of unrequited love. There are various exercises for vibrato and many options for shifts and bowings to better mimic the human voice and express the text of the lied. The execution of tone production and resonance requires various elements in the bow arm to work appropriately together. After addressing tone production, vibrato, phrasing/bowings, and shifts, the performer must deduce the appropriate interpretation that will capture the essence of the original arrangement for voice being "sung" on the violin. The many arrangements and interpretations of this piece will leave more room for the performer to achieve a unique interpretation. The interpretation itself will be subjective as only an audience can determine if the performer can execute and capture the essence of the original arrangement. A close study of the original lyrics compared to Heifetz arrangement will aid the performer. In addition, the historical study of Manuel Ponce and his revival of Mexican folk music will also help. The technique and musicality of the violinist must work together to achieve and capture Ponce early nationalistic style and mimic the human voice. Furthermore, a performance analysis of Jascha Heifetz, Joshua Bell, and Itzhak Perlman will result in a suggested performance guide with pedagogical recommendation.
