Beautifully detailed color photographs of ningyo drawn from private collections, many of which are published here for the first time, as well as images of related materials selected from celebrated museums and temple collections, such as folding screens, woodblock prints, sculpture, painting ceramics, and textiles, help place the dolls in context. A present-day mystery is tied to the Japanese American detention centers of WWII in this “wonderful” chapter of the Edgar Award-winning series (Lisa See). Mas Arai’s best friend Haruo is getting married, and the cranky detective and semi-retired gardener has grudgingly agreed to serve as best man. But when the ancient Japanese doll display that belongs to Haruo’s fiancée goes missing, the wedding is called off with fingers pointed at Haruo. To save his friend’s life, Mas must untangle a web of secrecy, heartbreaking memories, and murder stretching from the internment camps of the 1940s through the West Coast drug-running of the 1980s to today. In the fourth entry in her Edgar-winning mystery series, Naomi Hirahara once again delivers thrills alongside “a sensitive insider’s view of the Japanese-American subculture” (Publishers Weekly). “Mas Arai is a true original and one of my favorite characters in crime fiction. I love spending time in his world and I’m thrilled that he’s back—and at the top of his grumpy game.” —S.J. Rozan, Edgar-winning author of The Shanghai Moon

Identifying Japanese Dolls

Author : Lea Baten
ISBN : UOM:39015054438075
Genre : Art
File Size : 75.4 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 540
Read : 401

Lea Baten's unique and resourceful book assists in identifying the familiar and unfamiliar figurines known as ningyo, and explores the roots of the word itself: both meanings, "doll' and "human shape," are associated with play and ritual, life and death. These dolls are not necessarily just play-things with pretty faces, but range from mass-produced trivial toys to true art pieces and imposing ceremonial ornaments. Materials vary: they can be made from stone, clay, paper and wood; or brocade, ivory, pearl and lacquer. Many of the enormous variety of ningyo may be considered pieces of an unsolved puzzle that are in danger of disappearing without ever having been totally understood in the West. This book investigates the numerous meanings of the "human shape" in Japanese culture, from pre-history to the present, and explores the many, varied and subtle connotations ningyo have for the Japanese. This book not only identifies and describes ningyo, detailing their history and meaning, but also contains a comprehensive index and one of the most extensive bibliographies on the doll motif ever published in English. Scholarship, clear illustrations and a touch of humor guarantee a fresh and original approach to known and unknown ningyo.

In the early 1930s, Velvalee Dickinson moved to New York City where she opened her own exclusive doll shop. She built her reputation as an expert in rare, antique, and foreign dolls. She traveled extensively around the country lecturing and exhibiting her dolls while building a wealthy clientele. Due to her husband's poor health and her failing business, she accepted the role as a spy for the Imperial Japanese Government. By hiding coded messages in her correspondence about dolls, she was able to pass on to her Japanese contacts critical military information about the US warships. The FBI arrested her and charged her with espionage and violation of censorship laws. She became the first American woman to face the death penalty on charges of spying for a wartime enemy. Eventually the espionage charge was dropped, and she was sentenced to 10 years at Alderson Correctional Facility and a $10,000 fine. Four years into her stay at Alderson, Eunice Kennedy took a special interest in Velvalee and helped her find employment once she left Alderson. Later, Velvalee would become Eunice's private secretary. Velvalee Dickinson reached out to Eunice one last time when she was in her 70s, asking for her assistance in getting a job at the New York World's Fair. She eventually disappeared, having lived her life after prison in anonymity.
