Together for the first time—the acclaimed novel and novella that turned Knight into “a rising star in the paranormal pantheon” (Midwest Book Review)—plus two all-new stories set in an erotically charged world that “will set your blood on fire and have you begging for more.” (In the Library Reviews) In Jane’s Warlord reporter Jane Colby has made a startling discovery about a recent murder. The killer has struck before—hundreds of years in the past. Now he’s jumped through time to find his next victim…Jane. Her only hope lies with Baran Arvid—a genetically engineered warrior from hundreds of years in the future sent to capture the predatory time traveler—even if it means using Jane as bait. But can they survive the galaxies that come between them—and a madman bent on destroying them? In Warfem a strange destiny has reunited the seductive Warfem Alina, and Baird, the sexually dynamic Warlord who shared his lover’s young fantasies twenty years ago. But in this time apart, a dangerous new spark has been ignited between them. One that has held Alina captive in another’s plot of death and betrayal.

Warlord Survival

How do warlords survive and even thrive in contexts that are explicitly set up to undermine them? How do they rise after each fall? Warlord Survival answers these questions. Drawing on hundreds of in-depth interviews in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2018, with ministers, governors, a former vice-president, warlords and their entourages, opposition leaders, diplomats, NGO workers, and local journalists and researchers, Romain Malejacq provides a full investigation of how warlords adapt and explains why weak states like Afghanistan allow it to happen. Malejacq follows the careers of four warlords in Herat, Sheberghan, and Panjshir—Ismail Khan, Abdul Rashid Dostum, Ahmad Shah Massoud, and Mohammad Qasim Fahim). He shows how they have successfully negotiated complicated political environments to survive ever since the beginning of the Soviet-Afghan war. The picture he paints in Warlord Survival is one of astute political entrepreneurs with a proven ability to organize violence. Warlords exert authority through a process in which they combine, instrumentalize, and convert different forms of power to prevent the emergence of a strong, centralized state. But, as Malejacq shows, the personal relationships and networks fundamental to the authority of Ismail Khan, Dostum, Massoud, and Fahim are not necessarily contrary to bureaucratic state authority. In fact, these four warlords, and others like them, offer durable and flexible forms of power in unstable, violent countries.

It is aimed at those interested in the Clash, punk culture, and the intersections between pop music and politics, on both sides of the Atlantic. Contributors represent a wide range of disciplines and their work examines all phases of Strummer’s career, from his early days as “Woody” the busker to the whirlwind years as front man for the Clash, to the “wilderness years” and final days with the Mescaleros. Punk Rock Warlord offers an engaging survey of its subject, while at the same time challenging some of the historical narratives that have been constructed around Strummer the Punk Icon.
