Among the engineers fueling the rapid rise of the automotive industry at the dawn of the 20th century was James Allison, a fountain pen maker who joined with Carl G. Fisher in 1904 to found Prest-O-Lite, an early manufacturer of the power source for automotive headlights. This biography tracks Allison’s involvement in the Indianapolis 500, which he cofounded with Fisher and two others, as well as his machine shop’s construction of the Liberty engine, the first mass-produced aircraft engine, and also the V1710, the workhorse of World War II military aircraft. Through his unique ingenuity and perseverance, Allison created a legacy that still resonates today at the Indianapolis 500, Rolls-Royce, and Allison Transmission.

This engaging narrative by a former mayor offers a rare inside look at the workings of city government under the strong-mayor system . . . the politics and personalities that shaped the growth of her town in a crucial period of its history. This book tells how Tomilea Allison accidentally became mayor of a small university town in southern Indiana. Shown a draft of the book, a resident, already familiar with part of the history, said she could hardly wait to see the next chapter. How would it all turn out? A professor called it an invaluable source for students of public and environmental affairs. In 1963 Tomilea Allison, a native Californian, was newly arrived in Bloomington, Indiana, as a faculty wife (her husband, James, was a professor in Indiana University's department of psychology) with two young daughters. A few years later she found herself in charge of Senator Eugene McCarthy's Monroe County primary campaign for president of the United States. In 1977 she was asked to fill a vacancy on the city council. In 1983, after the sitting mayor was elected to Congress, she was chosen to take his place and served for thirteen years.

Lifeline is a story that needs to be told because it could happen to ANYONE. It continues the experiences of homelessness that the author began in his previous book Dark Waters. In 2009 the author bought three Composition notebooks and began documenting his experiences in verse. He wrote in his truck, at homeless shelters, and at the Public Library. This book tells his story in poetry and prose, giving the reader a bird's eye view of what he went through during his two year ordeal. Lifeline is not always an easy read, but it promises to keep the reader's attention and possibly prick an emotion or two. The journey began in April 2009 and continued until the December snows of 2010. This book describes the emotional roller-coaster the author was on during those two years and how he finally was rescued - as some would say - in the nick of time.

For some time immunotherapy has been heralded as a breakthrough approach for cancer treatment. Although the potential of this strategy remains solid, the approach needs considerable refinement. Whilst some programmes are looking to increase the understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the stimulation of antitumor immunity, others are trying to find the most appropriate clinical setting that will reveal the role of the immune system in combating cancer. Among the most important discoveries have been tumor-specific antigens. This thematic volume highlights some key issues and discusses where they may move forward. It has been put together by two leading cancer immunotherapists from two eminent institutions that focus on cancer research.
