How often have you seen a friend and been greeted with “How are you?” Almost always our automatic response is “Fine thank you” regardless of whether it’s true. We proclaim in church services that “God is good all the time . . . All the time God is good,” but there are often times when we feel that life is just unfair and ask God, “Why?” The uplifting songs and victorious testimonies of our church gatherings are frequently difficult to identify within the midst of the suffering and hardship of people’s daily lives, yet there is all too often no room for our “not-OK” experiences in our Christian communities. This is especially true for pastors and leaders who are required to always be strong and OK all the time. But the songs of lament in the Psalms paint a very different picture of understanding life and how human beings express themselves to God. Dr Rico Villanueva uses these Scriptures to teach us that in the presence of God, there is room to be “not-OK” and that our negative experiences don’t have to be ignored. This book challenges us to confront our struggles and questions instead of denying them. Most importantly, the author invites us to bring all of ourselves into the presence of God and the community of faith. For it is through our experiences and sharing them with God and his church that we grow in intimacy with God and our relationships with one another.

My name is Ivory Monique Sims, and I’m a single mother of a precious autistic kid! I had Dryston at the age of twenty-three and found out he had autism at his age of two! He is now five, and this adventure just keeps on giving me life! I’ve learned a lot about myself in this journey, and I still have a lot to learn and do! Nothing is impossible. I can do this, and like Ellen DeGeneres says, “Be kind to one another. That is the key!” This book is to give you insight. Put yourself in their shoes. For an autistic person, things can be difficult, so you have to show them in different ways to handle things and constantly give them reassurance that things will get better and nothing is impossible to accomplish. Crying at times may seem extreme when things don't happen as planned. Not being able to communicate your feelings can be stressful and we as parents must adjust. Routine is everything to an autistic child. As parents, you must be patient even when it feels like you're at your wits end. Simple tasks such as feeding themselves, potty training or tying their shoes may take more time and effort to learn but don't get discouraged because they can feel what you feel, believe it or not! I try as a parent to hide the negative feelings from him because I don’t want him to think that he isn’t enough, and if I can’t, I explain to him, “Mommy is just frustrated with herself for not figuring this out for you.” So in conclusion, autistic people are just like us. We have emotions and need love too, so spread the unconditional love, and we all will be okay. We both are growing together but in different ways! I’m an awesome mom, and I know it!

Feelings are sometimes hard to express, even more so for children. The children's picture book 'It's ok', highlights the constant change of emotions. It emphasises on the importance of expressing ones emotions rather than bottling them up under societies expectations of how one is meant to feel. These important values are conveyed through the journey of a young girl in the confusing world of emotions, not knowing how to deal with the constant change of emotions. Her ever-changing variety of emotions are supported by: colours, for example, on the page 'Sometimes I feel sad' is made up of dark colours and ragged sharp and unpredictable shapes that support the dark gloomy atmosphere. As the story develops, a young boy makes an appearance, acting as her inner voice and reassuring her that it is ok to feel and insisting that she does not suppress her emotions but rather to accept them and be herself. The story also makes use of symbolism for example when the girl comes to realise that 'it's ok to feel' her hair grows, symbolising a newfound strength that comes with accepting oneself for who one is. The story concludes by explaining that emotions are what make each individual unique.Feelings are sometimes hard to express, even more so for children. Hey Son It S Ok To Not Be Ok

Every man faces struggles, but few talk about it, especially with their sons. Afraid to appear weak or vulnerable, fathers tend to keep their fears and uncertainties bottled up inside while projecting an image of strength and resilience. Meanwhile, they secretly self-medicate in all sorts of ways- alcohol, food, affairs, and gambling-with many of them inadvertently blowing up their marriage, their family, and even their career in the process. At a certain point, every father who is living such a life needs to ask himself a key question: what sort of legacy is this emotionally stunted approach to life leaving for his son? If fathers don't teach their sons how to deal with their feelings, who will? And if fathers don't take the time required to find emotional healing and positive coping skills for themselves, how can they help their boys when trouble strikes? Jeff Johnson found himself in exactly this situation when he was in his early forties. The president of a thriving family-owned company, by all outward appearances, he was a success. But inside, he was dying due to issues with depression, anxiety and ruminating. Jeff found himself unable to express how he was feeling, choosing to self-medicate, be dishonest, shut down and being unavailable emotionally. Sensing things were reaching a breaking point, he finally found the courage to come clean about what was going on. The result was a watershed of healing, forgiveness, and hope as he worked through his depression and dealt with his grief over how his hidden emotional struggles impacted his relationships with his wife and children. This book is the result of Jeff's healing process. Though he doesn't claim to be an expert, he offers his story and what he's learned along the way to encourage and equip other fathers to deal with their emotional struggles in a positive way. Most importantly, he encourages fathers to share their story- their entire story, the good, the bad, and the ugly-with their sons to reassure them that it's okay to admit they're struggling. In fact, the worst thing they can do is try to hide it....

A cancer diagnosis is never welcome, but for Veronica Arnold it was a call to battle rather than a temptation to drown in despair. Her response was, “Bring it on!” She wanted to see what God would do to help her through this. It’s Okay to Be Me: A Journey to God’s Heart by Way of Cancer presents the very personal account of Veronica’s early years and the factors that contributed to her feelings of rejection. While not a victim of abusive, alcoholic, or drug-using parents—or even of abject poverty—indwelling sin twisted her experience, convincing her that she was terribly fl awed and unworthy. But God was at work in her life, calling out to her and holding her close even at her most rebellious times. It was when she was at her most vulnerable point, fearing a possible death sentence from cancer, that she finally got the message that she was infinitely valuable and eternally and unconditionally loved by the very Creator of the universe. Walk with her through the revelational process of finding her true worth. Discover the ways God prepared her for her most difficult journey and continually supported her through the stress of the challenging decisions, surgery, and recovery. It’s Okay to Be Me chronicles how she discovered, for the first time in sixty-five years, why it really was okay to be herself. “An amazing and inspirational life-changing account of a personal journey! ... Veronica has given a gift to others by sharing her story.” - Ashley Hood, medical/oncology social worker

The downpour of death and destruction flooding that life path of Black boys makes them prime candidates to be placed on the Endangered People's List. To be young, Black, a male, and muted, is a recipe for living with an emotional and potentially, a mental disorder. Black boys, too often, blinded by frustration, are angry, confused, and disconnected. Like pain, calling attention to illness in the body, A Marginalized Voice draws attention to the harmful practices, and social ills that systemically Many practitioners (parents, educators, program personnel, and health professionals) believe they are providing well-meaning solutions for those struggles faced by Black boys. More often than not, most fail to comprehensively understand the vicious cycle Black boys struggle to escape. A Marginalized Voice uncovers those deleterious practices authored by well-meaning supporters whose actions contribute to the pathology dependence that many Black boys find themselves locked in. The book illuminates the invisible chains of marginalization used to trap Black boys. Reginald Williams' use real-life chronicles to deliver the sobering truth about practices and principles paralyzing Black boys. The narrated stories represent the only empirical data needed to educate those who are miseducated. A Marginalized Voice challenges claimed leaders to step forward and educate themselves on the depth of the complex issues. It pushes leaders to be brazen enough to collaboratively forge forth to facilitate the change needed to impact the lives of Black boys. The abolitionist Frederick Douglass said: "It's easier to build strong children than repair broken men." A Marginalized Voice begins the process of building strong Black boys. It is the start of a conversation that will push for a movement so that the world will see and hear Black Boys Speak.

Parenting can be such an overwhelming job that it’s easy to lose track of where you stand on some of the more controversial subjects at the playground (What if my kid likes to rough house—isn’t this ok as long as no one gets hurt? And what if my kid just doesn’t feel like sharing?). In this inspiring and enlightening book, Heather Shumaker describes her quest to nail down “the rules” to raising smart, sensitive, and self-sufficient kids. Drawing on her own experiences as the mother of two small children, as well as on the work of child psychologists, pediatricians, educators and so on, in this book Shumaker gets to the heart of the matter on a host of important questions. Hint: many of the rules aren’t what you think they are! The “rules” in this book focus on the toddler and preschool years—an important time for laying the foundation for competent and compassionate older kids and then adults. Here are a few of the rules: • It’s OK if it’s not hurting people or property • Bombs, guns and bad guys allowed. • Boys can wear tutus. • Pictures don’t have to be pretty. • Paint off the paper! • Sex ed starts in preschool • Kids don’t have to say “Sorry.” • Love your kid’s lies. IT’S OK NOT TO SHARE is an essential resource for any parent hoping to avoid PLAYDATEGATE (i.e. your child’s behavior in a social interaction with another child clearly doesn’t meet with another parent’s approval)! From the Trade Paperback edition.
