Excerpt: ... In the following year, on the ground that some inhabitants of Campiglone had omitted to attend at Pinerola, for the purpose of the census, a further fine of 1000 ducatoons was levied upon the inhabitants of the valleys, who by these exactions were reduced to great distress. Of this distress, papism at once availed itself: agents of the catholic clergy went round to the poorest and most isolated of the suffering reformers, and promised not only to relieve them of their share of the fine, but to procure them an exemption from taxes, and present aid, if they would abandon protestantism; and many of these unhappy creatures, to save their families from starvation, yielded their souls to the tempter. Under Victor-Amadeus I. orders were repeatedly given to the authorities of Luzerna, Bubiana, Bricherasio, Campiglone, and Fenile, for the extirpation of the heretics; but they do not appear to have been acted upon. In many of these towns, indeed, the reformers had become more numerous than the catholics. CHAPTER XIII. REVIVAL OF THE CHITBCHES OF SALUZZO, AND THEIR FBESH VICISSITUDES. 1602--1616. The protestants in the province of Saluzzo were not limited to those of the churches we have enumerated; the fugitives from the large towns had retired to the remote villages in the valleys of the Stura, the Vrayta, and the Valgrano, and carried thither rays of the evangelical light, which spread and spread around the exiles, until, at length, these petty villages became new churches, enlarged, moreover, by many families who, having accepted, under compulsion, the external forms of catholicism, resumed their own faith when the storm had passed. But with the rising up of the faithful, arose also the persecutors; and the popish edict of February, 1602, prohibiting protestant worship...

Hans Breuer, Austria’s only wandering shepherd, is also a Yiddish folksinger. He walks the Alps, shepherd’s stick in hand, singing lullabies to his 625 sheep. Sometimes he even gives concerts in historically anti-Semitic towns, showing slides of the flock as he belts out Yiddish ditties. When New York-based writer Sam Apple hears about this one-of-a-kind eccentric, he flies overseas and signs on as a shepherd’s apprentice. For thoroughly urban, slightly neurotic Sam, stumbling along in borrowed boots and burdened with a lot more baggage than his backpack, the task is far from a walk in Central Park. Demonstrating no immediate natural talent for shepherding, he tries to earn the respect of Breuer’s sheep, while keeping a safe distance from the shepherd’s fierce herding dogs. As this strange and hilarious adventure unfolds, the unlikely duo of Sam and Hans meander through a paradise of woods and high meadows toward awkward encounters with Austrians of many stripes. Apple is determined to find out if there are really as many anti-Semites in Austria as he fears and to understand how Hans, who grew up fighting the lingering Nazism in Vienna, became a wandering shepherd. What Apple discovers turns out to be far more fascinating than he had imagined. With this odd and wonderful book, Sam Apple joins the august tradition of Tony Horwitz and Bill Bryson. Schlepping Through the Alps is as funny as it is moving. From the Hardcover edition.
