This stunning selection of color views, dating from the period 1953–1980, includes most of the vessels operated during this period by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and The Ramsey Steamship Company. Passenger boats and freighters are seen at ports on the island and on the mainland. There is comprehensive coverage of the Peel, Ramsey and Port Erin lines operated by the Isle of Man Railway with some outstanding views taken during the 1950s, together with excellent portraits of most of the locomotives, as well carriages, vans, wagons, lorries, stations, staff and signal boxes. Also covered are Douglas Station and its environs, St John's junction and the Sunday 'specials' to Braddan. Many of the rich mix of bus types operated by the railway subsidiary, Isle of Man Road Services, are seen in a variety of locations. Included are some of the vehicles delivered just before and shortly after the Second World War. There are good views of the fascinating Ramsey Pier Tramway and its unusual rolling stock, as well as rare scenes taken as early as 1953 on the Groudle Glen Railway. For anyone who loves the Isle of Man and its wealth of vintage transport, this book provides a remarkable trip down memory lane and a colorful reminder of some of its lost glories. The book is dedicated to the memory of John McCann who took brilliant color views on the island starting in 1953.

Raad ny Foillan (The Way of the Gull) is a 98 mile footpath around the Isle of Man. The route description is set out as a circuit and split into stages, with the longest walk being 15.5 miles and the shortest being 7 miles. Any fast walkers may wish to complete two stages per day, while those progressing at a more leisurely pace may decide to amble along and take in the splendid attractions along the way. There are two other walks described in this guidebook. The 23 mile Millennium Way, which follows the ancient route of the kings, from Ramsey to Castletown, and the 14 mile Herring Way, which takes a more traditional route from Peel to Castletown. Both these routes cross the hills of the island's interior and can be combined to make an interesting longer walk.

History is everywhere, and is never as complete as when it can be accessed on a part of history itself. The locomotive is one of the great steps in progress of civilisation that undoubtably connects us to land and history that was shaped by the machine itself. Although a basic form of railway, or rutway, did exist in Ancient Greek and Roman times - notably the ship trackway between Diolkos and the Isthmus of Corinth around 600 BC - it would take several thousand years before the first fare-paying passenger service was launched in the early nineteenth century. Some two hundred years on, it is possible to travel by train to some of the world's most remote and remarkable destinations, and track the many wonderful legacies of the Earth's extensive history - man-made and otherwise. From prehistoric rock formations to skyscraper cities, slow steam engines to high-speed bullet trains, let A History of the World in 500 Railway Journeys be your guide. Through its beautifully illustrated pages, and 500 awe-inspiring railway journeys, you can chart your own transcontinental itinerary through time. Chug through canyons, steam past ancient monuments, speed through cities, luxuriate in the railcars of presidents and queens, or make express connections between key historical moments or epic eras, A History of the World in 500 Railway Journeys has it all. A must-read for travellers, railfans and history buffs alike, offering inspiration and information in equal measure.

Train travel always leads to great adventures;the countryside, like a moving picture show, unrolls itself before one's eyes. One is transported to the wild places of earth – forest, mountain, desert;and always there is the counterpoint between life within the train and life without. Train travel, being both constrictred in time and space, magnifies character, intensifies relationships, unites the disparate. Ordinary people become extra-ordinary, larger then life;and in the knowledge that they will not meet again, expansive, confiding, intimate. A BOOK OF RAILWAY JOURNEYS is a collection of Ludovic Kennedy's favourite train-journey literature. The anthology takes us on a round-the-world tour, through 155 years of train travel. It conjures up grand old trains and historic journeys;recalls horrific wartime adventures and spectacular crashes;and dwells on the romance of rail travel – its most unlikely encounters and unexpected events.

The Isle of Man has a rich transport heritage and once boasted the largest narrow gauge network in Britain with eight railways and tramways. Founded in 1870 and opened in 1874, the Isle of Man Railway still connects Douglas with the ancient capital of Castletown and Port Erin. This part of the line continues in operation using several of the original steam locomotives and carriages, and Gordon Edgar's collection of historic black-and-white archive images from the 1950s and 1960s captures this microcosm of former times, with the trains set amid the beautiful Manx countryside. The Isle of Man railways are hugely popular as a tourist attraction. There is a railway museum beside the station at Port Erin.
